Discussion Guidelines

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Haha this section had a lot of funny faces too

p.27

The katakana next to the small thing falling from Nana’s eye says メカラウロコ
That’s a joke illustrating the saying 目から鱗が落ちる (めからうろこがおちる) ‘the [fish] scales fall from my eyes’, it describes a revelation – an epiphany – a laser beam moment where the truth of things is suddenly made clear.

p.29

Notice the conversation between Junko and Kyousuke in katakana, it goes like this (couldn’t make out two of the kanji):
高倉くんは家どこ?
ここの近所
へーー近所ってどのへん?
コンビニのXXのへん
へーーマジで近いねーー徒歩く5分位?

I appreciate that so far the characters have somewhat regular name readings.

It’s a single kanji, 裏 (I think, it does look a little weird but it makes sense in context).

Ah yes that makes sense!

That’s pretty helpful – I’ve been suffering through an anki name deck recently to get better at those and it’s a struggle. It doesn’t help that I have so much time spent playing videogames where people have made up katakana names and stuff.

This week

I like how Nana has gone from starting this week’s reading deciding she needs to just become friends with guys, to ending on needing another boyfriend. And of course being completely oblivious when someone actually wants to date her and she isn’t, like, ordering pizza to see a guy haha.

She’s an amusing character but the art style is definitely carrying it for me so far; I quite enjoy how they’re drawn.

Yeah this is hilarious, finally a nice guy, AND he even likes her → instantly friendzones him :joy:

I’m realizing that I don’t really remember a lot of the beginning of the story, so it’s been nice to revisit it. Nana is so cute and over the top all the time and just so endearing.

on the topic of misremembering things

I do remember Nana walking in on them, but I don’t think it was until this read through that I realized his other hand was up her skirt :joy: That’s way less tame that I remember it being and makes Nana’s reaction a lot more understandable

Oh, the way that’s drawn I apparently wasn’t paying close enough attention to notice so thanks for pointing that out.

It took me a while to understand what was going on in that picture, at first I thought the skirt was just cut like that, but just after you can see that it’s just a symmetrical long dress.

This week felt so much easier than last week.

Thoughts

I appreciate how what happened with the last guy is being handled. The way the first segment went felt almost flippant so I’m glad it’s actually a serious thing being taken seriously.

I like the new guys. Wasn’t sure on 章司 at first, but since 奈々 has accidentally turned him down I think he’s more trustworthy than if she had started dating him immediately.

Was not expecting to walk in on 淳ちゃん and 京助… But it was just his hand? I had assumed it was another body part, but tbf I didn’t look closely enough to check :flushed:

I like 奈々. I wish her well in her pursuits. Though honestly would prefer to see that platonic friendship plan work out.

anatomical spoilery thoughts

It’s hard to tell if he has his pants still on, but I figured with both of her feet on the floor it was a hand and not … other bits…

seggs

The weird thing for me is the timing: it’s supposed to be the next morning, right? So why are they fully clothed, standing up and groping each other in the middle of the living room?

nomikai and (s)eggs?

I kinda assumed that they had talked all night (he was asleep at some point, so I guess not all night), but they were up talking and one thing led to another and here we are.

The standing part is weird, no matter what though… maybe they were making breakfast?

I finished this section! I added a few words to the spreadsheet, but I feel like I don’t have any substantive questions or much to add to the discussion. Just happy to be here! I just love all of these characters so much. Nana is absolutely hilarious and such a well-written hopeless romantic. She actually reminds me of a slightly more grown-up Usagi from Sailor Moon (another personal all-time favorite).

I will say if you are scandalized by the sexy scene in this section…buckle up for the rest of this series

Wow everyone’s so fast! I finally finished week 1 and in the middle of week 2 now. I remember all these scenes from the few episodes I watched a couple of years back - it feels so different reading them now. Makes me feel more connected to the characters.

I’m only on page 29 and I can already see two ships forming hahah - but well, I did read all the spoilers though so it’s more obvious

everyday I’m learning something new :+1:

In this case I think it’s just slang for 友達.

yeah, I figured that - it’s just funny to see that the suffix definition is 5th or 6th in the list (maybe it’s on me to change the order of dictionaries lol)

I think I’m wrong actually because I can’t find タチ as slang for ともだち anywhere (I was sure that it was a thing?) but it’s this instead:

EDIT: ah, ダチ is friend, keeping the rendaku. That’s what confused me.

ahhh wow okay I didn’t know that either. Thanks for sharing!
