🍔 Mother 2 / Earthbound (Game Club) - Week 3

Welcome to Week 3 of Mother 2 Club

:house: Home Thread | :video_game: Game Club

This week’s pacing will feel very different from the first two weeks. We’re here for the Japanese, but an RPG is an RPG, after all. Expect to spend this week exploring and battling more than anything! (That’s why this week’s post is a bit on the light side.)

Week 3 May 15th
Last Week Week 2
Start Point Explore the cave to the east
End Point Visit Lilliput Steps
Next Week Week 4

:ribbon: Note: Near the end of this week, you’ll be asked to return to Twoson. Hold off on that for now, and aim for Lilliput Steps first.

A guide to this week (spoilers) 🐙 🛸 🧸

If you haven’t yet visited Orange Kid and Apple Kid, now’s the time to do so. Bring $200 and some food (or a condiment) for Apple Kid.

Rest up if needed, buy a Teddy Bear or two if battles have been feeling overwhelming (especially if you’re still below level 15), then head to the only new path available: the cave to the east. Once you find the :octopus:, head on back to Twoson.

After receiving a phone call, you’ll find Apple Kid isn’t home, but Orange Kid knows his location (at the park). Find and talk with Apple Kid, stock up (Hamburgers, Teddy Bears, money into the ATM), and then head back through the cave again.

The valley on the other side is long, winds this way and that, and has difficult enemies.

:deciduous_tree: Tip: If you encounter だいウッドー, it’s best to run away. When you defeat one, it may burst into flames, dealing fatal damage, and destroying your Teddy Bears.

On the other side, you’ll find Happy Happy Village, with a few houses to explore and two caves. After checking out town, you can visit either cave, but you’ll have an easier time by going north. After getting an important item at the end of that path, return to town. Rest at the bottom-left house for $50 if needed, then go to the big house for a boss battle.

After the battle, pass through the north cave one more time. Your next target is Twoson, but take this opportunity to enter the east cave for one more boss battle, and a melody at Lilliput Steps to conclude the week.

Guide to leveling up 💪🏻

If you’re finding you’re a little under-leveled and want to mindlessly battle while listening to or watching something, here’s a plan of action.

Do I even need to go out of my way to level up in Earthbound?

In general, no. Keep your money in the ATM, and if you get KO’d in battle, you’re simply back at the phone where you last saved. As you retrace your steps, you’ll naturally encounter more enemies, and you’ll naturally level up. Each time you defeat a boss at a sanctuary, you’ll typically be strong enough for some enemies to run away, allowing for easy wins against them for experience points.

That said, some people like to level up a bit extra so they have an easier time against enemies, fewer game overs, and less retreading the same grounds over and over.

Here is how much additional experience Ness needs to accrue from the last level up to reach the next level:

Next Level EXP Needed
10 615
11 797
12 1,003
13 1,233
14 1,487
15 1,765
16 2,574
17 2,538
18 2,973
19 3,459
20 3,996

Human enemies in Twoson give around 86 to 160 experience, depending on the character. If we take it as an average of 125 experience per battle, you’ll need to find and defeat about seven to 10 enemies per level. You’ll also earn an average of about $25, so you’ll earn about $175 to $250 for each level.

If going this route, I recommend putting everything you don’t need into storage, then buying eggs to hatch as you look for targets. Once the chicks become chickens, sell them for decent profit.

Once you reach at least level 12, you’re ready to take on tougher enemies. Play through until you get the eraser, then you’ll be ready to leave town. You may wish to buy a few Teddy Bears ($178 each :grimacing:), call Escargo Express to store them for you, and then head through the cave to the east.

You’ll find enemies much easier to come by here versus in Twoson, but you’re also further away from easy healing, and these enemies hit a lot harder. If they’re too difficult, return to town and buy a Teddy Bear or two to take into battle with you for protection, and run away from the trees. The UFO gets you 223 EXP, the robot 297, and the tree 356. Aim for the UFO and robot, and you should be able to reach level 14 in no time.

The final level grinding spot is on the other side of Happy Happy Village, the cave marking the final location for this week. The enemies in here give even higher EXP (bats 304, moles 456, and bears 609), but are even more difficult to take down. If you stored some Teddy Bears, you can call to have them delivered from the shop by the north cave.

