🍔 Mother 2 / Earthbound (Game Club) - Week 6

Welcome to Week 6 of Mother 2 Club

:house: Home Thread | :video_game: Game Club

I had a computer issue this week and wasn’t certain I’d be able to get this thread together in time. If it looks a bit rushed, that’s why!

I wasn’t sure where I should stop this week, but between the new town (many people to talk to) and the underground mine is both difficult and mazelike, I didn’t want to extend the content too much.

Week 5 June 5th
Last Week Week 5
Start Point Leave Threek Due East
End Point Give the Theater Manager a Diamond
Next Week Week 7
A simple guide to this week (spoilers) 🌵 🚗 🕳️ 🎤

The next destination lies east. With the ghosts gone, hop on the bus (or walk, if you’d like) and pass through the eastern tunnel.

You’ll take a detour through the desert. There are various things to do here (check the linked guides to find them all), but at the very least, talk to the hungry miner. Give the miner some food.

Continue to traverse the desert on the other side, then continue through another tunnel to reach Fourside. A new town means a new populace to converse with.

Take some time to explore, including visiting the theater and speaking to the manager there.

Return to the miner, and you should have access to an underground cave. (I don’t know if this is immediately available; if not, then sleep in the cabin beside the miner. Or if you are just not giving him food, rest for the night to continue.)

Head into the mine where you’ll encounter five mini-bosses. Judging by the path you’re most likely to take, you’ll probably encounter the third-strongest one first. (Let me know if I’m wrong.) But any order is fine, so take them out one by one.

After clearing the mine of its rodent problem, return to Fourside and back to the theater. Have another chat with the manager, then catch a show.

The department store should be open by now, but let’s save that for next week.

Mine Map

Here is a suggested route through the mines:

(Sorry for it being slim; I ran out of time!)

I’m still finishing up this week’s content, but just wanted to point out it’s possible to watch the concert as soon as you get to Fourside before going back to do the dungeon, so that might need to be reworded – for now I’d just recommend if you’re playing this week, check the guide to make sure you’ve done the intended stuff.

Done!

I should have known it was watchable early. Kind of hard to mention the endpoint otherwise without a minor spoiler, but that’s what [spoiler] is for.

Don’t worry I was eager this week and repurposed some of my findings into hints! They can be whenever but I’d recommend complementing them after checking out Fourside to your heart’s content

General hints/observations

First things first, the most underrated reminder, you can change the text box color at the main menu at any time for a change of pace, I like all the colors, I started with mint but I’m rocking banana now

A party of 3 with plenty of space is all well and good, but I had some stuff I wanted to sell and the department store was closed, so maybe show Escargo Express your business because it’s cool they have your back, they’re like librarians

There’s some mad dough in the desert, specifically 1000 dollars and it’s near the highway, near a place you can test your luck!

I had some あおのり and it automatically paired with a burger I found in the desert (I’m not sure how long it’s been sitting out there) I forgot it was auto, maybe keep that in mind if you want to be like a condiment master or something

In the dungeon you can find something that goes ちゅう and maybe it can help you out

Remember Jeff does machines, don’t forget to shuffle broken parts over to him!

PSI moves are starting to add up, remember you can review them as they come along at any time on the stat screen

The dungeon was a little tough but then the move PK Freeze helped me manage against most of the enemies just fine, also I noticed the enemies that are allegedly rumored to be the 3rd strongest are weak to PK Flash but the former move came through yet again

You can heal secondary statuses near the mine once its open, and also I expected to see the buffalo stampede on the other side but they peaced out at some point

Say cheese sandwich!

In Fourside among so many of those クレイジータクシー I found a クレイジーおはよう and it blew my mind I wonder if it’s rare

I said it a bunch of times before but I love seeing what the talk of the town is, I completely forgot about Porky and wasn’t expecting him to be in cahoots with Monotori

I saw somebody say they want to go to Japan and eat ヒレカツ, I’m not big on meat but I didn’t know tonkatsu had like a fillet version

I wonder how speaking in hiragana made them confuse a hospital with a barbershop, I’m thinking about how the words might get mistaken with one another like 病院, 洗髪, 切る, 床屋, but I’m just not seeing the connection and drawing a blank lol

I love the tips. I’m so boring; I’ve been on black and white the whole time, haha.

Also I’m pretty sure the word they’re referring to in hiragana is 美容院.

Quick comments on this week

:joy:

Man that mole cave is easy to get stuck wandering in for a while. Pretty sure the same sort of thing happened to me first time I played too; it’s easy to miss one path and lose track of where you haven’t gone. I kinda love how the tone of so much of this feels like a stupid ダジャレ game. Like the mole thing isn’t particularly funny but they present it so earnestly and stick to it the whole way. I appreciate their No 3 background too.

