Hello all! o/ While buying F&B-related stuff, I happened to find this! Itâs a booklet called ăłăłă ăCOMICăă©ăŒă«ăč!!, and it was released in 2006. Itâs got a manga-ized scene of a small section of vol 2, and I thought youâd all enjoy seeing it! Apologies in advance for my crappy photos; Iâd have to debind the book to get really clean pictures, and the publisher has apparently never heard of a gutter, so here we are.
I soooo wanna have that comic!!! thank you for sharing!
Makes you imagine what a manga version of F&B could be like.
I wonder what the deep history explanations would look like in a manga
For those interested in importing it, I did find listings on Yahoo Japan Auctions and Mercari. Please keep in mind you will need a proxy for both of these sites.
Next week the story of this book will become almost real for me as Iâm planning to go to La Rochelle to check out the location! The harbour, and the inn, and where they went through the narrow passage between the island and the land
Will send pictures of course.
That sounds amazing! Iâm looking forward to those pictures!!!
Iâm sure youâll have a great time! ^>^
Thanks!
I hope so too, although the weather forecast is like
(planning to arrive on Monday)
Well, letâs hope it wonât be THAT badâŠ
Oooh, I canât wait to see them! Hope you have fun!
I havenât forgotten that I promised to send pictures from my visit to La Rochelle
First of all, itâs a beautiful little old city, unfortunately nowadays surrounded by lots of industrial complexes⊠thatâs the price you pay for being easily accessible by ship, I guess.
Anyways, here are my impressions:
In Chapter 3, Jeoffrey and Kaito arrive at La Rochelle and hear a bell. Jeoffrey explains that this bell is in a tower which is part of the castle walls.
Unfortunately, those castle walls were destroyed in 1628, after (the catholic) Louis XIII had laid a devastating siege to La Rochelle and finally took it. To prevent a rebellion from ever happening in La Rochelle again, all fortifications were destroyed except for the harbour towers that you can see in the photo. So Jeoffrey and Kaito must have seen these two towers as well.
View from the towers out to the sea
(donât worry, thatâs not a graveyard in the foreground - I guess it is supposed to break the waves at high tide)
The ferry boat
Jeoffrey and Kaito are picked up by a ferry boat and brought to the quai. In the harbour there was some information on display, in particular this oil picture which (I guess) shows ferry boats like the one that they used:
The quai
This must be the place where they hopped into the water in order to escape Vicente.
I do hope for them that it was high tide, as the same location looks like this at low tide:
The street
They were pointed to their lodging by a fishmonger; they must have been at the quai when they talked to him. He told them to walk up the road until the end, and the last house would be it.
In the previous picture you can see that there are only two streets that lead away from the quai: one in the foreground (where the red umbrellas are) and one in the background, where the tower with the gate is. I think they might have mentioned the gate, therefore I decided to try my luck with the first street.
It looks like this:
and a bit further up:
This is the last house at the end of the road:
I tried to find a date written on any of the houses in the area, but I had no luck. Personally I donât think this house is old enough, but who knows?
Now Iâm fully aware that Iâm talking about fictional characters here, but it was great fun walking around and trying to imagine them having been there
I love this so much! You did an amazing job with these @NicoleIsEnough! Thank you so much for letting us take part of your trip to La Rochelle.
Seeing how narrow that harbour opening between the towers is, makes me appreciate even more how hard it might be to navigate a huge ship through wind!
I loved the detective work you did for this volume. Iâd like to think that your theories here are the right ones, though as you say, it doesnât look old enough that building at the end of the alley.
Still, what an amazing day you must have had. It looks lovely in La Rochelle!
omg These pictures are amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing, @NicoleIsEnough! It really feels like Iâm there; I can picture all the scenes in my head as I look at your pictures. This is so cool! Makes me wish I could put together a âtravel guideâ of sorts for people to look through as they read the books, really let the history sink into their bones.
As @ekg said, that harbour opening is hella narrow. What am amazing chase scene that wouldâve been, with Vicenteâs ship chasing the Gloria out of the city.
Itâs amazing to me how shallow the quay is there; I love the high tide vs. low tide pictures you have here.
The detective work you did is simply awesome; thank you again so much for sharing these!
So this is slightly unrelated, but in the same vein: thereâs a class of Sherlock Holmes fan who read and treat the original stories as works of fact and not fiction and attempt to resolve inconsistencies in Watsonâs narratives as if he were a real biographer. I first stumbled upon them when I received a set of The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes, since thatâs how the author annotated the stories (along with real historical facts and such). Your note just reminded me of that, nothing else to add.
Glad yâall like the pictures
By the way I forgot to add one picture:
The passage
⊠between the mainland and the Ile de Ré:
Not really sure how well you can imagine this⊠The picture is taken from Ile de RĂ©, looking towards the mainland. In the foreground you can see an angler, for comparison of sizes. The structures across the strait are part of the industrial harbour and probably artificial, so they would not have been there back in the day, is my take. To the right there is the Bay of Biscay and also La Rochelleâs old harbour.
I mean, it doesnât look super impressively narrow but with Jeoffreyâs sailing maneouver of sticking close to the coast, this must have been quite the spectacle, Iâm sure.
Here is that scenery on Google Maps:
I took the picture roughly from where the grey marker is, looking across the strait to the industrial harbour. The old harbour of La Rochelle is to the very right of the pic, itâs the small diamond-shaped basin.
That would mean our next stint is London, then?
Oh yeah, I think I heard about that! Super interesting stuff. I used to work in London for two years (mostly remotely, but I was in the office quite regularly) and I sometimes thought about going to Baker Street and seeing whether I can find the house, but I was working and staying in the eastern parts of the City (Moorgate and later Aldgate) so going to Baker Street would have required some planning and intent, and somehow I never managed. But I often roamed the small passages inside the large building blocks in the old City, which I loved!
Iâll see you guys there. o7 Iâm actually planning a trip to Paris with my sister next year, so if Kaito and co. end up there anytime soon Iâll have an excuse to go hunt for pictures there.
Ooooh, please let me know in advance once you fixed your plans, maybe I can arrange for us to meet there! (only if you like of course)
Man, Iâd love a IRL Flesh & Blood-gathering for our book club! One can dream canât you! ^>^
