NANA―ナナ― 👩‍🎤 Volume 1

Wow, that’s a pretty wild history.

I’m in the middle of my first watch of the anime! Glad to see a book club for this manga since it is already in my wishlist, but I’ll be starting later when my reading skills catch up. Bookmarking for now

I am IN!!!

It’s honestly hard to put into words how much Nana means to me. I first discovered it as a teenager by reading scanlations while it was still being published, and since then I’ve watched the anime and re-read the manga countless times. I own all the volumes in Japanese (thank you, eBay) and even have a strawberry glasses tattoo…So you could say I’m ahem a bit of a fan.

So excited to read and experience with everyone! :strawberry:

So cool! Welcome everyone! (Even if it’s in the future)
Very moved and excited to see so many and so many stories

One week until NANA starts :man_dancing:
So there’s still time to share what’s your story with NANA if you so wish.
@Belerith I actually just spotted on Natively that you were reading volume 11 now, curious if it’s a re-read or a first read? And curious to know what do you think so far? (in spoiler tags maybe)

I was in a Japanese bookstore in Paris and I saw the cover and thought “hey I remember this being nominated in the IMC. It looks cool.” and the rest is history.

It’s my first time reading it! Its really good, no wonder it’s such a staple. It’s really a shame it’s not finished…

So far it’s been a solidly good experience. The characters are so flawed and I love them all. especial the two Nanas - their relationship is depicted really nicely, even or especially when they don’t even see each other. All the other characters are also fleshed out though. Everyone makes sense and feels like their own person. All in all it’s really well written. The art is also consistently nice. It really grew on me.

All the drama though~~ :sob: Breaking my heart between every chapter.

Ooh I’m so happy to hear that! Even more excited now! Thanks for the reply :star_struck:
Yeah the no-real-ending is a bummer but hey, better than having an ending we don’t like, maybe (trying hard to convince myself there)

Oh, first I’m hearing about this, sounds like it wasn’t able to be completed for some reason? I’m sure I could find this info myself but probably better I don’t do too much internet searching about the series if I might be reading it soon, easy to bump into spoilers.

Unfortunately the author, Ai Yazawa became ill in 2009 and the manga went on hiatus at that time. The details of her illness have never been fully clear, nor has there ever been any indication that Nana will resume publishing, besides occasional messages from Yazawa saying she hopes to resume publishing someday.

As much as I would someday love to read a new chapter of Nana, I will support the creator no matter what :yellow_heart: There is also something beautiful and poetic about such a brilliant and tragic story remaining inconclusive. I think it just speaks to how powerful and unique this story is that, despite it not having any new chapters for 15 years, it still touches so many people and remains popular.

I watched the NANA anime a about 15 years ago (oof). I think I had finished Honey and Clover and was looking for something with adults and I’m a sucker for friendships so it was a no brainer. I would watch it on break at work (repetition of poor judgement haha). I don’t remember a lot about it so I’ve been wanting to rewatch it for a while now. Saw the book club was starting up and figured it’d be a perfect time to revisit the story! (Will be revisiting some scenes in the anime as we read them since the music and atmosphere is just too good). It will be the 2nd manga I’m reading in Japanese (currently almost caught up with ひらやすみ) and my first book club. I’m pretty excited!

I read it so long ago that chapters were still coming out back then. I also watched the anime! I can’t remember much (I vaguely remember being angry at one of the male characters for some romance related things? lol), but I looooooved the music from Olivia Lufkin! I even got her mini Nana Trapnest album as a cd. Pretty sure it was one of the first cds I bought myself.

that was my favorite song and I made amvs with it lol

Another NANA story: when I made this account on the forum, I wanted a profile pic from something in Japanese that I had a strong connection with. So I immediately thought about Nana. Tried a profile pic with 小松菜々 but didn’t find one that I liked the colour or the size as they end up being quite small. So I ended up choosing Yuna from FFX instead, a bit more colourful.

My daughter always identified with 小松菜々!

Just want to say that our first reading section is covered (mostly) by Episode 2 of the anime, opening with those great lines:

あたしの生まれ故郷は

山に囲まれた
広くも狭くもない町で

ど田舎ではないけど都会でもない
観光に来られてもウリがない

あたしは3人兄弟の真ん中で

金持ちでも貧乏でもない親に
ほったらかされてスクスクと育ち

県内普通レベルの女子校を

もうすぐ卒業する