Before taking on the last boss, it’s recommended to have Ness at level 22 and {redacted} at level 11 (only takes 1,176 EXP to reach). At this point, Ness and {redacted} will have β attack abilities.

General tips:

  • You should have Ness’s Healing α ability, which can cure the common cold.

Week 3

Whew, this week was a little more grueling than last week. The trees! Why do the trees explode?? Mystery of nature I guess.

Thank you for the tip about Healingα, I got sneezed on many times

I didn’t have a problem with the blue-blue boss, but the goons that Pokey sicks on you at the shack where Paula is kept killed me. My fault, I should’ve looked around for somewhere to heal asap before wandering around and talking to kidnapping victims. I only had 1PP left and no more healing items. Lesson learned.

The east cave was similarly rough, though mostly because Paula starts at level 1! I got deep into the east cave before she died and had to travel all the way back to the doctor to get her back up. Her HP pool is so tiny compared to my boy. I managed to get her up to level 14 before we reached the boss.

Loved the item description of the いのちのうどん found in the field between twoson and happy town. Not just because of the vibe, it taught me various status effects to watch out for. “へん” sounds scary.

You can be turned into diamond?? Now that’s fancy petrification.

Also favorite NPC dialogue this week, so unexpectedly cruel that it was funny:

Everyone gets inflicted with it at the end of Urusei Yatsura

If dancing in an endless 4-frame loop is へん, I don’t want to be ふつう.

I love the タコ消しマシン this week! Sets up a great pun later, too.

It’s crazy seeing how different the cult feels in Japanese with all the religious talk.

Week 3

Man that path through グレーとフルデッドのたに was absolutely brutal - all of those UFOs and whatnot giving me colds, and I just kept missing which dragged fights out so long (really frustrating). The trees exploding was also not nice, but I never lost that much health to it because I just mashed the A button through the end of the fight. I did end up finding a hat by being thorough and that helped because it took my defences up by like 10. Meant everything that was doing 12-15 damage was now doing 1. I did also learn to reroll enemies by moving far enough away and then back so I tried to avoid the most annoying encounters. Got to ハピーハピーの村 with a good amount of HP and PP remaining and the cultists weren’t much of a threat.

While exploring the village I came across this house and it was fun to try and decipher the text. It was more or less readable

カーペインター wasn’t a challenge, and went down pretty easily. Just crumped him with my bat. Then went and rescued ポーラ which was a big moment, we now have 2 party members! But she starts at level 1 and has like no HP. Still, the fight with the goons that ポーキー sets on you was easy (just used スネス’s PP AOE skill to take them out quickly

Next I set my sights on リリパットステップ. スネス got homesick early into the cave so had to go back out to recover. Then ポーラ died so I had to use the いのちのうどん. She then died again, but I was already deep into the cave so pressed on. Reached the boss, which I fought with スネス alone. Was a close thing, since I was already down on PP, but ultimately came out ahead and won. If ポーラ had been alive I wouldn’t be surprised if she died again. Getting to the steps did revive ポーラ so no issue there, and then most of the enemies in the cave going back were running away, and would auto-win if we back-attacked, so that did help for getting ポーラ’s level up a bit more

Week 4 => 🍔 Mother 2 / Earthbound (Game Club) - Week 4

I did this week pretty late since I was busy and also because at the end of last week I was itching to play some more!

Say cheese sandwich!

First I kinda forgot what was happening in the game and enjoyed using the bike because of Ness’ sprite here, and then I noticed I was faster than the enemies and thought it was funny and enjoyed using it even more. Then I kept on misreading my character’s name スヌーピー as スターピー because of a character from Starfy 3 which I’m also currently playing because the character in my pfp may make an appearance there

Then I kinda got a bit lost because I didn’t want to read too much of the guide and like reading it bit by bit, and then I got scammed by the Orange Kid! While making inventory space I tried using the chicken to see what it does but it just ran off and I guess I should of read the guide and sold it, I noticed with the ruler too I didn’t really know what to use it for, I noticed some of the item and PSI uses in the guide were great heads ups

And then I came across the haunted tunnel, I’ve seen a few of those in Japanese media.

