Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.

Pretty dense in text this week! So this is only the first batch of questions, I will probably have more

For anyone who’s interested, this week’s reading is covered by Episode 4 of the anime (from 8:23). The anime follows the written text pretty closely here.
Ahhh yay finally in the Nana O. sections! (I love Nana K of course, but this section in particular is so nostalgic for me). Every single character in Blast is so wonderful. I feel like it’s actually hinted at a lot more from the jump how alike Nobu and Nana K are?? The scene with Nana’s fangirls is so adorable. I definitely would have been one…
One thing I’ve been thinking about as I’ve revisited this story is that I have never fully grasped Ren’s personality. I don’t know what words I would use to even describe him. Stoic? Reserved? Determined? Maybe. I am somewhat forgetting how his character develops further (besides the obvious end of the story) so every time he’s in a panel, I am like “what’s your deal??”
This section did suddenly feel so much more dialogue and slang-heavy than the Nana K sections, and was definitely challenging. I still have a few pages left, so I’ll check back in with my questions when I finish!
Yeah this section is tough! Basically like a first chapter of a book again, introducing the setting again, the characters, the backstories, a lot of things! Not too surprised that the thread has been a bit quiet
This manga is starting to make me feel like “going to Tokyo” is some major threat to look out for when you’re living in Japan. One day you’re surrounded by friends and family, the next, everyone went to Tokyo. Maybe that can be the euphemism parents tell their kids when animals die, rather than a farm or something, they’ve just gone to Tokyo.
I guess we know the Nanas are going to go there because I think them meeting up is the whole premise here, and its call comes for all of us. I wonder if this Nana is going to find a new band, given that music is what she wanted to do and that’s sure getting interrupted.
I don’t feel like I have enough of an impression of the other two, but new Nana and Ren are cool enough as characters. I probably get on with this group’s vibe a little more in general than the other one, but we’ll see how things progress.
I don’t know, I grew up in a provincial city in France, around 100.000 inhabitants, and I think there was a similar aura around “going to Paris”. Also like in Japanese we don’t even say “going to Paris / Tokyo” but “climbing to Paris / Tokyo”. People going there will have this new exciting life and will forget you forever.
I ended up moving to the suburbs of Paris with my family when I was a teenager, and when I was telling people where I was coming from they would ask things like “oh, were you going to school with a tractor? did you have Internet over there?”.
Yeah no it’s far more opportunity, depending on where you came from; I don’t think it’s particularly unreasonable and especially given the manga is centered around people at this stage of their life. I’m mostly being tongue in cheek haha, it’s just a little amusing to me that both of our plots are totally being moved by people (and others than the two at the center of the story) going there. And given what point we’re at so early we kind of just have what history it could fit in about people, and moving is kinda the one big thing they do / are doing in the present tense. Of course, two Nanas mirroring each other but also quite differently could very much be the point! I’m just being silly; it’s not a criticism or anything
It’s funny given the numbers you’re working with cause I am originally from a town of like 4000 people lol, America is full of those. But there were occasions of people literally going to school on tractors a couple times and until I moved… most of the surrounding area had proper internet but the road I lived on wasn’t wired for it so I was stuck in dial-up until a little before 2010 so I mean, it was kinda actually that in my case. And I mean I honestly have next to nothing good to say about it, getting out is pretty much entirely positive.
Wait so this isn’t a flash forward and there are two Nana but also in the band there’s another character (woman/twink, can never tell the difference in mangas) that looks a lot like the first Nana but it’s not her either?
I’m too tired, I’ll have to revisit tomorrow, I feel like I’m reading Chinese.
Yep, it’s not a flash forward, it’s a completely different character, 小松奈々doesn’t appear at all in this section. Not sure who you mean looks a lot like her, maybe 美里?
I see. Well I haven’t had it for NANA because I already know the story but I know how it feels with new manga and new settings, it’s very confusing and hard to tell people apart (it happened to me recently with Bocchi).
Hopefully a re-read when you’re not too tired can help! And if anything feels unclear ask away, I’ll be happy to try and help I have re-read this section myself and caught a few things on the second time around that I hadn’t understood on the first read (like on p.113, when Yasu tells Ren that’s he’s going to tell Nobu about “the thing”, so that it would be good if it was Ren who told Nana)
