How to express "for" in Japanese

I would like to express “Good day for exercise”, but don’t know how to combine いい日 and 運動.

I’m unsure too  but maybe something like 運動のため[の/が/は]いい日 ? :person_shrugging:

Well, that’s my first guess, google translate suggests 運動するには良い日 with には meaning for the purpose of:

I hope this helps a little.

Cross-posting your question in the following thread is likely to get you more qualified answers than I can provide though :upside_down_face:

I’m also quite unsure  My first thought was に取って, but I’m not sure if that can be used in such a situation. I recommend the Short Grammar Questions thread linked above.

(I’m quite sure that my assumption is wrong btw)

I asked deepl and got 運動日和 for “Good day for exercise” and 今日は運動日和 for “Today is a good day for exercise.”

So they’re going with just “exercise weather” when my first instinct would be to use ため

I am also unsure and mostly chiming in to test my own practice.

^ all three answers so far have this feeling😅

I’ve forwarded the question to my iTalki tutor, I’ll relay her answer when she gets back to me (but it’s the weekend so I kind of hope she’s relaxing instead of answering her students…)

currently I’m leaning towards のためには, but it’s probably wrong/not natural sounding

is good.
means ‘it’s a good day for exercise (but not for other purpose)’ because of the topic marker 「は」.

However, we say more commonly:
運動するのによい日です。
運動によい日です。

In the same way, you can say:
運動するのによい場所(ばしょ)です。
It’s a good place to do exercise.
It’s a good place for exercise.

So, there we have it:)

How about this?

I think you can just leave the ための out altogether

Is の is okay here too instead of に? That was my first guess

An alternative I prefer is 運動で いい日, as I knew it had to do with the order.

So, that would mean “Exercise for the good day.”

Exercise weather…it all makes sense now. I was saying that to myself earlier, but then said, that cant be right.

Ok guys. At my monthly Japanese meetup (where Japanese speakers drive up to two hours to meet up) I asked the question and we came up with the following:

いいお天気なので運動をしますか

We put the reason before the action.