And then I headed for Happy Happy Village and like ya’ll said the trek there was no joke, I’m just glad there were a bunch of magic butterflies, or maybe I just got lucky encountering so many. The most annoying enemy for me was those walking plants of all things, they stole so much PP

And then when I got there, I was gonna share the lady wishing Ness gets struck by lightning and the messy hiragana too. Somebody even followed me when I refused to donate and I think they did an excellent job making a screwed up cult town. Also I misremembered ブルブル as ブツブツ and just thought they were mumbling under their hoods lol good catch with the pun, I wonder if how they painted everything blue has anything to do with some of the civilian enemies faces turning blue

Then I found an item that says can increase your speed slightly, which is good to know because when equipping it, it only told me the offense and defense changes. My speed went from 8 to 13, I think that’s not a little but a lot!

Then Escargo Express really came through in the clutch, I found some broken machine parts in the garbage can from Apple Kid’s house earlier, and the description said the 3rd character can do something with it, and last week when I was talking about combining parts, I suspected that’s gonna be his thing. I also had some spare equipment to give to Paula and I didn’t have her yet (What? Uh oh)

Ya’ll aren’t gonna believe it but I accidentally fought through both bosses this week without Paula because I skimmed through the guide too fast (AGAIN)

I did the cave and then the cultists and then got the key, I shoulda realized I could’ve gotten Paula after the cultists and THEN do the cave, but I just thought “Nah this is totally where I’m supposed to be, this is normal for this game’s difficulty curve”

When I fought that mole, it was REALLY scary, right off the bat it could kill me in two charges and it had me in a healing loop immediately, and that’s when I realized maaaaybe I shouldn’t be here right now. But then I paralyzed it, then for 3 turns it couldn’t move, then for 3 more turns it kept on using it’s shield, then an additional like 2 or 3 turns it raised its attack, so it somehow went like EIGHT turns without attacking and I managed to beat it without Paula. I still can’t believe that’s how it played out, that’s gotta be my favorite moment from all of this so far

(By the way, I wonder how the cultists would’ve played out if you didn’t have the Franklin Badge?)

Ya’ll aren’t gonna believe how the end of this week went lol

I did not know this was a thing.

I wonder if I had it happen back when I played through as a young lad…

Considering Paula mostly just dies repeatedly in the cave, you didn’t miss out on much! (Except for EXP her.)

Rather than battling the boss, he lightning zaps you, and then you appear outside, near the blue cow.

First Boss Fight

I was going to ask this same question. It seemed a bit weird that the lightning would reflect back and cause the boss to injure himself if it wasn’t possible to get into that fight without the badge… Unless you can send store the badge by calling the delivery service? I mean, it’s handy for him to cause so much damage to himself. But it seems like a weird mechanic for a boss fight…

Anyway, as far as other things this week go:

Week 3 translation/localization comments

So first of all IMO, this week wins the award for most ridiculous, unnecessary change (so far). The English version actually swaps out the octopus statue for a pencil statue. They even went so far as to change the visual image on the screen… All for a pun in Apple Kid’s machine name - pencil eraser!? :person_facepalming:

And then in the opposite direction, they actually kept the woman’s line about wanting us to get struck by lightning… Granted, she didn’t then explicitly say we should die from it, but I’m shocked that they let the line stay as violent as they did, given how strict the censors usually were on these older games…

Also, I didn’t think to write down what Pokey said in Japanese when he left before his goons attacked us, so now I can’t remember. Did it sound anywhere near as lame and groan-worthy as ‘Later potater’? Because that is what he says in English… :person_facepalming:

Non-language gameplay notes

For some reason, I was dodging trees all over the place in the グレーとフルデッドのたに in my Japanese playthrough, but hardly any showed up in the English run-through. Given that, despite all the many colds I was infected with during my travels through there in both playthroughs, I found it way easier in English. Not sure if I was just lucky, or if they updated the game mechanic to spawn fewer enemies in English…

I found it a bit odd (in both versions) that the crows by the cabin are willing to attack, when all the way back in Onett they were running away from me…

That is a very suspicious statue behind カーペインター… I wish we could at least go up to it and ‘check’ it…

Ayumi/Suzaku/Paula…on the one hand, she died at least 4 or 5 times in the cave during my Japanese run through. And then once in my English run through, though that one was my fault - I somehow managed to not only forget to withdraw my teddy bears but to also completely forget to buy her any equipment. Whoops. On the other hand, I didn’t realize until I was fighting the giant mole boss in my English run-through…but she can revive people!! Conan/Ness took a hard hit and went down, and I thought for sure I was going to get a game over…but then I saw the Pray command, and it actually did revive Conan! No game over! That skill alone will make having her around very useful!

