Mnemonic Draw Thread

This was suggested by @konekush in the “What is a durtle” thread a while ago, I think it can be fun and useful:

A thread for people to request and post mnemonic drawings!

  • I hope more artists will draw here too, skill level doesn’t matter!
  • Feel free to request WaniKani mnemonics or your own mnemonics. Or if you’re drawing, feel free to modify or abandon mnemonics that aren’t suited for drawing.
  • And don’t hesitate to post your drawing if it’s already been drawn, it’s fun to see different takes on an idea!
  • We’re all different WaniKani levels but I don’t think it matters too much, as we can look up items of any level.

Here’s one I modified to make more sense to me. The radical Axe:
axe

And I prepared a few kanji mnemonic comics! It helped to use the WaniKani color coding on these, blue for radicals and pink for kanji.

That is excellent. But it’s going to be difficult for higher-level radicals…

Hey, that middle one is level 55! Don’t go confusing me like that

Yeah, I looked at the higher levels and found one I knew the radicals for :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks! Do you mean they’re difficult because they’re based on other high level kanji and radicals? The mnemonic is meant for people at that level, so I guess the drawing would also be meant for people at that level, without having to explain each radical.

Edit: Ah, sorry, you were replying to the axe picture! Yeah, most radicals can’t be drawn like that.

An “axe” is something physical that you can draw. If a radical’s name is somewhat abstract, and if it has many strokes, like WaniKani / Radical / Righteousness , it’s probably going to be a tad more intricate. But I’m sure it can be done, just not as straightforward as an axe hitting a tree.

Yeah, I know :\ Very few things look like what they mean

And here’s a drawing request! The mnemonic for Western Style 洋, with a sheep riding a tsunami :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for separating the comics into 3 different strips. I was reading all of them at once and wondered why the story was so incomprehensible

Ah, sorry x) Tried separating them more now, with the kanjis between

Here’s a kanji mnemonic drawing not in comic form

I wish the wanikani team would comission you to do all the kanji and radical mnemonics! These are too good !

I leave a challenge to you: one for 履 might be kind of hard!

Thanks, glad you like them! :stuck_out_tongue:
And here’s the boots mnemonic! Instead of a flag loiter (what even is that), I used an alien loitering by a flag… And then the part about the reeds (り) didn’t work, so I used ripped apart and R.I.P. instead.

You deserve the scorn of Aya! :angryaya:

The reeds weren’t working for me too so I also did my own mnemonic on this one. But now it has been replaced by this comic!

@plantron s-sorry Aya!

Sorry Koichi too, I guess

Trying to draw a bird that looks like the bird kanji, with a long beak following two of the lines…
On the white 白 bird, the line on the face is visible, not so on the black crow.

Oh wow this is very helpful. Those similar kanji can really benefit from this kind of drawing.
