Discussion Guidelines

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Smooth read, no real stumbles apart from deciphering the handwritten 「不毛の恋だぞ、それは」 on page 69.

Spoilers

奈々 just throwing that 大好き like nothing out there. Hasn’t she heard that that’s not what you do in Japanese? :joy:

章司 being like 「襲うぞ!」 – the beds are completely separate, you don’t have to be a rapist!? I was about to write that I didn’t get what’s the big deal with sharing a room but yeah, when the 雄 in the room is worried about not being able to contain himself, might be better to figure something out…

奈々 is still quite childish. Just yelling 「イヤッ」 isn’t quite enough in the face of 大魔王 – had a good laugh when one of the others pondered whether the curse is of the virulent kind. You need to dig deeper and not just cling to 淳ちゃん.

I appreciate 章司 trying to talk some sense to 奈々, but what a dick move storming off, no matter how upset he was. Back before we had GPS constantly at our fingertips you actually could get lost in a city. I loved that feeling, but it’s not great late at night…

Yikes what a place to finish. :fearful: Of all the people, it had to be that festering (化膿性かのうせい we learned in last chapter) wound. ヤバッ! Really hope she just fucking slaps him in the face and leaves right away… but I get the feeling that’s not going to happen.

I’ll keep this fun and not read ahead at all.

I thought that too and that makes it all the more creepy that a grown man was dating her. I guess he was just prying on her naivety.

Yeah, I lost a lot of sympathy for him there. :frowning: But I am sure he will regret that deeply

I’m with you on that one :sob:

I kept thinking that Nana was really immature, then I chuckled at TOKYO F ART COLLEGE

Being optimistic about it, it may be the opportunity for a breakthrough and finally finding some closure. Given how immature she still seems to be however, I’m not massively optimistic.

章ちゃん’s brutal reaction is very mean but frankly understandable. Judging by what we see, Nana always uses him for support but rarely gives back. It can’t be very fulfilling for him to play the babysitter for an immature woman all the time.

When it comes to immature humor, 428 has this gang called KOK for some inane reason (every letter was like a whole abbreviated statement) and I honestly can’t help myself when they give me a line like this

I liked this chapter a good bit, interesting to see some of this coming to a head.

奈々 is so self-centered; obviously her friends mean a ton to her but she can’t ever get her attention onto anything but what something means for her. There was some それより in the middle of 淳ちゃん talking about herself where I was like “damn let something be not about you once.”

And it’s obvious all this desperate clinging to them isn’t really for the good of how things are going to turn out for her, but I have to feel a lot of sympathy. You hit these points in life where people drift apart really hard and maybe you can manage to stick together sometimes but often it does fade out, everything is temporary, kinda sucks eh.

The step of maturity is kinda, burdening them with her feelings in the way of acting like she literally can’t handle them being gone is a heavy thing to put on them. They can’t not go and you kinda just have to deal with it, but I get it. And her whole romantic life has been people either not returning any affection or temporarily using her and then going away; people leaving is a pattern she must be used to and at this stage I don’t think we really know if she has anyone after this group goes.

Yay :flexed_biceps: me too I think. I’m going to miss Nana until next weekend but enjoying reading everyone’s impression when they are fresh and the pace of the club, feels like I’ve been with the character longer when the reading is spanned on several weeks.

Had a good laugh at that one when it appeared in the manga. And then now when reading your comment, official nickname found :joy:

Oh! I totally forgot to say but thank you so much for the pictures! They were very helpful at points where it got annoying to strain my eyes for.

By the way I forgot to ask:

p.68

What does もう一件 mean here precisely? Is 件 just used as a counter here? But for what? Just “hang out” without any specifics?

P.68

Not sure either. Something like “since we came all the way to Tokyo let’s see more of the city”, but not sure how 件 specifically means that

I think it’s literally a typo. You had me thinking I had misread it but no, my version has a different kanji.

Oh wow. Seems we have come full circle, people with the digital edition can help with the typos

Aaah, so he’s basically asking to walk one more block before returning to the hotel? That does make more sense. I thought it was some kind of idiom I couldn’t find anywhere.

Actually I think it might be more specifically “Let’s go to one more place”, as a villa house is 一軒家 and Jisho has 一軒 to mean one house

More questions

p.51

I don’t understand いー気になってそーだし?

What about そのつっこみ具合い?

And 京助とラブラブですっかり丸くなっちゃったってゆーか骨抜き?
I think I get the gist of it, that 章ちゃん has to be talking to 菜々 in the way that Junko was, since now she’s busy being all ラブラブ with 京助, but not sure what they are exactly saying

p.64

あんたの人生がどーなろーと知ったこっちゃないよ
The beginning is probably
あなたの人生がどうなろと知った but こっちゃないよ? こっちはないよ?
Something like “what ever your life becomes, is it not my problem?”

p.68

しかし東京ってとこはあれだね

Not sure about this sentence?

Attempts at answers

So this manga does a lot of elongating vocals with ー even in ひらがな writing. It’s actually just…

いい気になる [いいきになる]
(exp,v5r) to be self-complacent; to be conceited; to flatter oneself; to be full of oneself

  • て-form + そう + だ + し

突っ込み, 突っこみ, 突込み [つっこみ, ツッコミ]
(2) (n) digging into (a matter); depth
(4) (n) quip; gibe; jab; dig; retort; riposte; comeback

She’s just saying that the {reply, retort, comeback} was really good.

After falling so head over heels for 京助, 淳ちゃん mellowed out, or better, {watered down / diluted}.

The follow-up 張り合い is defined in 明鏡 as 「充足した反応があること」. That’s negated here, so her replies were not “sufficient” to 奈々 anymore.

知ったこっちゃない is a phrase: “I don’t give a damn; I wouldn’t know; that’s got nothing to do with me”.

This is pretty harsh on 淳ちゃん’s part.

“So, the place called Tokyo is this around us, right? (looking around キョロキョロ)” or something to that tune.

This is 清々. “I would be even relieved!”

It does indeed :open_mouth: thanks a lot for the answers!

Everybody is being so harsh with Nana this week :crying_cat:

Yeah I think it makes things more casual and slang-y. “Behind the supermarket smoking with you” does that a lot too (and I saw it a bunch with very rough/foul mouthed/bratty characters in videogames as well).

True, but I’d argue that she’s also in desperate need of a wake up call…

Although it is sad that her work didn’t pay off for the school exams. She did seem to actually seriously try and it was all for naught.
