Welcome to Week 8 of Mother 2 Club

:house: Home Thread | :video_game: Game Club

Sometimes you need to go backward to go forward. Let’s backtrack a little this week!

This week’s going to be a bit lighter, so if you have extra time left over, feel free to battle enemies if you feel your levels have been a bit low, or in case you don’t have much cash on hand (although you’re probably the richest kid in the world by now).

Week 8 Jun 19th
Last Week Week 7
Start Point Go underground in the desert
End Point Find your sanctuary under the :cloud_with_rain:
Next Week Week 9
A guide to this week (spoilers) 🐒 🐒

Last week ended with a teleporting monkey, an undelivered strawberry tofu machine, and a maid for the richest man in town who wants that machine. (Apparently, strawberry tofu was a thing in Mother 1. For those who’ve played Earthbound, you may remember this as the…trout yogurt dispenser.)

If you want to have an easier time of it this week, stop by the department store and buy a hamburger or two (if you don’t already have one on hand).

The monkey that ended off last week called for your presence in the underground cave in the desert, so hop on the bus and head west.

When you’re dropped off at the drug store, now’s a good time to ensure you have the Octopus Eraser on hand, offload any items you don’t need, and buy an えんそくランチ and スキップサンド. It doesn’t hurt to call in for a pizza while you’re at it.

The caves are a simple maze of monkeys. Check the map at the bottom of the post if you want to know which monkey wants what item, and which presents have which items. (Good luck with the egg; it’s optional.)

Your time in the cave is finished when you have the tofu machine in hand.

Back outside, you’ll find the teleport monkey again. Speak to him to learn how to teleport, but it’s not a big deal if you miss out. (But if you do speak with him, you can hop over to Winters real quick to buy a stronger bat and frying pan at the store.)

Return to Fourside and find the maid near the department store and the モノトリー building. After handing over the tofu machine, head into the モノトリー building. If you tried the second elevator before and couldn’t get very far, you’ll find it different this time. Take the second elevator, and prepare for a fight.

Finish things in the building, then take a trip to Threed and find the Sky Walker where Jeff landed(?) it a while back. This is your ride to Winters. (If you spoke to the teleport monkey, you can teleport right to Winters, but enemies will be overpowered, and you’ll need the Sky Walker to advance next week.)

Once in Winters, speak with Jeff’s father, then head to the cave with the shining spot you saw when playing as Jeff before. Now that you have Ness with you, you can take on the boss and reach another sanctuary.

Finish up the week by returning to the Andonuts lab to call Dad and save your progress.

If you Teleport to Winters, you can visit the shop:

For the cave, you only need to bring a Skip Sandwich and a Picnic Lunch from the outside. You can buy both at the drug store in the Desert! Everything else can be found within the cave! There are two pizzas, one locked behind the other, so if you don’t do that right you’ll have to order one.

Be sure to bring lots of inventory space!

That’s the one thing I never have!

Inventory management in this game has been a consistent pain because there’s just so much stuff I want to keep around on the off-chance I need it at some point (and one of the few times I did send something into storage I got screwed over for it)

Yeah, inventory is probably my only gripe in this game. I can’t think of anything after this section that is a pain point though.

Yeah, inventory management is a bit of a drag. This game loves to have a ton of items to add flavor – inefficient things, mostly for fun effects, even things that are totally useless. While I’m more of a limited inventory defender where it makes for interesting decisions, it just doesn’t really here. Keep your equipment, give Jeff a few attack items, and everything else is juggling for space for key items while consumables are fine but mostly luxuries. It’d benefit from way more space or at least separate types of inventory where key items sit on their own or something (though as we see this week, the line can be blurry sometimes still between consumable and key item).

This week

Yesss it’s Paula again! I missed her. Monkey cave is a cute little pace breaker, cheated with the map for that final delivery but I managed to get the egg there quickly enough so I think I explored the whole cave. The way teleport requires a run up with enough clearance is so silly and unnecessary; it’s the exact kind of thing I enjoy this game for.

The little robot the band has to save you from is so funny looking; it’s delightful.

I’m also increasingly settling into that feeling Earthbound gives me that makes me really love it. It’s the combination of everything we’ve gone through. The game is essentially a long series of cute and strange little vignettes which are pleasant and amusing on their own, but the further I get the more it’s, like, we’ve really been on this giant adventure through a ton of places that also feels like a weird fever dream as it builds. For how much I loved it this is my first time replaying it after one playthrough years ago and I think I kind of like it that way because I kind of don’t want to learn and remember every inch of it too well, Earthbound in my head is hazy and I really like it that way. Because of how weird the transitions are and how events don’t really logically connect it’s very hard to remember what came before and after what and how we really got where we are. If you let your mind wander the game is a little… hypnotic, I guess is a word for it.

Funny enough, with the return to Threed, then to Winters I was feeling like the world seems pretty small, actually. (But that changes next week.)

I like the way it jumbles up the progression a little bit and keeps this feeling more like a real world you’re moving around through than a series of one time stops on a conveyor belt, you know? I do get what you mean about it too though.

There was a point where it said all the locations and when they put it like that, I appreciated how they don’t always throw you to the next one immediately. When I was in the desert I thought the enemies were far behind and there wouldn’t be much point to fighting them, but their levelling felt appropriate since its a party of 2 now

For so many games I like to wait forever before replaying them, if I replay them too early I’ll remember too much and get bored, so I feel like I might as well wait so I can get an experience similar to my first one

Week 8

Started off by visiting the monkey cave. Was scared it was going to be a slog like some of the other caves, especially because we were missing a party member, but all of the combat in there was super easy. Most of the enemies were running away so I barely had to do any combat too. Was a fun little dungeon with having to find the right item and take it to the right monkey. I managed to get the egg across the dungeon to the one who wanted it first try. Also at the end you get to learn the power of teleportation! It’s a fun power, but needs a big runway. Feels like maybe a Back to the Future reference (it brought to mind the DeLorean accelerating to 88mph)? I had a little bit of trouble getting back from ウィンターズ because of that, but at least it’s cheap (2PP)

Then I did the モノトリー building, which wasn’t too bad but スネス got homesick just as I got a few rooms into the top floor so I had to go back down to phone mum. The boss fight at the end went alright. And surprise トンズラブラザーズ appearance! Then seeing ポーキー fly off in the helicopter was fun

After that it was back to スリーク in order to get the スカイウォーカー and fight the sanctuary guardian in the cave to the north of stonehenge. Fairly easy boss, especially now that I had ポーラ back with me
