Jlpt 2018! (Results are now online!)

Congratulations to everyone who passed the Summer test!

I had wanted to attempt N3 this December, but I stopped studying for a few months so I don’t think I’m gonna meet that goal this time around. I’m going to go for N4 instead!

This was my first time taking the JLPT and while I was pretty confident I had passed, I really didn’t expect to have done this well! Guess this means I am going for the N2 in December!:grin: Keep studying hard everyone!!

Congrats to your great score as well! I am going to sign up for N1 actually, just to test the waters, because I doubt I’m going to improve my score for N2 any time soon ^^
So, yeah, going to see how N1 will go in December.

Congrats, that’s an incredible score!!
Out of curiosity, how did you study and how advanced would you consider yourself?
I’ve been agonizing between N1 and N2 (I only have enough time before college apps to take one level) and maybe hearing about you would help me decide.

Thanks!

Hmm, I’m not great at self evaluation, but I guess I can give you an idea of my background and study habits and you can extrapolate from that whereabouts we are in comparison to each other?

I’ve been studying Japanese for a total of just over 3 and a half years. For the first two and a half I was at home in the UK, studying with WK, Genki 1 and 2 and later on the Try! series’ N2 book. For the first half of that time I was studying alone, and after that I started taking weekly lessons with a tutor, who walked me through the grammar and also helped me get some speaking practice. I took the N2 test a couple of times, failing once before passing last summer.

Between taking N2 and finding out my result I actually moved to Japan, and started studying from the Try! N1 book (I studied this cover to cover about 3 times) as well as keeping up with WK. I dip into online sources like Maggie Sensei etc occasionally, but those two things were my basis. After four months here I found myself a Japanese girlfriend, with whom although she can speak English, we generally conduct our relationship in Japanese. This obviously made a pretty big difference to my Japanese (although consistent study is of course important!)

As for study time per day, I have a pretty laid back approach, and most days I probably only study about an hour most days. However, I do occasionally get on a roll and will study just about every free moment I have, which can add up. The main thing is that there are hardly any days where I do nothing.

The other thing I feel made a big difference has been challenging myself to do things slightly outside my comfort zone. Be it calling the delivery company for a redelivery, to buying a car and insuring it, setting up a second bank account, and taking out a credit card, I did my best to do these things with the Japanese I had, and I felt that really reinforced the things that I’ve studied.

signed up for the n2 this december. just looking at it on my application kinda makes me nervous (looks like there’s only gonna be one test location in my prefecture too…). my scores, other than listening, on the n3 aren’t too promising tbh. but if i don’t challenge myself to do this, i don’t think i’ll improve. good luck to everyone else who’s taking it again next round!

I studied since January for the July test and I barely scraped a pass in N3.

I signed up for N4 and I’m excited! My kanji is closer to N3 (thanks to WK!) but everywhere else I’m lower level. Looking forward to taking my first school test in 5+ years. The test site is even at my old college (PSU in Oregon).

Also just signed up for N4 in December! It’s my first as well

注意: It’s possible JLPT website stores your password in plaintext… because they re-displayed it on my confirmation screen when I finished creating my account, and I’m pretty sure there was a hard page-reload in between the screens. So you might want to change your password to one that you don’t use for any other website/service…
