🍔 Mother 2 / Earthbound (Game Club) - Week 14

Welcome to Week 14 of Mother 2 Club

:house: Home Thread | :video_game: Game Club

Welcome to the final, and possibly the longest, most-dialogue-filled week of all.

Week 14 Jul 31th
Last Week Week 13
Start Point Enter the Space Tunnel
End Point Talk to Everyone

Warning: Once you enter the Space Tunnel, there’s no returning for supplies. Don’t save on the other side unless you’re fine with being stuck there.

If you’re struggling with the final final final boss, try to have someone use their unique ability.

After you defeat the boss, many people in the game have new dialogue, so you’d better go talk to them all.

I couldn’t wait to talk about about the finale, I know I played it like 5 days ago and yet I still can’t stop thinking about it

This game had so much personality, there’s so much funny dialogue and I really like the artstyle and battle backgrounds and the music was a bop, all the wacky segments and all the times society got corrupted kept me interested in the story too

I hope ya’ll enjoyed it as much as I did, now that it’s the final week, a final occassion!

Say cheese sandwich!

First and foremost we gotta talk about them having their brains converted into computer programs along with their souls implanted into robotic vessels. I can’t tell if this was a symbolic rite of passage like Magicant, or if it was just a random tuesday for this game. I thought it felt kinda spiritual or symbolic the way Andonuts put it, I was like oh damn when he went “You must shed your soul from the confines of your physical body”

I remember him mentioning the spaceship had healing/saving capabilities, and I thought he was alluding to the 老äșș that showed up immediately, I thought I heard the healing sound or something similar when he showed up so I thought he was going to heal us and that was the healing capability lol

I felt bad for Andonuts because he used せめど twice, he was like “At the very least let me get a good look at your appearances” and for both their sakes he said “I at least wish for you to push the button by your own hands” knowing their souls may not return and among the group was his own son

And when everything was all said and done with, he revealed that he almost went with them, now I want to see that scenario too

I had a good time wandering through spacetime, I was less interested in the enemies and more interested in exploring my surroundings albeit linear. It felt like we were astronauts. And then I couldn’t believe how abruptly the game got freaky and said “this is it, climb up this scary foreboding carnal digestive track”. Porky got freaky too, and everything was getting freaky I’ll tell you that much

The shift in music from chiptune to metal was awesome, also Porky’s theme before the fight made me think there was a crow outside irl.

But now I’m wondering

What the heck is Gig? What do you MEAN he can’t think or doesn’t understand what’s happening or all those other things Porky said? And the things he HIMSELF said

I feel like when the machine is off and you see the state he’s in, he’s so incoherent and corrupted that I feel like he’s more of a raw embodiment of negative emotions and torment, and in that sentiment I feel like what Porky said makes sense. But I wonder, is he really just an embodiment of negative emotions? If he can’t think then what’s got him so tormented? The fact that he says べもだち and きもちいい and repeatedly calls your name has got me the most curious, are these his thoughts? Your thoughts? Porky’s thoughts? And what about his influence? It’s corrupted everyone throughout the globe, and I like to think it corrupted even Ness himself with the boss in Magicant. When fighting him for real he even takes the form of Ness. My guess is that he’s not only a representation of people’s fears (which probably would explain how he corrupted so many) but also neglect, hence him saying べもだち is like him yearning for friends, and when in Magicant when talking to Ness and Porky, the interpretation I got was that they both felt neglected

If you couldn’t tell in the last screenshot I kinda ran outta udons oops. I put up the omega PSI shield in the first phase, big mistake. I thought Gig was saying new things and assumed it was a progress indicator so I didn’t realize it’d be unwinnable without Paula. I also like how the long lines of dialogue also double as a climax for the concept of “finish the turn quick to heal quick” and the final boss happens to be the most difficult for having the longest turn (now I wonder if it would’ve been advantageous to set the text speed to fastest)

And then when Paula’s prayer reached somebody else and I realized what was happening, it blew my mind! It was so much fun pointing at the TV and getting hyped up knowing that I was the one saving the day, ya’ll better have done that too! I’ll look dumb if I was the only one reacting like it’s Dora the Explorer. I knew it was going to be for something big when they asked for my name a second time in alphabetical letters and said to do it right because it was going to be important. The way the name gets revealed bit by bit almost made me think they’d escalate it to the alphabetical form during the fight

