Yippee!
I don’t know why the email said I’d start burning stuff in level 10. I’m level 20 now!

Congrats!
We really should update that email to be more realistic…
Congrats! At least in my opinion, the satisfaction of burning an item never gets old.
The exact level you start burning items depends on how many lessons you do per day. If you do lots of lessons, you’ll be at a higher level by the time you get a chance to burn your first item.
With WaniKani’s SRS, it takes a little under 6 months for your first items to come back for their final review. Most people will probably be around level 10 at that point because they tend to level up every 20 to 30 days (except the first 2 levels, because they’re faster).
Haha, thank you!
what is the timeframe to burn an item after the “enlightened” stage?
Not sure if this is still 100% accurate or if they’ve fiddled with the timings since, but this page (WaniKani’s SRS Stages | WaniKani Knowledge) says:
Apprentice 1 → 4 hours → Apprentice 2
Apprentice 2 → 8 hours → Apprentice 3
Apprentice 3 → 1 day → Apprentice 4
Apprentice 4 → 2 days → Guru 1
Guru 1 → 1 week → Guru 2
Guru 2 → 2 weeks → Master
Master → 1 month → Enlightened
Enlightened → 4 months → Burned
So it’s roughly a 6 month cycle per item for perfect speedrunners
Congrats!
The feeling of seeing a flash of an old basic kanji well into the double digits level for the first time, immediately realizing it’s finally “burn time”, putting your phone on DND, closing all messaging apps, closing the curtains, making sure no one in your house will have anything to ask you in the next five minutes, putting the cat/dog outside your room, then finally, hands trembling over the keyboard, typing in, ever so slowly…

Haha wow you captured the feeling exactly ![]()
Congrats! I just started burning them on Level 19. I guess it’s more a matter of pace vs. level for when you start burning things given the info Pabbles posted.
Right now, it’s removing words that really are burned in my brain (mountain, river, etc.), but eventually I think I’ll have to hunt down the burned item study widget to avoid forgetting them.
I don’t think it’s worth doing dedicated study on burned items. Your immersion should be enough to keep the ones that matter in mind. You’ll inevitably forget some that don’t come up very often, but that’s OK.
congratulations! ![]()
…and then the system says “Sorry, we’re looking for the onyomi reading!”
Humblebrag. Ok man.
