I sifted through a lot of fonts to find easy to read and also stroke correct like さ or き for example. I don’t really care for any of the Mincho fonts even though it’s the default on a lot of word processors.
The font used in the Genki books is really good. I was able to find a similar one, but Microsoft actually includes a fantastic Japanese font for readability. It called UD Digi Kyokasho. I made this my default Japanese font in Microsoft Word when I start typing Japanese. It’s built-in to Windows so nothing to download or install. Not sure if it’s installed on a Mac by default though. Below are some of my preferred fonts that I use with some screenshots.
UD Digi Kyokasho
Personally, I love this font. It’s my go to font for most of my Japanese typing. Easy to read, correct strokes, scales in size nicely, and looks great overall. UD Digi Kyokasho font family - Typography | Microsoft Learn
Biz UDP Gothic
This one is a nice block sans-serif style that is also one of the few maintains the correct stroke look. I consider it similar to the Helvetica/Arial font for English. I use this one frequently too. It’s available from Google and was created by Morisawa, Inc. BIZ UDPGothic - Google Fonts
Epson
Not exactly sure the name of this font. Some sites have it listed as Epson Kaisho too. Microsoft Word lists it as EPSON 教科書体M. I don’t remember where I downloaded this font though. I think it was part of a font pack.
Klee
A Reddit post listed a possible clone of the Genki book font called Klee. It’s an open-source font on GitHub. The font actually supports multiple languages and tries to emulate a clean handwritten style. GitHub - fontworks-fonts/Klee
Several companies offer the font for download including Adobe and Google. Klee One - Google Fonts
Update (2-19-2023):
FC教科書体
I was able to locate a copy of the fonts used in most grade school dictionaries. Similar to the Epson one above, but there some differences that probably make this font better since the connecting strokes are a bit smoother. Note: the sample below is in bold. The lines are a lot thinner in the regular mode.

I’m very particular about fonts I use in my documents and graphic designs, so I’m probably more OCD about it than most people. Anyway, I hope this helps anyone looking for some fonts.