Then back to the present, with all the new dialogue, splitting the finale into two weeks was the right call. I would’ve wanted to go directly to the endgame, but in hindsight, if we did do that I probably would’ve been out of steam near the end lol. But the ending bummed me out, I wanted to see the Tonzura Brothers! They’re the most important characters! Oh well, at least I got to see Venus. I really wanted to see everybody’s reaction to the the aftermath of the attack on Onett, but nobody mentioned it, either that or I missed someone

Oh right I also had this screenshot, I don’t remember if we’ve seen them say ゆ before, but seeing it made something click, I think maybe the swirl on their spaceship is based off their font? (Which I’ve heard is based off Shigesato Itoi’s daughter’s handwriting)

I also messed up the screenshot but back at home, I love when the dog is like “All the other dogs don’t know, but I know” that’s such a funny line lol

And finally, the credits, and seeing what all the cheese sandwiches were for, and what my name was for, complemented by that awesome medley, that and me shouting at the TV, those got to be my favorite parts of this whole finale

Gig/Giygas is one of the coolest end bosses in JRPGs! He’s not some weird demi-god type creature like in Final Fantasy or some evil dude with a sword. Just some mysterious enigma that throws incomprehensible attacks at you and babbles on about some weird stuff. It almost seems like you’re doing it a favor. Fun fact, Itoi’s inspiration for this fight was the feeling that he had as a small child, wondering into a movie he didn’t understand and how unsettling it was.

The biggest surprise to me was the ending screen saying 「To be continued
」where in English it says 「The End
?」

Oh! Be sure to both せ぀めい and ぀かう the 手玙 you find!

Thanks all for participating. When I set out to learn Japanese in April of last year, my “big goal” I set out to do was to finish Mother 2. I’m sure my extensive knowledge of the game in English carried quite a bit, but I still can’t believe I actually did it. I’ve played through this game every 18-24 months for almost my entire life and I got to experience it in a new way. I’m excited to see how much I’ve improved next time! I’m hoping to play some games I don’t have extensive knowledge in next, like Mother 3 or some Dragon Quest game!

We did it! Congrats to everyone finishing and thanks so much for joining for my game choice  . And of course huge thanks to @ChristopherFritz for hosting most of the club, you did great and really helped me out.

This is the 71st game (counting visual novels) I’ve completed in Japanese!

I mentioned it in the home thread but one more shoutout for Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass, an indie game with a similar vibe to Earthbound that I absolutely love. If you enjoyed this I think you’re very likely to like that one too.

Great job, I’m really happy for you. Mother 2 has some unique challenges to the text honestly, no doubt you could handle a lot from here.

I am hoping to continue with some of you all to Mother 3 if there’s still interest (there certainly seemed to be at the start of this club) whenever works out for us. In theory I have space to add games, like I can make the time, but it’s hard for me to commit to hosting cause I always seem to have health problems cropping up these days
even now there are a few somewhat unsettled things that will hopefully be fine but could spiral into another problem. It makes me wary about hosting but I also want to try to do it.

Me too! I’ve only played DQ11 and it’s constantly on my mind to give that series a full runthrough. I feel like this site needs a DQ series club the way the Final Fantasy one is running. Maybe after FF has had a little more time to progress, I dunno.

I’m really glad to hear how much you enjoyed this, had a lot of fun reading your updates.

Now then, the finale

The atmosphere of the cave of the past is so cool, the game just suddenly into dead and cold territory before pushing into the abstract body horror. The enemies are kind of annoying, had lots of deaths straight away from the starmen one shotting people, those one enemies explode on death and can just be annoying to finish with the self heal, other enemies steal items
it’s like designed to aggravate. All the same with a little luck we pushed through, and it gives the area this oppressive unpleasant vibe it needs.

I do love how much Andonuts doesn’t want to have to send us on this journey, and the transition “cutscene” to separating from our bodies is pretty unnerving in its implications. The robots are cute though, haha.

I’ve never really wanted to pin myself to a firm conclusion about Giygas because the abstractness works in its favor, but it’s worth mentioning how much one of its forms has been said to resemble a fetus. It’s an incomprehensible horror but doesn’t seem exactly malicious. From what we know it is shown to be planning and trying to fight Ness (out of self preservation) so it seemingly once was a little more human-like but Pokey says something to the effect that now it’s too far gone, not really able to think or anything IIRC. It’s most unsettling that way, for as horrific and dangerous as it is, when it’s just repeating Ness, single word emotions, べもだち, this feels like putting down a rabid wild animal more than anything.

