I would like to announce an app I’m working on. It’s called “Number Tango” (or maybe you could write it 番号単語) and it’s for practicing Japanese numbers. The focus is on recognizing spoken numbers, so basically you listen to recordings of numbers and type them in as numerals.

It’s meant as a supplement for an elementary language course or self study, but I hope it will also be useful for practicing numbers used in daily situations like shopping, listening to announcements, or waiting to be seated at a restaurant.

While number vocabulary is covered by other resources, I found that none of them worked quite the way I want, so I decided to create my own. Some Number Tango features:

  • All of the audio is recordings of a real native speaker
  • Vocabulary includes basics like numerals and counters, but also coverage of higher numbers (tens, hundreds, thousands)
  • Simple SRS that suggests reviewing at increasing intervals if you’re answering accurately (but you can practice any time you like)

Maybe you can include some 万 and 億 numbers too, at least for 円 amounts and population numbers. With 万 and above, things get really tricky because of the 10^4 system.

Yes, that would be very useful to practice. I want to add more content to the app over time, and larger numbers are next on the list.

Will it include counters beyond 人 too?
But do 万 and 億 level first. That’s just numbers and doesn’t require weird definitions. (Why the heck are rabbits counted like birds?)

Number Tango 1.1 is now available. This version adds a “Ten Thousands” deck for practicing numbers with the unit 万.

I just released version 1.3 of Number Tango. What’s new:

Decks have a new design. It’s easier to see your review progress, and you can see a list of all the vocabulary in each deck, along with the audio and transcriptions.

Transcriptions are now formatted to include spaces after the unit to make them easier to read. For example, ひゃくにじゅうさん is formatted as ひゃく にじゅう さん.

Unlocking all decks is now a one-time purchase and the subscription option has been removed. If you previously purchased a subscription, it will be honored as a purchase as long as the app is available, and you will not be charged again.
