Once you have collected the Fang of the Earth.

Side-content

  • サロニアの地下の迷路

This is the dungeon I told you to avoid last week. You can do it immediately at the start of the week or leave it for later.

New side-content will become available on the flying continent. I’m going to ignore it for now, we already have a busy week ahead of us!

週刊完璧主義通信

In the 3D version you have a unique chance to obtain the spear Gungnir from the boss in サロニアの地下の迷路. Here’s what the wiki says:

The spear can be stolen by a Thief with a Job level of 71 or higher. The weapon also has a 0.3% chance of being dropped, allowing for a small chance to obtain two Gungnirs.

サロニアの地下の迷路 [side content]

I recommend doing two passes in this dungeon (especially if you don’t use version that autosaves all the time). The boss at the end is significantly harder than the dungeon, so it makes sense to first go and loot every chest, then do a 2nd dive just for the boss.

You may still find the boss very difficult at this point and the reward for beating him is not all that great, so don’t insist too much if it’s frustrating, you can always return later.

There’s a fake wall on the right hand side of the area with the stairs leading to the boss:

It leads to some chests with valuable treasures.

古代遺跡

I hope that Une enjoyed our little trip but it’s time to go to our next objective: the Ancient Ruins. They are located in a valley West of Saronia, in the complex mountain/river system.

This is half a dungeon and half a “village” since it contains shops!

There are a bunch of undead enemies in this dungeon, so prepare accordingly. There will also be a bunch of enemies who replicate. Don’t underestimate those, they can easily prove deadly.

Attacking replicating enemies with normal weapons will cause them to replicate, while spells wont. The Ancient Sword that you could have found in the optional underwater dungeon last week and can buy in this dungeon can prevent them from splitting when it inflects the まひ status effect.

Fleeing is a valid strategy. I took a thief and とんずら’d as soon as one of those splitting enemies showed up. Unfortunately some of these encounters seem impossible to flee… This dungeon is quite hard on the Famicom, it took me 5 tries before I survived all the way down, but they seem to have nerfed the duplicating enemies on the Pixel Remaster.

The game will give us a way to deal with splitting enemies soon but only after this dungeon, which is a strange design decision.

Anyway, reach the bottom of the ruins and you’ll be able to leave this wretched place for good!

ファルガバード

This is technically optional content, but not doing it will make the next dungeon so much harder that it would be silly to skip it.

With our new ship we can now cross some mountains by jumping over them. We can only cross narrow one-tile ranges. That will let us reach new land, including Falgabard in the mountains South-West of Salonia.

This village is home of to the edgelords 魔剣士. They sell gear for them and you can find some related loot in the cave at the back of the village. There’s also a secret path that leads to the waterfall, and of course you’ll find a secret area behind it:

You can also explore the river downstream and find more hidden treasure on the small island:

So what’s the big deal with those demon sword knights anyway? Well you see, the dark swords that these knights can use have the interesting property of not allowing the replicating enemies from splitting. That’s why we need them, because the next dungeon (and also the cave to the back of the village) is full of them.

Also this job can use low level white magic, including Cure and Cura, which is pretty nice. NOTE: only true on Famicom apparently. But the other versions have special attacks instead.

Anyway, once you’re geared up you can explore the cave to the back of the town. It’s absolutely trivial in the Pixel Remaster because you can see all the paths clearly:

But that’s not how it was originally, the paths are supposed to remain invisible, meaning that you just have to blindly find your way, only having those small “holes” to give you an idea or where the path could be:

It’s trial-and-error all the way.

Anyway, this small dungeon is just a warmup, return to the Invincible and head for the Cave of Darkness.

暗黒の洞窟

In order to reach the cave you have to go North-East of Amuru (the village you woke up in after the unflooding) and find a valley leading to a mountainous area. There, you have to use the Invincible to play hopscotch and find a path to the center of the region, where the Cave of Darkness entrance is located.

The cave itself is effectively a bigger version of the dungeon in Falgabard. Use your 魔剣士 and mages to push through until you collect the Fang of the Earth. Remember that you can rest and fill up on consumables in the Invincible. I recommend stocking up on High potions.

