Happiness Volume 1 (Absolute Beginner Book Club)

I just finished page 16. So I am pretty far behind and it is really slow and painful going.
I thinn I need to spend more time on grammar.

Thanks to everyone, I’m actually able to follow along in this book. I finished WK, but I hadn’t been reading, and it’s not easy at all! I thought I’d try a Beginner Book Club, but that was way too hard. This absolute beginner’s club is doable, tho. 3 weeks had already gone by before I found this club, so I’ve had to catch up. Also, it’s not easy for me to see the kanji and the furigana, as they’re very small, and my eyes aren’t so great. I’ve been using the digital version, mainly with my browser. I ordered the print version, but it’ll be a few more weeks 'til it arrives. Hopefully, the little characters will be readable (with reading glasses:).

Have you checked out the Older Learners - #245 by hakulus thread? There you will find many recommendations for this exact problem. From using the built in operating system Zoom to external magnifying glasses and using the Vocab sheet for help and much much more. Can recommend to browse it.

Also welcome.

And if you do feel bored, instead of reading ahead, feel free to try again with the beginner book club. The old threads will still be monitored by the readers so you will get help at any time. The book just started.

Same, those furigana are hard to see! Shipping is crazy expensive to where I live though so I’m not buying the physical version.

So I went to my shop and found my Optivisor, which is for working on really small stuff. I think it was $60-70 when I bought it and it’s $50 now but there’s a knock off for $25 on Amazon! Guess what? PERFECT for reading manga as an old person! Those furigana are clear as a bell with this on, LOL! Here’s the knock off: https://www.amazon.com/Headband-Magnifier-Head-Mounted-Binocular-Magnification-1-5X/dp/B07M7H3P95

On to chapter 3! Week 5 thread is up:

It is a crime punishable by death to add stuff into the vocab sheet without checking to see if it’s there already on another tab? I just find the google sheets search so painful to use…

No but you will be kicked out of the bookclubs and never be allowed to participate again /s.

I’m no authority on this club but if it was me and I’m unsure I would opt to just add it. In the worst case it was added in an earlier chapter but since you forgot it someone else might have also forgotten. Especially since this is ABBC I wouldn’t sweat the small stuff. It helps to keep the vocab sheet a bit easier to browse through if only new words are added but since we are reading a manga at a relatively slow pace it should be easy to browse through no matter what.

That is my opinion at least

I like that opinion therefore it’s the correct one… that’s how it works online isn’t it?

To add to everything you said, as a beginner I have a slight preference to see the words repeat because either:

  1. I already know the word in which case I just ignore it (minimal cost).
  2. I don’t know the word in which case it is very helpful to have it there so I don’t have to check jisho. Especially if there’s 5 different meanings on jisho and I’m not sure which one.

Already there’s many words that I know that are in the vocab list and that’s good because other readers don’t know them and they should be there for those who need it! We don’t know which words other readers are going to struggle with and since it’s ABBC more words is better.

I’m not yet at a point where I am using the mangas to study/memorize new words. So if there’s a word I don’t know and it repeats from one chapter to another maybe I still won’t know it. I’m not sure how others are using the sheets but I don’t have the habit of checking all of the old chapter sheets to see if the word I want is on an older sheet.

Also I’ll take this moment to thank everyone who has been helping out with the vocab lists. I don’t feel confident enough yet to start reading ahead and adding words to it, thank you to those who are more advanced for the assistance!

In other bookclub’s vocab sheets there would be repeats between sheets, it was only within sheets that duplicates mattered.

I found this super helpful as it meant I could print each week’s sheet in isolation and read books away from a computer.

TL;DR no, not a problem at all.

I’ll be joining this ABBC. I’m currently reading graded readers for 1st year students and I’m craving for something with more story and intrigue. I hope to catch up and read the last weeks with everyone else :raised_hands:

Accidentally read the whole ćƒćƒ”ćƒć‚¹ Pt.1 Manga in one go. Ups…

But despite that: The story is great, the characters too and even though I can’t understand every single thing I still have a good grasp of what is happening thanks to my over 1 year study of Japanese and the help of very well drawn images. This is the first manga I really enjoy!

So despite being overwhelmingly busy from work and still recovering from jet lag I randomly bought the 3 free volumes on Bookwalker and have got to the end of the first week’s reading. My first manga so going a bit slowly. But I’m going to try to catch up before you reach the end! Though I will keep focusing on å¤œć‚«ćƒ•ć‚§ as I’m on schedule with that.

Edit: um 30 minutes later I appear to have finished week 2’s reading. Though I do need to go over a couple of bits.

Good morning/ evening everyone fellow japanese learners and professors,

I have a question. I’d like to join the book club and buy the paper edition of this comic.
I’m a bit late, I know…
Does anyone know if and where I can buy it in the UE or UK with UE shipping? I looked for something on amazon but couldnt find anything

Hi!
I order nearly everything (too much in comparison of what i can understand) on verasia.
Happiness is not actually on the site but there is an email on the contact page where you can ask for it. Surely a little longer but it can be an option if don’t find it somewhere else.
And if the book club continue on the next volumes you will have time to catch up.
