Having a script handy has been convenient for me over at the xenogears club, so I went looking to see if there was one publicly available for this game too: Mother 2 japanese + some english scripts.
Japanese scripts are on the left and there are English scripts for the first 1/3 of the game or so on the right, which could be helpful for any beginner readers we might have here. Pictures of each character sprite are matched with their respective dialogue, itās pretty cute!
Thank you! I know youāve been great about incorporating character counts and planning in a way I probably wonāt manage
but Iāll keep it on hand and definitely try to remember to make sure itās shared in the main posts when the time comes.
Now that Boku is over as of this week I told myself I should get started playing the beginning of the game and planning for the early weeks, seeing how much I need to type to help it along, etc. Itās about time I do that when I get the chance. Assuming no issues letās say
Start date of Friday, May 1st
Weāre one week away from start time! Iām pretty excited. Hope everyoneās preparation to get a copy of the game is going ok
Talking about copies I have found that there is a psp āMother 1+2ā collection. From my limited research most of the changes should are QOL in Mother 1. So it shouldnāt have any script changes in Mother 2. (hopefully)
Never mind this section..
If youāre reading this, you might be using WaniKani or have used it in the past.
If you learned each kanji without fail as you worked your way up in levels, how prepared would you be for kanji recognition in Mother 2?
Iād say about level 21 is the sweet spot. Anything lower, and you may want that Mother 2 dialogue site up with Yomitan at the ready.
Disclaimer: This includes all item descriptions.
Feel free to check out my full charts and frequency list for the gameās kanji.
I donāt know if Iāll join it, but if I do, Iām ready!
Nintendo Switch:
Migaku:
Shrine:
Iāve also got my Switch friend code if anybodyās interested in Gamechat. Too bad Gamechatās part of NSO now though, I wouldāve offered it for those with a Switch but without NSO
Why kanji? The whole game uses kana, except some narration scenes, probably for dramatic purposes. So no need to know kanji to read this game.
Thatās a good question.
From the website that has the gameās transcript, I mistakenly thought the game used kanji!
Can you tell I havenāt even peeked at screenshots of the game in Japanese?
To be fair, having a good knowledge of kanji is often useful even in reading kana-only stuff. Generally knowing more kanji also comes with knowing more vocabulary which is useful in figuring out what words are being used
Yep definitely, but trying to understand a game that uses kanji is way more time consuming if you donāt know them. With kana you can read and search for meaning easily.
In fact, I made an app for searching kanji by their Wanikani radical names, in case someone finds it useful (for instance, type āscooter carā). But in this game it wonāt be necessary
Ha Iād forgotten the game is supposed to be kana only, too. To be honest I think thatāll be the hardest part of this gameās reading experience for me, because Iām so used to using kanji as a visual clue for which word means what!
Just got the Super Famicon Nintendo Classics app downloaded onto my Switch, so Iām all set for tomorrow! I canāt wait to start playing!
The ćć¹ć®å®¶ splashscreen got my hopes up but it is indeed full kana.
After all that Famicom Final Fantasy I donāt know if I have the ę°å (sorry, ćć¢ć¤) for it.
Also that isometric āAmerican suburban houseā look triggered a deeply buried trauma:
I havenāt played that, but I did play Home Alone 2 on the NES as a kid. Pretty sure it wasnāt good but I have fond memories of the absurd enemies, some very agile leaping elderly women especially.
Shame to not have you, but I get it. Have you ever played Earthbound before? Itās some sort of milestone that all kana text doesnāt really register as being too bad to me anymore. All katakana, on the other handā¦
I have not. Do you know what the weekly load will look like? Like compared to Trails for instance.
I just have too many clubs⦠Iām still a few weeks behind on Xenogears.
Should definitely be less reading than Trails, but heavier than a Final Fantasy week usually. Aiming to not be too crazy but move with enough purpose that this isnāt a year long club. That leaves a big range ā when I have the time later Iāll see if the script page shared in this thread is formatted decently (and has all the optional town dialog) for me to paste and count what week 1 is in characters. I expect the optional dialog will frequently be a huge part of the text per week, but I do think itās worth reading at least a lot of it cause the character contained in that stuff is great.
Yeah FF is pretty minuscule at this point.
Anyway, Iāll casually give it a try and see if I feel committing for the long haul. Definitely seems like an interesting game. Kana aside the dialogue in the starting area is pretty easy. I donāt really know if itās representative of things to come though.
Game Boy for me!
Iām wondering what the Mr. Saturn dialogue looks like.
If nothing else, itād be worth playing through in English (for someone whoās never played, but interested in 90ās RPGās).
And for anyone who doesnāt mind having a web browser open on the side, thereās the website with the script with kanji.
Nice, hope it works out for you and you could always be kind to yourself and replace Xenogears with this
Unfortunately I came to the conclusion that character counting isnāt going to work so well as an estimate because they put every single place name, character name, etc in there on top of extremely thorough extra lines for what happens every time you try to get some item with a full inventory, what if youāre talking as a character we wonāt see for a long time, on and on.
Also today I learned we donāt get a baseball bat emote (thereās the ball itself, but that doesnāt count). Weāre getting a hamburger instead.
