How to unlock lessons and other things

Hi,

I just started using Wanikani yesterday. I learned 26 radicals and I complete the Quizz yesterday and I did it today. After completing this, how can I get access to new lesson?

My second question is:
How putting names to different radicals will help me to learn how to read Kamji? I get it when the radical is actually a kanji in itself (i.e: the radical woman). But what about the others?

Finally, I am not sure I get all the mnemonics (probably due to cultural difference or lack of english skills on my side) but I guess I get the idea. A bit of time will tell if this method is for me.

Hey! First off, make sure you read the FAQ and the User Guide (I’ll get links in a second)

When you learn a new lesson, you will need to review it several more times before it gets to “guru” level. The countdown to your next review is on your dashboard. Radicals that get to Guru level unlock new Kanji, kanji that get to guru level unlock new vocab, and getting to a new level unlocks even more of all 3.

Learning radicals helps you in two ways: number one it helps you recognize new kanji more easily, and helps you see the differences in really similar kanji. It can also help to put the radicals in your mnemonic story, so that you can remember it more easily when you see the kanji.

If you don’t like the existing name or mnemonic, you are able to write your own, in any language you feel comfortable with. This is a bit of a pain to do for everything on the site, but it’s great to use if you notice you keep getting one wrong, and you can use something different to help you remember better.

The first few hours/days are notorious for being hard to wait through, but you can use that time to read the forums or look ahead at what’s coming. Honestly, I was really impressed with how much I learned even in those first few days, people get “hooked” at that point.

Patience, radicals are meant to help form temporary mnemonics or stories about the kanji/vocab which in turn helps with learning the actual words.

What are you going to remember more, a story about a woman, or a story about a drunkard?