On Famicom it’s really painful to navigate without a guide since so many paths are invisible, I just cheated by looking at the maps here: https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Cave_of_Shadows#Gallery

Peak FF3 gameplay.

Note that you won’t automatically be teleported back out of the dungeon after you collect the Fang. I recommend making sure you always have at least one ラッコの頭 in your inventory. You can buy them on the Invincible.

Miscellaneous

募集・魔剣士

The 魔剣士 is called “dark knight” in the English localization, which seems like a confusing choice to me. For one thing, they can use low-level white magic (much like the Knight of FF1) so they’re technically more similar to paladins. There’s also the fact that there was a prominent Dark Knight in FF2, which was ダークナイト in Japanese.

But the main problem for me here is that FF3 also features 闇の戦士 as part of the plot, which have nothing to do with 魔剣士, but in English they become “Warrior of Darkness” and “Dark Knight” respectively, which I find absurd.

Apparently in other FF games the 魔剣士 is translated as Warmage.

As mentioned above, the 魔剣士 can use low-level (1-3) white magic in the Famicom version. That’s mainly useful for Cure and Cura. Apparently they lose this in the 3D version, not sure about the PR. In those versions they do gain a special attack that didn’t exist in the original, however.

The main advantage of 魔剣士 over the knight is that they can use dark blades, which don’t trigger the replication effect of some enemies.

魔剣士

I don’t remember for sure, and I’m not going to look it up, but I think Celes from FFVI might be a 魔剣士. At least, I’m pretty sure her Runic ability has 魔剣 in it. I think other job games like FFV and FF Tactics have a Magic Fencer / Mystic Knight, which is either 魔剣士 or 魔法剣士.
(edit: Not the original Tactics, I think it’s in one of the sequels).

So in general, it’s supposed to be a magical swordsman.

The only reason I can think of to call them a Dark Knight is the lore behind them (they’re constantly talking about eliminating your fear and embracing darkness), and the weird armor that looks pretty Dark-Knight-ish (which is shared by Cecil in FF4). Future 魔剣士 and 魔法剣士 absolutely do not wear this dark knight armor.

古代遺跡 on the Famicom version (at least from level 5 onwards) is an absolute slog of battles from which you are unable to escape

Optional Dungeon

Gave Odin 3 tries and there’s just no way that’s happening. Back-to-back Zantetsukens can just blow my party away. A quick Google says he has 7K HP on Famicom, 20K in the PR, and 31K in 3D. Gonna have to come back at a higher level.

Optional Dungeon

Yeah same here, unless there’s some trick to it that I’m not understanding I just can’t keep up with the damage (currently early 30s in levels). I’ve tried different tactics: testing if 斬鉄剣 always comes at fixed turns and have everyone defend against it (it doesn’t), trying to have the Knight shield the other party members (sometimes he barely takes damage, sometimes he eats 800 damage to the face and dies), the suicidal all dragoon charge (they actually do pretty well if they manage to all jump before Odin but his speed varies wildly and sooner or later they get cut down one after the other before they can jump again.).
Maybe I’ll experiment with other classes. At least the dungeon before is really short so it doesn’t take much to come back and try again.
I do pretty fine in terms of actually hurting him but I just can’t keep up with the damage output. Seems to be a similar situation with Whatshisface the dragon dude, except he has boatloads more HP.

The difference between 分裂 and 増殖

I was actually pretty stoked to see the エッタ enemies again because they are a great way to farm exp and money while not being too threatening, at least in the Pixel Remaster.
They didn’t use it in my first encounter with them, but I noticed they actually have two different attacks where they spawn another of them, 分裂 and the much rarer 増殖.
So am I correct in assuming that 分裂 (split) creates a new enemy with half/less HP than the original, while 増殖 creates a true new エッタat full HP? I think I did notice some of them dying in a single hit while others requiring two.

分裂や増殖

I assumed that 分裂 was when they reacted to being attacked with normal weapons and 増殖 was spontaneous.

I’m not sure if it’s accurate and, even if it is, I’m not sure what it means for the HP situation.

Optional boss

Sorry if it’s still too hard at this point, there are so many parameters to consider (version being played, party level, job selection, strategy, luck…)

Remember that there is absolutely no rush, you can turn there at any time until the final dungeon.

