Known content warnings: zombies, so I expect blood, gore and general yuckiness
Things go badly for a hack director and film crew shooting a low budget zombie movie in an abandoned WWII Japanese facility, when they are attacked by real zombies.
I first heard of this movie when I watched It’s a Summer Film at the online Japanese Film Festival 2022 and got this reply:
which intrigued me. Humour and zombies, what can go wrong?
The movie is available on the Internet Archive.
Funny that you nominate that now; literally last night a friend was recommending it to me / asking if I had seen it (I have!). There are parts I’m not a huge fan of the presentation of personally but overall I find the structure of this movie very clever. And as the title implies, while it’s not ALL one take for the whole film, it does do a 37 minute segment in one take which is super impressive. Definitely worth a watch for all the stuff it does well.
Wow, first of all thank you @Daisoujou for creating this club. I don’t know why that thought never crossed my mind… I am actually a huge movies and seires buff; and lately I became interested in Japanese movies; for me it started with the Ringu movies, which I wanted to see after seeing the American remake (that I actually really enjoyed); and from there I got into some J-Horror, with my all time favorite being Audition. Additinally I stumbled upon the movies of Takeshi Kitano (you know, the Takeshis Castle guy - he actually does some pretty serious and deep movies with main focus on Yakuza). But I am open to anything interesting.
As this was already a topic in this thread - I am rather old school and actually get physical copies of the movies on those shiny discs. In my experience this is the best way to get to Japanese movies in Europe, as there are hardly any streaming services, and if you find something, it usually misses the Japanese audio. I am located in Germany and there are a few labels here that carry Japanese movies, but the best way in Europe is to get them via UK (which was pretty uncomplicated before Brexit - now it is unfortunately getting a bit more complicated/expensive
). But if anyone’s still interested: Arrow Video, Eureka! and Criterion are great resources for Japanese films that come with great quality, additional bonus material, and always with original audio (no dubbing!); the only downside is the lack of Japanese subtitles - but getting them from UK ensures English subtitles (which e.g. is not true for German releases in 90% of the time
They only include German subtitles - but if you don’t need them, then the best resources for Japanese movies are Capelight and Plaion (formally known as Koch Media)). I know, today it’s rather niche to still get physical media so for most of you this is probably not something you’d like to go for. But if there is anybody out there, who would - then here are some starting points ![]()
Btw. if you are interested in my collection: I’ve compiled a list of all Japanese movies I own in my introduction thread; if you want to browse through that list of titles - and if anything fancies you, let me know and I can write up a movie proposal for that title for the next voting. I will also try to write something up on a couple of movies I really enjoyed (I’ll probably start with Audition; but that’s actually a horror movie and not for the faint-hearthed; even though this is not obvious the first ~half of the movie – but it’s a great movie non the less; from Takeshi Miike who also did the currently chosen movie The Happiness of the Katakuris).
That being said, I am also really looking forward to some new Japanese movies I haven’t heard of yet, and some nice movie discussions ![]()
Welcome! Happy to have you. I looked through your thread a bit and what really caught my eye is you have the Taisho Trilogy! I do too, and that’s such an uncommon thing for people to know about. I love that kind of surrealism and absolutely adored it. Probably a little niche for a club like this, but who knows. Just wanted to share my appreciation for those films and Suzuki’s work in general.
It’s time to vote again, already! 3 votes per person seemed to work fine, so let’s do that again. With a one week poll, we’ll be ready for our next pick as soon as it’s decided. How many weeks before I totally forget to do this? Probably fewer than you think!
JFF+ is streaming 12 independent Japanese films for free, available in any region apart from Japan.
They usually keep the films online for a couple of months or so, but I couldn’t find an end date at first glance. I also haven’t looked at them carefully yet, but hopefully there will be a few of interest in the lineup.
Thank you for the info! I searched around on the site for a bit and discovered that the „About“ page mentions „from August to October“ without further details ![]()
Would you like to integrate the movies into the film club, or should we set up a separate thread for them (like we did some time ago)?
Literally just came here to post that.
