Kanji Displaying Differently In Reviews And Topic Pages

Today I was doing my reviews, and I am seeing a few kanji that are looking different from before. Is there some kind of browser font that is causing this issue? I am on the exact same browser and platform that I have been using before this (Chrome, Windows)

For example:

Sky looks like this in the review section:

But then when I go to the actual Kanji page it looks like it used to:

Is there a way I can fix this? It is happening to a ton of kanji today…They look similar but I am missing words I do know because the slightly different writing of the kanji is throwing me off, and the inconsistency between pages is troubling.

Thanks!

Fixed it!

Looks like Chrome did an update and wiped out all the language settings…thanks Google…

So if you see this check this kanji page and check how the “fix” kanji is displaying in the "Context’ section. Its the easiest to see if the browser is defaulting to Chinese vs Japanese version of the Kanji since the difference is so distinct and less subtle: https://www.wanikani.com/vocabulary/正直

If that’s the case go to your settings and add (or remove then re-add) Japanese to your Chrome settings then restart the browser.

Happy learning!

Yah, I had to do this with my Firefox a few months back too.

If it’s showing as Chinese in some places then maybe some parts of WK are correctly marking up the text as Japanese but other parts are not (so in those places your browser config matters). If so this would be a website bug too.

Were you using scripts by any chance? Our engineers are trying to reproduce the issue but haven’t been able to.

Hello!

I do have the pitch graph script installed, this one here: WaniKani Pitch Info
That is the only one I have on via ViolentMonkey, if that helps debugging this!

Also I did not have the Japanese language package installed on my Chrome browser when I checked, the latest Chrome update may have wiped all languages clean from my browsers “preferred languages” settings for some odd reason…Which was the main culprit from what I found when looking into this. Adding Japanese back immediately fixed it after a browser restart.

Thanks!

My theory is that on the Kanji Details pages the kanji are images and not text, but in the Review sessions and the Context section on Kanji Details pages they are text, thus the characters being displayed in the Chinese version. So not a bug, but I could be wrong on that.

No, I think they are text, not images – you can test by seeing if you can select and copy and paste them. I’m pretty sure WK only uses images for a few radicals where they couldn’t find a suitable unicode character (e.g. the “death star” radical is an image).

Ahhh yep, good point, and yes I can select/copy/paste the characters so that’s out, theory squashed lol
What a strange bug then, that it would only have this issues in review sessions…Its fixed now for meat least

Thanks! I’ll pass that on to our engineers.

What’s curious is that you had different versions in the reviews and subject pages, but that might have been due to the script.
