Just leveled up for the first time in forever (1230 days to be exact) and I love the new level up graphic they show at the top of the page. Feels super rewarding and is honestly just so much fun. the level up email is great too. After using WaniKani for so long, it’s just really nice to see how much effort they put into little things like that.
I thought my time taken from level 3 to 4 was pretty egregious, but level 22 was pretty bad haha. Maybe I’ll be able to stay consistent and 23 won’t take so long.
I’m just getting back from what I thought was a long break, also at level 22. It’s less than a year for me though. Are you having trouble getting back to it after that long or does it seem familiar?
I’ve gotten my pile of immediate reviews down from a few thousand to zero in the last couple weeks and I’ve started doing daily lessons and reviews again. I just don’t remember what it was that made me stop previously so I’m not sure if something like that will come up again. I will try to always do my reviews even if I don’t do lessons that day though. I feel like I’ll stick with it now that I have a study log and all. Taking the break honestly feels like it helped more than it hurt. Taking time to not do reviews all the time let me study grammar some and now it’s a bit easier to read.
For me, I think I had forgotten how to have enjoyment in the process itself.
I started journaling about my review/lesson sessions each day, even if it was something small like:
Anyway, I have 93 WaniKani reviews waiting.
Done. With 87% accuracy. Oh, I spoke too soon, there’s 19 more now. And I finished those with 95% accuracy (missed the 費用 meaning right at the end). I should do at least 5 new lessons while I’m on it. Well I did the entire 15 set instead. Go me!
(excerpt from an actual entry, which I obviously wrote by going back and forth between WK and writing it).
Once I started timing myself, recording my accuracies, or otherwise making a “game” about it, I started to remember how it was often easy to knock out a whole slew of reviews. And so I was less likely to end up getting overwhelmed by seeing the review count pile up.
Yeah, I think a journal or study log really helps keep track of what you’re struggling with or how you’re doing. So whether it’s published or not, just updating it as you go can be motivating. For me I think one of the things that happened around when I dropped it was my first attempt at reading. I was reading enough manga in a day that I wasn’t paying as much attention to lessons and suddenly I had many apprentice items that just didn’t really click because I hadn’t learned them well in the first place. One morning I was at the doctors office with over 400 reviews and just told myself I’d get to it later, then it had been months since I’d touched it.
haha that’s a tough record to beat. It’s rare I see people still active who joined before me. How has your Japanese studying been going recently?
Are you having trouble getting back to it after that long or does it seem familiar?
@SpiderWeb I never fully stopped using WK, but this summer I started doing more consistent reviews again and it was a bit of a rough start (50-60% correct on my reviews). Only took a couple of those to get back to 90%+. And I really only had about 500-600 reviews at any one time.
so I’m not sure if something like that will come up again.
For me, I usually just forget or get too busy. It’s pretty easy haha definitely happens pretty often and the reviews can be daunting, but doing a few reviews a day is better than nothing
Hey, congrats and good luck. At the tender age of too dang old I’m about to start working as a junior associate attorney, myself, it seems! I’ll let you know if I survive.