Note that aside from the “not in Japan”, there’s also a parenthetical comment saying that some films may not be available in all regions.
5pm JST August 1st (i.e. it’s already started a few hours ago), until October 31st - the specific time is not specified, but I presume it’s also 5pm. Though my memory is suggesting it might usually be 7pm.
That’s up to @Daisoujou mainly, as the organizer of this club.
But I’d like to point out that this isn’t the usual film festival, like we had last February, but a selection of smaller, independent films. Still worth discussing, or course ![]()
Appreciate you posting here, but if you want to give this its own thread, it might be worth it to get some extra eyes on it!
Also wow they have Hanagatami, been meaning to watch that. Obayashi is so good so I definitely recommend people check that one out.
Good point! I also think that the limited availability is not such a good fit for a club with proposals and votes.
@omk3 would you like to set up a thread for it (as you found it in the first place)? If not, then I’m happy to do it.
I’m happy for you to do it. I’d probably get around to it tomorrow at the earliest, and you have more experience in such threads anyway. ![]()
Not sure about the “experience” part though
but I made a thread for it anyways:
And I even watched one of the films already! ![]()
Thought we were gonna tie, but Tokyo Story narrowly wins it! Tampopo has to be the winner soon given how close it keeps getting. Really excited to rewatch this one, love it.
Hey remember when I said my memory is bad and this would slip my mind? This week’s poll is running slightly shorter than the others cause it’s a little late
. 3 votes as usual.
Hope people enjoy Tokyo Story! I’ll probably nominate another in a bit for next round.
Tampopo is here! タンポポ / Tampopo 🍜 (Japanese Film Club)
Feels like a good time for me to add another nomination. This time, a movie I haven’t seen yet!
Length: 1h59m
(Rough) Genre: Surrealism / “fantasy”?

A collection of magical tales based upon the actual dreams of director Akira Kurosawa.
Y’all ever heard of Akira Kurosawa? Probably Japan’s most famous director, best known for his many samurai films, this one is instead something entirely different! It should theoretically be nicer listening practice for learners since it was made in 1990 and isn’t full of samurai-speak, heh. The idea of a collection of dreams as a movie appeals a lot to me for that magical sort of vibe, and in the images I’ve seen from this movie, it really feels like he captures that. They all have such vivid, beautiful colors. I’m really hoping to check it out ![]()
@Daisoujou Ah, this is why I never heard of this thread before, it’s in the book clubs. ^^;
if i had at least been in the listening category, that, would have put my antenna on. I have watched tampopo before and it’s a great movie. No doubt. I’ll try to rewatch it and comment for reals + add this thread to the additional media thread. Though I think it would make sense to move this thread outside of the Book Clubs for clarity and ease of finding it, in a category that buries threads each week with an avalanche of new threads.
I suggest the Listening category, but it’s really up to you.
Just some thoughts.
Appreciate the addition to the list!
I brought it up briefly when making the original thread and no one disagreed at the time at least – in my opinion, while not literally a “book,” I think it fits the spirit of the book club section far more? This category seems to have taken that name because we mostly only have established clubs for reading, but this is operating on the same structure and model. I mean, every two weeks, this club is also pumping out those same threads that would clog other categories the same way.
I don’t feel THAT strongly about wherever it gets placed, that’s just how I rationalize it and why I defaulted to here. If more people agree with you I’m fine with moving these.
The Masterlist of other media content was made later. As an attempt by me to just bring attention to the “non book/reading” content of Japanese culture that so many of use consume and also might want “book club” format discussion clubs for. And I had already made many “anime clubs” that also needed their own category, or at least: a way to be found.
you just didn’t have a place to place it. And perhaps didn’t notice the new master list, where you can put your own threads into the wiki.
But, I do suggest for all, non-book and reading media to be put somewhere else, including Visual Novels!
Put them in a game category instead. Plain and simple, as many has voice acting and are doing dual duty. not all of them are, “reading only”
I also suggest posting in the main thread about the upcoming watch clubs to just bring more focus to these things!
