🍔 Mother 2 / Earthbound (Game Club) - Week 11

Welcome to Week 11 of Mother 2 Club

:house: Home Thread | :video_game: Game Club

Another short post this week (been keeping busy), but I’m sure you know the drill by now.

Week 11 Jul 10th
Last Week Week 10
Start Point Traverse the Swamp
End Point Borrow a Book
Next Week Week 12
A guide to this week 🐊🪨❄️📚

Make your way through the swamp. If you end up in the dark, you’ll reach a dead-end until you use the タカのめ item you received from the pyramid.

The swamp gives way to a cave. You can heal and save in here, but there’s not much else going on. Locate the guy with the horns and speak to him to learn about the next item you need to fetch.

Step outside and you’ll get a couple of phone calls. It turns out Apple Kid borrowed the book you need, went to Winters, then was kidnapped. Off to Winters!

You’ve been through the path from the boarding school to the lab, so just follow the same route as before (with a shortcut this time if you’ve brought the Octopus Eraser).

Once you reach the lab, heal up, speak with the mouse, and then head to Stonehenge. Check the note at the end of this post for information about Poo’s best (and only) weapon in the game. Then take out the boss.

The final leg of the fetch quest libraries. I don’t know if you need to speak with the guy in the mask first, but check the bookshelves and you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Find a place to save for the week (Onette, the swamp, or the cave village).

:dagger: Important: This week is the only chance to get the Sword of Kings weapon. Once you reach Winters, read up on it here if you want to go for it. If you’re not into hunting for a rare item drop, feel free to skip it, but there’s no other chance to get the item later.

If you do grind out the Sword of Kings, be careful about getting too high of a level. Ness needs to level up later in the game to get a bunch of stats. Don’t go above 75!

Also, don’t grind out the Sword of Kings it’s just not worth it :joy:

We’re finally to the pun this week with the こけしけしマシン! Honestly this is one of the best examples of localization I know of.

My experience this week was pretty good. I picked up quite a few words, like the name of the book, by just knowing what it would be in English.

I don’t know if you need to speak with the guy in the mask first

I am pretty sure you do. If you talked to him earlier he didn’t say much, similar to the lil guys in the village.

Week 11

Yeah I didn’t grind for the sword on my first playthrough and I’m not doing that now either, haha. Hoped by some stroke of great luck I’d get it right away just for the cool memory but nah.

It’s a really dungeon diving, gamey week this time, not too much to read. The swamp isn’t really hard but it’s one of those game areas that gives off the impression of being more draining than it is I think, because we slowly trudge through and there’s the constant (not very threatening really) HP drain. Just feels bad to be there. This game got to poison swamps before it was cool.

I’m really glad Poo is back quickly and we’ve reached the point where Jeff prevents bosses from getting a single move off if you want to use the effective strategy.

All the same, Stonehenge can be rough. Happy I got through first time on this run – I almost didn’t because it’s a nasty trick that the stronger starmen reflect ice (if not all magic, I don’t remember). Paula and Poo just one shot themselves on the first one we encountered. If I didn’t have a couple udons in the inventory I would’ve had to retry. Super memorable dungeon though, weird surreal vibes, most iconic enemy in the game, long enough to be pretty draining on your resources.

Week 11

I used a rocket20 for the first time on 帰って来たゲップー. All I can say is: wow! Does Puu even need the power to call meteorites from space? We have rockets already, we’re good.

I love that you go through that huge, dangerous base to rescue apple kid in the hopes of getting this important book, only to discover that he’s already returned it to the library. And then you go there and it’s just… on the shelf. It took me 3 life noodles to get to the end without turning back :joy:

And thank goodness that poor masked guy who’s apparently named ジェイソン has learned to express himself in a constructive way. Who knows what would have happened if he’d continued to be too shy to speak.

Week 11

I did grind for the sword, and it’s like 30 extra points of attack on プー. Not much for the grind you have to go through but at least he finally feels viable as a physical attacker? Anyway, it wasn’t too bad ultimately, and didn’t get above 75 on スネス (more like mid 60s)

I didn’t even know the Starmen reflected magic until the boss because I never bothered to use PSI on them. Just bonked them with phys attacks (until I found out I could just instant win if I equipped the powerful bat). The real annoying enemies were the エナジーロボ who exploded on death which did massive damage. Fortunately the first time I fought one I took it out last, so I knew to do that for future encounters to limit the damage. But mostly if I ran into one on its own I found it more effective to just run away

Speaking of those enemies, can they make up their mind whether it’s エナジー or エネルギ. Pick a lane smh my head. Don’t know if there’s a nuance between which is used but I remember this coming up in a club I took part in before

Big fan of the trolling behind having the book already be returned to the library. Love jokes at the players’ expense

🍔 Mother 2 / Earthbound (Game Club) - Week 1 - #47 by ChristopherFritz it indeed was a club you took part in before :face_with_tongue:

I was the one who brought it up in the first place but @ChristopherFritz had so many examples that I just linked their post instead

I got lots of screenshots this week, as well as lots I could just talk about instead of showing, and normally I’d organize them a little bit, but that’s because there’s usually just a few so not having a preview isn’t much of a problem. But this week there’s a lot so they’re in no particular order!

Say cheese sandwich!

I’ll start with the screenshots I didn’t upload

I thought it was so cool when Poo showed up, what an entrance. I was kinda worried I stumbled into an unbeatable fight because last time you needed the はえみつ which was now with escargo

And then I had a few screenshots of stuff I thought was funny, this game’s humour was on a roll this week. I liked when the mouse in the lab mentioned the “!!!” before Apple Kid got abducted, and when the Starman called him ちえのリンゴ.

This felt like that line I talked about earlier in the club where かのじょ was のかじょ and I was like “What do termites have to do with any of this”

I didn’t think about rearranging it until I was thinking about parsing, I was like こない? こないだ? だれも?

This part is disturbing it just came out of nowhere

The death beam just lying in the garbage got me good, mainly because I’m so used to finding Jeff’s weapons in a broken state that when I saw it I was expecting it to be a こわれたデスビーム

I was so glad I remembered I could search for magic truffles at the right moment in time, I couldn’t while Poo was gone because he had the nose. Just finding one was all I wanted, and they restore 80 PSI

It somehow clicked that the enemy’s name was the name of the flower, and then I thought “Wait a minute, I’m not just guessing, how do I know that” and it’s because the Pokemon Vileplume has the same name in Japanese (minus the oni part). Speaking of Pokemon I just found out that Jirachi not only represents wishes by being like a shooting star but also by having wishing tags like the ones you’d use in the festival Tanabata

Stonehedge was no joke, but the こけしけしマシン was joke, I liked it. After seeing けし in my inventory for so long, when we returned to Winter’s to get the melody, I saw the こけし and then I realized what the joke was going to be, the setup and wait was so worth it

It was a miracle I made it to Stonehedge’s boss the first time, everybody was around level 50 and when they used PK Starstorm against me they took out everybody except Ness almost immediately. I then grinded him up to level 72 taking the opportunity to gamble for the sword, and at that point I felt like I didn’t really need it. It felt like I went through like 50 gold Starman’s but idk if that’s how many I actually went through

By the way, I found not one but two broken items Jeff can fix while in Stonehedge

Responses

Jeff is a monster. One day if I replay Mother 2 again I’m going to have to set a no rocket20 rule and see what the bosses in the last stretch of the game do

Ooh it’s more interesting that someone went for it, nice. I’ve just set him on being a weaker Paula most of the time heh. I’ve managed to just kinda squeeze by some tough spots so I’m gonna be way lower level than some of you, not that it matters much anymore.

This time you helped me! I saw this and went “what in the world are you talking about” but was in the mood to just keep moving and didn’t stop to think for a second. It’s really not that bad when I actually take a proper look.

I don’t think I’ve ever gotten the nose and actually done this! 80pp is wild though, wow.