@steckums mentioned the タコ消しマシン setting up a pun too, I’m assuming ya’ll meant the English localization but I can’t wait to see if there’s more to it and if the machine makes a return or something. Right now it’s just sitting in my inventory and I should probably get rid of it but in the back of my head I’m thinking what if

I’ll talk more about the pun when we get there. Is there a breakdown of how far we go each week somewhere?

About the タコ消しマシン:

The Pencil Eraser / タコ消しマシン can be stored with Tracy for a while. You will need it in a few more spots later in the game that I’ll list vaguely below.

Once in the desert, and one optional one in Winters when you return there later.

Having すてる just before せつめい in the menu and not having a confirmation is evil!

Good bye, Luck Capsule, I barely knew ye.

I have one vaguely mapped out (based on the play times from a “let’s play” of the game"), but it’s not a stable mapping.

For example, I originally had Winters set to begin week 5, but when I pre-played week 4’s portion, it felt a bit short, so I moved that piece into week 4. This shifted the content of the next four weeks as well.

Expect to see the desert in week 6, and the final party member maybe likely possibly somewhere around week 10.

Only slightly late on catching up with what was meant to be my own club

This week was the major part I was a little worried about people running into, but it looks like everyone is surviving so far one way or another. I remember this valley being a real difficulty wall on my first playthrough that took me a while til I recognized the value of stocking up on stuffed animals. This time I went in with a few and, while the trip wore Ness out quite a bit, safely made it to the end in one go.

I really like Happy Happy Village, the arrival of a cult warping all of these people we see are otherwise normal is a pretty real little arc. It’s played very comically of course, but I love seeing how it changes the town and all the people roped in are ultimately victims. I also think the trip through the big meeting building is delightful, like an SNES game trying to simulate awkwardly pushing your way through a crowd. I imagine emulators might power right through it but let me tell you, that part chugs on the original Super Fami. No big deal in this kind of game but it felt like walking through molasses.

Paula starting so weak lets you get the dopamine rush of so many quick level ups, heh. I poked in and fought a few moles from near the entrance to get her a head start before taking on the cave for real. Our trip through the cave itself was fine; Paula is fun to use as a glass cannon mage type. She was pretty much instantly doomed at the level I arrived to the mole with her at though; her max HP was one shot range and while she did the surviving at 1 thing once, she died right after to another attack despite my best efforts to quickly shield and protect her. Ness made it through the fight alone but just barely – this marks the first time in my playthrough that I made use of the ticking counters to save Ness with a heal from a fatal blow. When you kind of know how to work with it, while this battle system is very simple and not hugely tactical, the number balancing feels good to me to create these close stressful moments.

Oh yeah I got homesick as well, another cute little touch. I’m always surprised by the use of セクシー in Japanese; while it has the same broad meaning it can clearly be seen as a little more… family appropriate in use. Ness’s mother says you’ll feel better hearing her セクシー voice. I remember the word coming up in Super Paper Mario too; I think they called Mario セクシー lol.

You’ve already planned better than I ever did :innocent:

1 luck point lost, time to reset the playthrough.

I actually found this week easier (if a lot longer) than the Giant Steps. I only died once, to the boss guarding the “special place” because I went there alone at first before rescuing Pōra.

We’re starting to have a lot of PSI abilities and enough HP to be able to tank a few turns, it makes the combat a lot more manageable IMO. I also learned that I should use my PSI abilities a lot more liberally than I used to since those butterflies pop up all over the place.

Then again right after going through the 3 Famicom Final Fantasies I probably have a lot more tolerance for bullshit than the average modern gamer.