I mentioned before that the backgrounds look cool on a real CRT. Well, the Giygas fight was just incredible.

At least we get our happy ending for saving the world. I’m a real sucker for the form of looking back at the people we met on the adventure and gaining strength that happens with the prayer. Persona games do something similar sometimes. The 4th wall break is lovely. They were right! I was praying!

I admittedly didn’t explore the world too hard but there is a cool list of some of the major changes and things to do in the English guide. I love that you can go retrieve the library book and return it.

Last time I took Paula home like she wanted but this time I convinced her to stay with Ness and she met his mom. Very cute.

responses

Oh yeah that was interesting too, even though it went by quick, it said something like ă“ă†ă’ăăźă—ă‚‡ă†ăŸă„ă‚’ă€ă‹ă‚ăȘい. Ya’ll are probably right about the abstract part and with the inspiration too maybe I’m looking too deep into it, but that’s a cool thing to base it off of, and it was indeed unsettling! I’m just so interested because of how unsettling it is so I like hearing theories and all that stuff

I’ll say it too, that’s impressive having to deal with things like the lack of kanji and saturn valley, did you end up jumping into the game earlier than you thought because of the club?

That’s quite a lot wow, now I want to start counting, I want to say I’ve done like 10 or max 20 depending on leniency with the types of games and length

I’m going to finish the rest of Ace Attorney 3. This was my first game club, it’s such an awesome concept, I know there’s the FF one here but I feel like they’re just starting to gain traction and I’m looking forward to whatever’s next. Who knows maybe even I’ll start one someday. I’m interested in Mother 3, it played a part in me being interested in Mother 2 in the first place, but maybe I would’ve wound up here anyway because I don’t remember how I started Mother 3 in the first place

Actually no! I usually play it around Mother’s day. Decided to just jump into it in Japanese because I’ve found that you’re never “ready enough” and you just need to do it. I made it through Threek that weekend. Noticed that the club was a little bit behind me when checking the forums for something else so I decided to participate.

(I also finished my playthough like 3 weeks ago :joy:)

I actually managed to catch up! I haven’t actually played through this week’s content yet, but I just now finished week 13 and can actually play this final week at the same time as the rest of club! Yay, go me! Definitely looking forward to seeing the ending in the next couple days!

We did it!

The end

After a game filled with bizarre magic and aliens, the end didn’t hold back on the weirdness, either. I was really taken aback when Andonauts said that he’d have to transplant the kids into robots, enough that it gave me a “did I read that right?” moment, which is rare nowadays! The sequence had a lot of gravity to it with the way the kids were shown knocked out one by one, but it ends with such a cute lil robot train.

The final boss is certainly something else. I was confused when it took Ness’s face, thinking it was reflecting him in some way? Definitely not what I’d expected.

That would explain it! That is, that it’s unexplainable

The third phase is the only spot where I ran into some trouble but miraculously Paula went basically untouched throughout that whole part of the fight. Everybody else was getting まん, しびられた, or insta dead, but she somehow skipped all of it. Wasn’t sure if that was scripted or if I got lucky.

Pokey has been gross all game but he transcends into creepy as heck in these final moments. I was able to figure out the praying thing quickly enough thanks to the long (well, it felt long) bit where he mocks the kids about asking for help. Then I held out for a few prayer scenes but of course eventually gave in and teared up. I’m such a sucker for ‘everybody saves the world’ sequences like this! Don’t look at me! :sob:

I didn’t go around talking to everybody for new dialogue, but I talked to everybody I came across on my way to Twoson and then Onett. And the letters were very sweet!

Loved the character credits, and also love that dad is represented as a phone. I had a moment when Ness, mom, and Tracy gathered to look at the photo book/credits and there was a door kind of noise. I thought the dad would finally be revealed coming to join them, but it was just the dog :joy:

I noticed this during the defeat sequence! The abstract fetuses repeat in a way that reminded me of a 3d illusion pattern, where you can see a hidden picture if you unfocus your eyes. Combined with the flashing, it was really unpleasant to look at.

Thank you so much @ChristopherFritz and @Daisoujou for putting this club together! It’s been really fun to revisit this game and finally play it to the end. Such a charming game with unexpected heartwarming moments. I’ll be glad if I never see ćœŸæ˜Ÿă•ă‚“ text ever again, though

They await your return in Mother 3 :innocent:

Terrible news. But I’m still willing to play :stuck_out_tongue:

It is done*

*I beat the final boss, but haven’t gone around talking to everyone yet. Might edit in more after I do that but pressed on time tonight so will have to get back to it later (thank goodness for save states)

Glad I got to finally play this game for the first time with all of you. It lived up to its reputation and more! I would love to play both Mother 3 and Mother 1 if there’s interest. Also a Dragon Quest club would be cool too.

