Wow, I can’t believe I was finally able to hit level 60. What a long process full of many hours and many of the most annoying leeches of ALL TIME haha. I’ve spent 600 days almost straight using this, which is crazy now that I’m typing it out. I’m so glad that the journey is winding down, and the journey into reading more difficult content can start to pick up even more. That being said, I have always largely lacked motivation to read, as manga hasn’t really ever piqued my interest all too much. What are some recommendations you all have?
what do you like to read in English (or your native language)? if you need a place to start, maybe try reading translations of those things into Japanese.
i’ve been (slowly) reading ようこそ実力至上主義の教室へ, which is a light novel series (think, approximately “YA” in the US). it’s the basis for a manga and an anime, which is how i got into it, but it’s definitely not a manga, although the themes are very high school drama haha.
alternatively you could go for some of the internationally renowned classics of Japanese literature? Murakami, or (modern adaptations of) things like The Tale of Genji or The Pillow Book?
as a final suggestion, if you’ll be in Japan or near a Kinokuniya, just browse a physical bookstore

As for reading suggestions - Natively is a great site to find books. Reading difficulties are graded and you can read other people’s reviews. There’s also the WK bookclubs - reading along with others can definitely help keep you motivated.

Congrats on level 60! If you haven’t read anything yet then manga is not a bad place to start. You may have level 60 kanji knowledge, but if you’ve not read anything but textbooks you may be surprised how difficult reading native content is. Manga gives you exposure to lots of casual speech, but with some pictures for context, and the ability to get through a single volume with a satisfying efficiency.
Beginner book club here has read a variety of (relatively) simple books and manga that can be a good place to start. I enjoyed コーヒーが冷めないうちに (Intermediate Book Club) as the first adult novel I read (intermediate book club). コンビニ人間 🍱 Repeat Book Club (also intermediate book club) is another popular first novel - there have been two book clubs reading that on here.
