Genki Study Buddies - 「皆さんはGenkiを勉強しています」

Whoops, I never noticed this tag!

Well… that just makes it easier to prioritize something important when it DOES come up. Like meeting a certain deadline for something? Or… making money to be able to eat food this month? I dunno, I’m not a creative so I only have sweeping stereotypes to go off of ( ̄_ ̄ i)

If I have to go to work, I just go to work. XD

EDIT: That’s not a decision, I have to do it.

So I’ve just sat down with Genki, trying to power-cram/review all 10 chapters that I’ve already read… I’ve already finished the 1st one (Greetings are second nature if you’ve watched anime with subs for as long as I have) in a couple of minutes. Hoping to cover up to the end of Lesson 5 or 6 today… Will likely pop back and edit this post after each lesson or each couple of lessons… take a bit of a forum break.

@Caracal I’m starting that run to get back on the grammar train, you’d better get running to keep up with me! ~<3

EDIT: Missed a few extra special numbers last time through lesson 2. さんびゃく、ろっぴゃく、はっぴゃく、さんぜん、はっせん。 Only 三百 is a WK vocab, so it was the only exception I was aware of. 5-15 minute break time, then lesson 3! EDIT 2: Phew, 3 is done after some reviews. Another break, then Lesson 4. Will probably stop at 5 tonight, methinks. Even though 3 was mainly easy… I don’t know why it feels dense today. EDIT 3: Done chapter 4. Skimmed this one mainly, too, didn’t read almost any of the in-depth stuff. \_(o.o )_/ EDIT 4: Finished Lesson 5. Yup, done for today. Hoping adjective conjugations sink in a little more. 6-10 for tomorrow and/or Saturday.

Haha me, run?

…maybe. Though for me it’s more like I’m being dragged along as I try to read NO.6, rather than steadily chugging through proper textbooks as you are so wisely doing.

I shall continue to look to you as a shining good example that I may or may not choose to follow.

Oooh, shiny.

Awww, Just some quick speed-reading review is all I’m really doing. (But also re-reading the opening dialogues.) I read way less of the Lesson 2 explanations this time around (and none for Lesson 1, it was more like " “X は Y です” - Know that! Next thing!” super super fast, barely glancing at stuff.)

I was really happy to learn the potential (are able to do) form from Nihongonomori last night… and since have been using it speaking aloud to myself. 。。。から、火事に歩ける! (last line of a song I started writing.) Don’t think it’s 100% accurate to what I want to say, but it still works, and it fits the melody and sounds nice. XD

I’m (properly) starting Genki lesson 5 tomorrow but I’m reading through all the grammar bits to get ready for book club. I’m only two months into Japanese at all but I’m a very dedicated (if not super hesitant to try it out on the wild) learner. If anyone wants to study any of the discussions or really anything at all up to lessons 4 or (soon) 5, hit me up!

I just re-read through (and mostly skimmed) Lessons 1-4… do you have any questions for me? I’m reading Lesson 5 again myself. I have it starred (in my mind) as one that I had to go back and re-read anyway… because while I basically get the idea of how to use adjectives, and that they conjugate similar to verbs, I don’t actually know said conjugations by heart. I suspect it’ll be one that I reference again and again for a while… ^^;

I understand all I’ve done and read for now! The only times I screw up is with word order and, sometimes, particles, but it’s just a matter of practice. Other than that I’ve been writing down kanji a lot and trying not to read the furigana (it’s really hard to not look!).

It is!! It’s really frustrating. It’s even harder for me to not look at romaji.

(Just finished Lesson 5 speed-review. XD Hopefully those adjective conjugations will sink in a little bit more…)

Tomorrow or Saturday I should hopefully speed review Lessons 6-10.

I’m still messing up some particles from time to time - especially when a few of them have so many uses. I like to omit them (like natives do) when I can. I tend to do so on HelloTalk.

それは何ですか。Tell me more!

It’s an app for mobile phones (definitely on Android, probably also on iOS but I don’t know I’m an Android user). It’s like a cross between Facebook and Lang-8 (if you’re familiar with that website?)… You can pick your hobbies and what language you natively speak, and what language you’re trying to learn… and then you’ll see posts from people speaking in that language you’re trying to learn, and can post your own, and you correct each other. The correction features are pretty great! I’ve had nothing but good experiences with it, even though I rarely use it. Search the forums for more discussion about it, I know I’ve talked at length about it in at least two other threads - one of them being The Longest WaniKani Thread Ever!. : D

Can confirm, HelloTalk is available on iPhone. I have always been afraid to use it (talk to people using my voice, wut???), but seeing you mention it reminded me to re-download it, now that I know enough Japanese to apologize constantly for being terrible at it, so thanks for that reminder.

I’ll probably continue lurking around here, seeing as I’m considering buying Genki but still reluctant.

I’ve never done any of the voice stuff.

… Wait, have you never done any real grammar study yet? Genki is the basic stuff, if you have already.

Besides reading through Tae Kim a while ago, nothing structured. I look things up when needed. I’ve been suuuuper casual about it. So I have a decent grasp of the more common verb conjugations, various particles, levels of politeness, etc., but my knowledge is fairly spotty, since it depends on what I’ve looked up or been exposed to enough to learn.

So depending how basic Genki is, maybe I should look into other textbooks? Good to know.

I second the fact that I’ve never done voice as well. Just chatting via text. Super helpful.

Yeah, or maybe skip to Genki II, at the very least. I don’t think I experienced anything new until Lesson 4 or 5 myself [EDIT: and even those chapters I knew a few points from], and that was merely from 15+ years of watching anime with Japanese subtitles that I could get by. So… yeah, pretty basic, if you have other grammar experience. Tae Kim might/probably covers all of Genki (I + II), possibly in a different order. You might want to merely skim Jomteon’s notes that he made (click the link up in my OP to his old Genki Sprint), and that’ll tell you if you know all those points already. ^^

I downloaded it on Android. Tried to start conversations with two people and got some sweet sweet radio silence. We’ll see how it goes. XD

I always (and still) have trouble with conjugating to short forms because I find it particularly confusing. I spent ages on this chapter! I made a conjugation table that I find helps me. Hopefully you find it helpful!

Please let me know if there are any mistakes

Post some moments! (Like status updates on Facebook.) Mine have been really simple… One where I said “I’m watching Stranger Things, and I’m scared for the first time…” Another (my first I think?) where I said something like “It’s so hard to get up in the morning”.

That’s an excellent idea!
