I’ve become a big fan of Aimer lately. I love love love her lyric writing!
Even though I speak French I always pronounce her name as A-mur for some reason. It’s really quite bad.

Tatsuro Yamashita, the king of citypop (and husband of Mariya Takeuchi).
Specifically these two songs are the best (in my opinion): LOVE SPACE and 僕の中の少年
Of LOVE SPACE there’s also this insanely good live recording at the Pit Inn (a very famous locale for jazz that used to be in Roppongi and now is in Shinjuku) with none others than Sakamoto Ryūichi at the keyboard.
Just gonna copy-paste some of my recommendations from the other Japanese music thread:
I personally really love 人間椅子 (metal band) even though they sing in a mix of a very local dialect and archaic Japanese.
Also Vaundy and Mega Shinnosuke for some newer things. On the more city pop side of things, you can’t go wrong with 大貫 妙子 , 広瀬 香美 , or 間宮貴子 . They are super-comfy and I own most of their CDs.
. . .
Here’s some of my favorite songs for each of them:
NINGEN ISU / The Caterpillar(人間椅子 / 芋虫) | Official Art Track
Mega Shinnosuke - 桃源郷とタクシー (Official Music Video)
Vaundy - 怪獣の花唄
Taeko Ohnuki - Sargasso Sea
広瀬香美 / ストロボ
真夜中のジョーク - 間宮貴子(Takako Mamiya)

[Campfire] Favorite Japanese Bands/Singers?
Yay another music thread, I think I’ve gone through all the older ones.
Susumu Hirasawa - パレード
I find this a little while ago from youtube’s recommendations (judging by the amount of English comments, many others did too) and loved it. I usually find such algorithms completely useless for finding content I even remotely care about, but man are they ever good for J-music. And it’s often stuff I just wouldn’t ever expect or don’t have the skills to find on my own! It’s my understand that that’s how City Pop made a big come back in the west, just as another example.
So far, my favourite Japanese songs come from the movie “Your name” - I’m still at a beginner level, so I basically have no idea what he’s singing about, but the music is emotional enough to make me cry anyway^^
Especially the songs “Sparkle” and “Nandemonaiya” I find the most beautiful to listen to
I’m also attempting to play “Sparkle” on the piano, but I’m afraid I’ll finish the 60 Wanikani levels before I can play that song
Eesh, I could really go on and on about this. Here’s a small, small sample.
I really love the band Yonige and their latest album is so so good, and I think a contender for one of the best of the year.
Maison Book Girl is consistently amazing and interesting. It almost seems unfair to lump them in with other idol groups.
Teng Gang Starr is a really great rap group, wish they had more than one album, though Nakamura Minami has a pretty good solo career going:
And then there’s the new group PIGGS. Maybe you are familiar with BiS (if not they have a really interesting career worth looking into), this is Pour Lui’s newest creation. Honestly, I went into it with low expectations. But I found myself really liking their whole album.
I don’t listen to alot (yeah my bad)
But i really liked yume to hazakura🌸
Here is a comprehensive Japanese music list, curated by a Dutch Japanese music lover:
It has almost 700 songs!
I mostly listen to Radwimps, One OK Rock, but also Aimer, Wanima, Sekai no Owari. Here is the Wanima song that popped into my head:
The bad thing is, I hardly ever remember the titles of the songs (or names of artists), because I listen to spotify playlists, so I took me a while to find this one, and listening to it now I’m still not sure this is the one I had in mind, but it’s a good one nonetheless!
Update: it was this one: the sentence I remember only shows up near the end
Wow thanks for the link!
recently i particularly love 和楽器バンド. i listen to their best of collection album quite a lot!
also this 18 minute song from a ghost in the shell OST is a regular in my playlist:
I like to think listening to Japanese music is a decent? way of seeing words used in action in a casual context which is easy to replicate cause you can sing along
Artists:
Yonezu Kenshi
Yorushika
E ve
Kikuo (it’s vocaloid but still really unique)
At the moment my favourite song is 春ひさぎ by yorushika (great title )
I love kikuo!!! What songs are your favorites at the moment?
I usually find you can get YouTube to recommend new stuff if you put some work in first. Just start on something you like, and click through the recommended videos on anything that catches your eye. Doesn’t matter if you like it or not, it’ll tell youtube that you’re looking for Japanese music and it’ll start finding new stuff for you.
At risk of being the most stereotypical weeb in history, I am quite obsessed with Wowaka.
I’ll list some bands I like too so I don’t look too boring:
My Dead Girlfriend
Soutaiseiriron
Judy And Mary
Midori (when I’m feeling really spicy)
Midori is fucking awesome.