What A Final Boss, huh

I was scared going into ă‚źăƒŒă‚° that I’d run out of PP or someone would die at the worst moment. I did have a few deaths, but ăƒ—ăƒŒ was able to revive and a couple of さべりăčんべう kept his PP up. Didn’t even need the マゾックプăƒȘン that ă‚čネă‚č was carrying. Really in the final phase it was all about keeping ăƒăƒŒăƒ© alive so I had ă‚čネă‚č and ăƒ—ăƒŒ keep healing (with ă‚čネă‚č doing party-wide heals)

I’d stocked up on bottle rockets before heading into the final area and that was a good idea. Got me through the first phase without too much pain. On the leadup I didn’t bother fighting any of the ă‚šăƒŠă‚žăƒŒăƒăƒœ enemies, just ran whenever they appeared. The starmen and other enemies were fine, and I barely needed to heal as a result which let me preserve my PP

I loved the prayer scenes - seeing all those people from our journey was great, and the reveal that the final one was the player was really cool. I think this is where playing in the club format helped because that was weeks ago for us so it wasn’t fresh in my mind

The backgrounds in the fight were really cool. I loved the backgrounds in pretty much every fight tbh, but here they touch an aesthetic I quite enjoy. And the music was great too

When I pre-played the week with the name confirmation, I wasn’t expecting it to show in hiragana, so I accidentally pressed A past it without seeing it. Although I knew it would come up at the end, and I saw from others that there’s something about the name being in hiragana, I was completely stumped trying to figure out what the game was trying to tell me when it said, ă€Œă—ă”ă‚ŒăăŸă…ăŽă”ă‚Œ ごぃは ă„ăźă‚Šă€ă„ă‘ăŸă€‚ă€ I took a screenshot and deciphered it afterward. (If not obvious, my name in ABCs was the same as my forum name, with a separating space.)

Finished! I know I’ve played this game before but it was a long time ago, so there was a lot of the later parts of the game that I had forgotten. Even if I did fall massively behind, I still had a lot of fun! @Daisoujou, thank you for nominating it for the club! I’d be interested in playing 1 or 3 (provided they are available in a format I can get a hold of). No promises that I’ll do any better in keeping up with the group, though
@ChristopherFritz, thank you so much for hosting the threads. Once I fell behind, I really needed them (and the guides you posted) to avoid overwhelming myself as I tried to catch up.

Final battle notes (brief)

I had completely forgotten just how creepy that final sequence is, especially since we don’t ever really get any actual answer as to what ă‚źăƒŒă‚° is
Also, the mechanical sounds in the background when the kids minds were being put in the robots were probably intended to be Andonuts building the robots
but my mind was very stubbornly picturing gruesome images of what might be happening to the kid’s bodies with those sounds. ::shudder::

One other note: Am I the only one who didn’t realize that the highest level of Psi Healing was capable of reviving people? I foolishly used up all my reviving items before I even reached the final boss because I didn’t want to run from fights
and then Paula promptly got knocked out round 2 of ă‚źăƒŒă‚° final form. I ended up putting the game on pause for half an hour while I panicked over whether the fight was now unwinnable. Luckily I decided to check to see if any of my recovery psi could possibly help before giving up and restarting the section! :face_exhaling:

I’m glad you all seem to have enjoyed the game!

Since I had totally forgotten mechanics by now, I definitely didn’t notice immediately. I caught it sometime earlier than this week, but it’s not at all what you’d expect based on the RPG conventions that have taken off. Resurrection from death is usually its own spell separate from how this treats it as basically a status effect.

I’m down to do Mother 3, and 1, whenever people are available for it. Honestly really thinking about Dragon Quest but I’m watching and considering how overloaded with game clubs this forum seems given the significant overlap between clubs. And I should still run more Boku if people still want to join for it when I get around to it

Anyway, no committing to anything TOO big until after the end of this month. I have a medical scan coming on something that’s PROBABLY nothing but has at least small odds of being cancer so if I’m really unlucky, well, that’s probably going to change my plans to say the least :skull: Probably nothing though and maybe I’ll give starting something bigger a shot once I’m cleared.
