Did not see a thread so i thought i would open one up. I was looking to register for Sarajevo in summer but registrations don’t seem to be open. My second option was Vienna and they have already started registrations in January! I am a bit panicking and thinking about securing a spot in Vienna before it is too late
Hell yeah thanks for opening a thread.
What are you worried about in regards to the Sarajevo test? Should registration be already open at this time so you think they might not be offering them this summer?
Also what level do you wanna go for?
Btw I successfully secured a spot for N3 in Düsseldorf in July
I simply see no update on the bosnian site for the jlpt 2025 in july while in austria the applications have been running for a month or so already. Vienna is my backup for the case that i somehow don’t manage to signup for Sarajevo for whatever reason.
I’ll go for N2 even though i did N3 in december and failed. I gotta improve on reading a lot to make this happen. I am even building an ebook reader app with auto translations to improve haha
How long will the Düsseldorf applications stay open? That is like my option 3 at the moment lol
when is December registration opening up usually?
I still haven’t taken one yet, but I reckon I can nail minimum n4, and n3 if I work really hard and do tons of mock exams. Since December is the only date available.

In the US, it says the information about registration for the December 2025 test will be available around the end of July. I’m in a similar situation as you - I took a mock N4 exam just to see and it looks like I would pass (I didn’t review anything beforehand, and I also made sure to time myself). So I think I will just go for the N3 in December and study really hard in the next several months. I realize there’s a big difference between N4 and N3, but I want to go for the higher level just for the motivation, even if I don’t pass.
I definitely think it’s worth going for N3 if you’re willing to put the work in. I was similar last year, I passed N5 Dec 2023 and saw from practice tests that I was easily passing N4 so I decided to skip a level for Dec 2024. In the end I passed N3 with quite a decent score, but I don’t think I’d have regrets even if I’d failed - I definitely learned a lot more than I would have if I hadn’t decided to step things up. Good luck with your studies!
That’s awesome, I feel like I’m on the right track then! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. About what WK level were you at when you took the N3? I hope to be by at least level 30 or so before December. I’m only at level 2 right now, but I have been learning Japanese on and off for 4 years, so I already know all the kanji that have come up so far.
No worries! I think I was early 40s when I took the test but 30 should be fine - according to wkstats’ chart (wkstats), you would have covered almost 90% of N3 kanji by then. Especially if you’ve already got a couple of years of casual study under your belt, it’s very doable!
For me personally, I think the biggest struggle was grammar, and I found an app called Bunpro really helpful for that. I think it’s also good to start reading real Japanese material if you haven’t already - for N3, simple shoujo/shounen manga should probably be enough, or at least that’s mostly what I was reading. The reading section goes by very quickly so you need to make sure you can keep up or you’ll run out of time.
ETA: I also found listening quite hard and it was my weakest section, so make sure you listen to a lot of stuff too!
Düsseldorf is already fully booked for all levels.
It’s normal for many places to open applications a lot later than Germany. So I wouldn’t worry about Sarajevo not having any info up yet. As long as they’re listed with a summer exam on the official jlpt website you can count on them taking place
Meh, too bad. I guess I’ll wait for a while. I already have a tracker on their page watching for any changes. I’ll give them a bit more time and in case nothing happens in the next 2 weeks or so I’ll look for an alternative
I’m so glad you mentioned bunpro bc I was looking into it yesterday and was wondering if it would be helpful. I’ll definitely check it out. Thanks for all the tips, much appreciated!
Leiden (Netherlands) opens up their registration in a week:

Could you please put the links to the JLPT level threads in your first post?
The N1 Thread ・ The N2 Thread ・ The N3 Thread ・ The N4 Thread ・ The N5 Thread
I always find them very helpful for people that have specific questions for their level
+1
done
Thank you for the links, if anyone thinks i should add anything else feel free to tag me!
I’m planning on taking it in December. I’ve never taken any JLPT before but I have taken and beaten mock exams for N5 and N4.
I was planning on taking mock exams in July for both N3 and N2 to determine which one I was most likely to pass. That has been my plan since October of 2024. However, the nearest test site is 4 hours away and after talking with my husband, we might not go all the way to Houston just for a N3 exam.
So goal is N2 in December, unless the mock exams I take show I’m too far away from passing.
First time in I think 2 or 3 years I haven’t opened up a JLPT thread haha . Anyways thank you for opening one because although I don’t plan to take the JLPT for a bit might take in December, it’s nice to have some sought of motivation . Hope everyone’s motivated this year for some Japanese learning . 2025 sure sounds good ! Good luck everyone !!!
I’m thinking about taking N1 in July. I have very low chances:
- I barely passed N2 in July 2024
- I don’t do any JLPT-related studies at the moment
But I’m tempted to take the exam anyway and see how far away I can go with an immersion-only approach. On the other hand, it is a very stressful couple of hours, and I don’t understand why I am doing to myself.
I need to make the decision rather soon, last time the registration in Leiden was closed very fast
I signed up for JLPT N1 today. I don’t think, I will pass the test by any means.
Considering I skipped N5,N4 for N3 . I decided to skip N2 and go straight to N1.
RIP to my results.
Signed up for N2 in Leicester (UK) today! I don’t think I’ll pass but will definitely study harder with a deadline in mind
