🔊 🎙 Listen Every Day Challenge - Fall 2023 🍁 🍂 - Volunteer needed to keep the challenge going!

I forgot that Satori Reader had some great audio on it! This is a really solid idea, I like the idea of relistening afterward again without text after the first two runs.

This is also very helpful, and practical! I think I’ve been approaching my skill-building in a bit of an overly academic way, trying to be very systematic about it, but it makes sense that a mix of several methods might actually probably be the best way for me to engage with audio.

Thank you! (ᵔ◡ᵔ)

Great, I’ve been waiting for this thread to show up :sweat_smile::partying_face: Somehow it’s easier for me to get into the habit work something new when I sort of have to answer to someone other than myself… I can’t wait to get started on the challenge! :four_leaf_clover::muscle:

At my level, I still need the subtitles. I’ve tried to watch shows without them, thinking I’d get enough visual cues to help me along, but found myself zoning out pretty quickly.

Rewatching a few minutes (<5) without subtitles after watching the full show has been helpful. I reinforce something almost every time–new vocab, greater understanding of men’s speech (which I’m awful at), recognizing numbers, verbal sounds that aren’t exactly words but indicate agreement or refusal, etc. Watching the whole thing twice wouldn’t be sustainable for me, but rewatching a few minutes has been well worth the effort.

My goals are to listen to something level-appropriate and something native every day, except for Oct. 30 - Nov. 9 (I’ll be at a writing residency, and want to focus all my efforts on that). Here are the resources I’ll draw from:

Level-appropriate:
Japanese with Shun Podcast (Amazon Music Podcasts)
Nihongo con Teppei Podcast (Amazon Music Podcasts)
JapanesePod101.com
Japanese Stories for Language Learners (Book with CD)

Native-level:
NHK Radio News Podcast (Apple Podcasts)
Radio Kishiwada Livestream
はじめてのおつかい (Old Enough!) (Netflix)
The Journalist (Netflix)
Midnight Diner (Netflix)
Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories (Netflix)

Thanks, @omk3, for keeping this going!

I’ve been unsuccessfully trying to listen to the news from that site - the player seems to play (on Mac Safari) but no sound is heard, while the player doesn’t even appear to play for me on Mac Chrome.

What browser are you using to listen to it?

(I can listen to Radio Kishiwada Livestream with no problems on Mac Safari)

Yikes, I couldn’t get those links to work either. I subscribe via Apple Podcasts. I’ve changed the link to that. Thanks for letting me know.

I can listen to it properly via the apple podcast site, thanks…

Another first timer here for this challenge

Listening is definitely my weakest skill, and I’d really like to try hard and improve it rather than sweeping it under the rug, so this seems like a nice way to help with accountability

My main resources will be:

  • Japanese with Shun Podcast on Spotify
  • Nihongo con Teppei Podcast on Spotify
  • Tadoku graded readers on Youtube
  • Anime tie-in audio dramas

Good luck everyone :muscle:

Kazu encounters a Japanese 高校生 fan and has a cute conversation (which doubles as listening practice if you avert your eyes from the subtitles)

Japanese part starts just after 19:45-ish

Hello everyone! :maple_leaf:

I’m so excited to be back to participate in this challenge as I couldn’t participate in the Summer challenge this year because of my Uni exams (I graduated!). The Winter Challenge had helped me in improving my listening skills to a great extent, so I’m eagerly looking forward to participating in the challenge this time around and post regular updates. がんばります!

I’ll be taking the JLPT N2 exam in December, so I’ll focus on doing JLPT listening quizzes, however, I also wish to immerse myself in native Japanese media, so I’ve decided to use a variety of resources for this challenge. I’ll mark an emoji against the day depending on what activity I did that day:

For tracking Listening practice

:headphones: - JLPT N2 Listening Practice [Grammar explanations/Quizzes etc.]
:studio_microphone: - Podcast episode
:clapper: - Dorama/Movie
:jack_o_lantern: - Anime ep/Anime Movie
:open_book: - Audiobooks [Aozora Roudoku]
:zap: - HP 1 Audiobook
:roller_coaster: - YouTube videos/vlogs

Doramas I plan to watch for this challenge:
Our Sister’s Soulmate
(currently watching)
Quartet
Dearest

Anime I Plan to Watch for this challenge:
My Happy Marriage
Spy x Family

My progress so far:

I usually immerse through Youtube and or Spotify and I try to get around an hour or two each day but might be able to get more in as I am currently on holidays.

本好きの下剋上 1 : オットーさんのお手伝い (20 min). First time listening only, second time listening with minimal reading. Frequently used strategy these days, because I listen out of convenience.

日本語の森 on Malaysian food. I haven’t been there yet, but I knew (?) about the food a little.

October 1st:
:speaker: :desktop_computer: Miku Life Update / Life in Bali (14:36)

I love Miku’s videos, she’s so easy to listen to and always interesting! In this video, she talks about what her time in Bali has been like so far. She started by explaining her teaching background, how she’s always lived something like a “digital nomad” lifestyle (she seems to enjoy using this phrase today lol) and has traveled the world to learn and teach a lot in her life.

In Bali, she first notes how peaceful and friendly the atmosphere and people are. She’s surprised by how ecologically friendly (is this the best way to translate エコ意識が高い? ecologically conscious?) the country is, how there are no plastic straws or plastic utensils where Japan is very plastic-centric. I was really fascinated when she started talking about the Balinese religious practices and many of them have direct comparisons to ancient and respected Japanese practices, such as using water to purify one’s body in a type of worship (she explained how this is called 禊 / みそぎ in Shinto practices). She talks a little more about temples and wildlife, and wraps up the video by laughing at how crazy the street traffic is organized in Bali, which reminds me of traffic in Thailand.

In all, I didn’t have to read along with the Japanese subtitles much except to figure out set phrases every so often. She speaks fairly quickly in this video, which I’m trying to improve my understanding of, and what I could parse was very understandable. A nice start to this challenge for me! ^–^

Question: Does anyone know the Alexa command that will play Japanese Podcast for Beginners (Nihongo con Teppei)? I’ve tried a million variations on my Echo Dot but can’t get it to go.

I finished 封刃師 S1 | L28 today and it was the kind of fun, mindless entertainment that I needed. Nothing too heavy, aside from a few scenes didn’t miss much despite no JP subs, bite sized episodes so I wasn’t forcing myself to sit still (although I have taken to watching shows on the treadmill again  ).

I have some heavier shows in my ‘already started’ backlog I need to finish, will see if I can actually make myself do it :upside_down_face:
