JP subs for anime

Hello everyone :upside_down_face: , I think you might’ve heard this question many times ago, and if so pardon my question.

Recently I have decided to start watching anime with Japanese subtitles having passed my recent JLPT exam. I have been looking online for sites/methods of doing this for free, however I wasn’t sure of which solutions would suit me the best.
Are there any active methods of watching Anime wtih Japanese subtitles?

sidenote:

  • I currently live in Australia and something may be hardblocked for me, also don’t have access to a vpn
  • I’ve tried to download subtitles on kitsunekko but I’m not sure how to use it without the video, if you guys could explain it I would highly appreciate it

Thanks everyone for all the guidance, I hope good luck to everyone on their Japanese journey :hugs:

This is one of my enduring pains in the ass - it’s quite difficult last I checked (specifically I was after Pokemon with JPN subs which seems near impossible).

A lot of Netflix stuff, especially Netflix originals, I believe have JPN subs available even for Aussies. Try Dungeon Meshi or Komi-san in the anime realm; I think a decent amount of shows will have it too. (This is not free obviously but Netflix is decently popular to the point you might already have it)

JIMAKU has a lot of subs to download for anime, TV and Movie. It’s updated for recent content as well. Just download subs and use them along VLC if you have your content downloaded locally

I haven’t tried this myself, but I believe if you’re on windows there’s a way to use live captions in languages such as Japanese. I’m not sure how reliable how it much be and am sorry it’s not too helpful, but it might be something worth looking into further.

Just regarding the website and the subtitles, how do you attach these files along with their video counterparts and is there anyway to find these video counterparts

Just use Nyaa to download the video and open with VLC. Just drag and drop the subtitles once the video is playing

As Saezon mentioned, use jimaku for finding shows with subs. I recommend using the subs in combination with asbplayer, so you can use a hover dictionary to quickly check words you don’t know. It also lets you easily export sentences and audio to Anki.