Optional boss

I was able to outrace Odin with a Knight/Thief/Viking spamming physical attacks and a White Mage spamming the stronger Cure spells on the full party (and Raise as needed). Maybe I just got lucky, but after a handful of turns of using Zantetsuken, Odin mostly swapped over to single target attacks (which did enough damage to one shot most of my party, for the record). This is on the Famicom, and from some of the other messages, seems to be some major differences on how this fight goes based on which version of the game you are playing.

the sword that cuts iron

I did find the fight a bit easier on Famicom vs. Pixel Remaster but I don’t know how much of that was better preparation and luck…

Week 9

While it wasn’t particularly difficult in the Pixel Remaster, I can see why the cave of darkness can become an absolute slog to go through. It’s really long and having to go through the cave blind on the Famicon would have really tested my patience.
The Pixel Remaster made it just a bit long with nothing much going for it. The game is at least generous enough to shower you with free gear for at least 2 Dark Knights (I’m way too used to the English name to call them anything else), so I momentarily swapped my Knight and Ranger to it.
It did take me an embarrassing amount of time to realize the enemies split in response to your physical attacks,I just thought it was an ability they were using their turn for lol
Once I switched my Monk to powering up and oneshotting an enemy so he wouldn’t trigger the reaction, things went a lot smoother.

Anyone else also get ambushed by the 忍者 behind the waterfall? I had just come out of the cave and was not expecting it, was a short but intense battle.

I do like how they are trying to give every job their little “hometown” full of other people that specialize in the same things, even if not every class is directly part of the plot. It makes them feel less like special things that only we can do because we’re the special protagonists and more part of the world. Little details like the departed Dark Knight in the first floor of the cave entrusting you his sword before fading are also nice.
I also like the fainted sprite of the Dark Knight being the two pieces of armour laying empty on the ground, almost as if it’s implying that there’s no more body inside once you wear the armour.

I have a soft spot for Dark Knights as little as we see them in the series, I like the whole concept of “using the power of darkness to do good” . Very Berserk - coded (which let’s face it, probably inspired at least their outfit if not their entire vibes)

I find it quite amusing that we go to these super ancient ruins to find the super duper ancient airship… and it still can’t fly high enough to go over mountains.
Somehow.
Airship engineers in the FF3 world need to step up their game.

Also, as I was reaching the cave, I got attacked by three chimeras while flying and was quite amused when they got shot by the ship’s cannons at the start of battle.

reply

I like it a lot but as I mentioned in a previous week, I also wish that the way you were taught the jobs in the first place linked to that instead of being dumped on you by a piece of rock.

Why not learn the 魔剣士 job in Falgabard for instance? It’s not like you can use it before then anyway, given that you have no gear.

It’s a bit bizarre to go to these places and have people study hard to prove their worth as knights or summoners or whatever and then you just press a button in the menu and you’re as good as any of them.

The Invincible is a bit lame as a vehicle compared to the airships in FF1 and 2 but all the amenities are really cool, I thought.

Reminds me of the airship in FF6, which I thought was the only one that you could free fly and run around inside of.

Odin

I started running into him with an all black knight team, which wasn’t serious but I had been trying to train up the job levels.

Goddamn why does everyone have to start at lvl 1? Ugh, awful.

Anyway, they were annihilated.

I brought a Paladin and Dragoon, because I knew I needed the highest defense characters, plus WHM and dark knight. Dark Knight spent most of the fight dead, because they are highly limited in armor and the defense values are lacking. My second attempt actually had a Viking instead of Paladin, but Viking’s damage output is so pathetic that I don’t even see how this class is viable. On the bright side he takes double digit damage from Odin, but that’s also what he deals back.

Paladin, on the other hand, has high defense while also dealing 1k+ damage per hit sometimes. White mage keeps everyone topped up (items are NOT enough to heal through this). Constant all party heals. Dragoon, always be jumping - decent damage and he tends to avoid more damage than he avoids heals, though it’s pretty luck-based.

I used at least a third of my supply of phoenix tails, every single cast of Curada and Cura and barely scraped through. I think I was about lvl 32, but job levels are what matters. Pal 45, WHM 65, DRG 15, BLK 30. Also, I didn’t fight him until after this week’s content, and a little of next week’s, so I could level up a bit more.