It’s the return of Porky this week! Being kind of a little brat pays off a lot, huh? Meanwhile all our group is doing is losing tons of money paying for this band constantly.

For whatever reason I’ve never been into desert environments in games much and I guess that carries over to wandering this one, so hard to tell what you’re doing when it’s kinda featureless if you venture north. No big deal but this chunk of the game is me almost going “oh right, this does happen” because over the years it stuck with me the least. That’s very much about to change, though

I can’t remember if the lady in the elevator telling you not to ogle her when she turns around had her lines changed in English but it seems like a candidate for the kind of thing that wouldn’t make it through the localization, haha. There’s always some NPC pulling out something wild here.

A quick Google search for "earthbound elevator" and its recommendation of "girl" as the third word gets me this.

ヒップ

I see, I guess that’s their compromise. Turning ヒップ into English hips is usually not quite the same, but I get it

Thanks, granted I took the opportunity to add some flair to them because it was an impulse decision and I’ve never done them before

Thanks for answering my language questions again!

Week 6

The angle of the ground becomes more pronounced than ever with Fourside’s huge buildings, it’s an interesting look. My memory is vaguely tickled here, I think it won’t be long until we reach the part where my kid-self dropped the game. In my vision of the distant past, I see neon buildings.

I had to leave a couple of times to rest and replenish PP, but the mine didn’t feel too bad with the map. I also brought along a bunch of スッキリハーブ but ended up having to use none of them, somehow! Instead, they were thrown away one by one as I picked presents up off the ground. The moles were really cute, though. When the last one I fought started its dialogue with “1番強いこの穴のヌシと” I thought the joke was finally over, but sure enough it was actually the 真の3番目に強いこの穴のヌシ after all! You got me.

That would be my problem; I did most of it blind and I did eventually consult it to try to find where the last one was hiding but it’s easy to walk in a lot of loops, haha.

Oh yeah, I did it the filthy cheater way and I did it happily :joy: If I had more free time I’d love to wander around big old SNES labyrinths, but that’s not happening this week! Kudos to you for doing it the honest way!

Want more Fourside? There’s more Fourside :down_arrow:

The catchup continues

Week 6

My new favourite enemies are the skeleton scorpions that blast lightning at you in the desert - at least from a visual standpoint. The poison status effect is still annoying

Maybe I should go back and explore the desert area more because I kind of just muddled through and stumbled into the right path. I am sure there’s things I missed in that area, it’s just so big and featureless though

フォーサイド is cool - I always love a big city vibe in games, and this is no exception. I very much enjoyed exploring it and talking to all the NPCs. Seems like we’ve got a corrupt businessman in control of the town, who has the police in his pocket… No comment. Seeing ポーキー again was fun, I get the feeling he is becoming the recurring villain

I know writers who use subtext and they’re all cowards

I really loved the dinosaur museum. There’s not much in there, but it’s just so peaceful with the music, and seeing the big dinosaur (a replica, of course) was nice

It’s funny because I would absolutely watch a video/tv program of an idol visiting a dinosaur museum. I mean the other day I watched a video of a person visiting an insect museum to see an exhibition about cockroaches (it was fun)

I also enjoy this interaction

The gold mine was fun. I found boss no. 3 first. I did get a bit low on resources and trekked all the way back out… only to find out that I could’ve just gone through the central room (I did not know that was the central room at the time) and saved a long walk. Oh well, I didn’t die and was able to heal up and go back to finish up the last two bosses

In the course of clearing the dungeon I discovered that ジェフ’s ネバネバマシン is really good - it can paralyse enemies for about a turn. This doesn’t sound like much, but it often lets me output enough damage to kill without allowing the enemy to act, which is a big optimisation

Mechanics

If you had gone through the central room, you have noticed you can use the mice to instantly leave a dungeon, right? I used the ones they’ll give you here to make it more convenient when I was running low on resources.

Response

I actually couldn’t take a mouse for some reason. The mouse complained that I already had one, but I had placed it in storage with escargot a while back. So I wouldn’t have been able to get one anyway

Oh I see, guess there must be a limit on having one at all even if it’s in storage then. I haven’t tried storing them in this playthrough.

Just finished this week!

Thoughts

HA, thank you, this made me laugh
I love this game and it’s humor lol

I like foursides design!! Having all the buildings at a different angle made it really unique and cool :head_shaking_vertically:

I had an egg hatch into a chicken for the first time. I kept hearing this bird noise and I was like ?? But then I realized it was the chick! And then it started making a different noise when it turned into a chicken

I love how there’s both terrible and corrupt people (LOOKING AT YOU PORKY) but then also these chill dudes who just honestly and 素直に give this little boy a diamond they found cause he gave them a cookie once haha

Now that im done typing this im going to keep going with next weeks section!