Ninja

I happened to have an all black belt team (just to try training up HP levels a bit) when that old ninja dude ambushed me in Falgabard. I thought that guy was an Omega-level secret boss by how badly he destroyed me.

Turns out, armor is important, and black belt ain’t got it. A standard team with armored people in the front and unarmored in the back whupped him handily.

Week 9 in 3D

Off to the first dungeon we go! Let’s find the airship.

Uh, I think Unei is kinda cracked. Can I keep her?

A bit more about the fangs.

Interesting extra bits of convo.

<3 I love the Invincible on the 3D version! I feel like I’m finally home.

The SQ Chips album made an insane remix of the flight song. Listen to even just the first ten seconds, it’s insane.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=j3KsDLfuVc0&pp=ygUvU1EgQ2hpcHM6ICJHbyBhYm92ZSB0aGUgQ2xvdWRzIX5UaGUgSW52aW5jaWJsZSI%3D

How annoying can an FF remix be?

Y e s

So I quickly darted into the optinal cave. I looted it and left, it wasn’t too bad. I didn’t bother with switching to a Dark Knight, my team is plently capable. Also, welcome back to the Kraken enemy sprite lol.

Walking on a spine like that is pretty hardcore.

I forgot to take a photo of Hecatoncheir, I actually wasn’t expecting to win! My guide says minimim is level 39 while I was only around level 36. My team is pretty great right now. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

We got the thing! Now just one last thing to do…

ODDINNNNN

He wiped me 3 or 4 times. I got really lucky on my win attempt as he didn’t use Zantetsuken at all and I was able to DPS him down fast.

Welcome to the team!

Shops

Aww, it looks like in the 3D version the shops inside the ship aren’t vending machines anymore?
I found that absolutely hilarious.
“The ancients build this super incredible ship, you can even buy stuff in it. With literal vending machines!”

Please spoiler that, I think it’s a cool surprise that you can do that for people who play the game for the first time (at least it was for me…)

穴だらけの山

I couldn’t figure out how to describe this landmark in my walkthrough. I guess “holey mountains” is a way to go.

BTW Zande did nothing wrong. “A human life” as a gift? I’d be pissed too.

In the original it’s just a wooden bridge on water. Not quite as moody…

Week 9

More like weak 9 amirite. No but seriously the 魔剣士 starts out so weak, it’s ridiculous. It only felt decent to use at the end of the cave of darkness, once it had some actual armour to use. I had my monk charging and then pouncing on enemies to ensure it took them out in one hit, while geomancer doesn’t trigger 分裂 so was able to use that to supplement damage

Getting to walk around on the new airship and use facilities on it is cool, but damn it can only fly over the thinnest gaps in the mountains. Lame. And it can’t even go underwater like our other one. Also want to sidenote that whoever decided to create that maze of mountain passes deserved to be demoted for it. It’s incredibly dull and tedious

I did attempt Odin but I felt I really needed attackers with better magic defence. My physical attackers were taking tons of damage from 斬鉄剣 while the casters were faring better

On a similar note, the boss in the cave of darkness was a similar story exfept I did actually beat it. But it basically melted my 空手家 and was stuck in a loop of trying to revive and heal it back up before it died again

Week 9 whining

I think this is the week where I have to finally accept that this isn’t gonna be “the good Famicom FF”. They’re just all kinda bad. What a slog. The maps in the PR at least trivialize the idiotic invisible corridor gimmick, but my guys can still just randomly get one-shot if the monsters are feeling mean. I think I did the dungeon in three delves, teleporting back to the ship whenever my White Mage ran out of Raise casts. I still blew through about half my Phoenix Downs.

And seriously, what’s up with yet another annoyingly hamstrung airship? The shops and inn are cool (and I’m sure the fat Chocobo is a godsend for you masochists on Famicom) but we lost the diving ability we only just gained, and the mountain crossing is so weird and slow. Getting an airship in FF is meant to be the ultimate freedom, not whatever this is.

Protect is pretty good in this game (I miss the whole arsenal of buffs from FF2 though)

Note that I think that you can also cast it from the Defender sword if your white mage is busy. I always forget that you can cast from items in these games… Actually it might be the last one where this is a thing?
