音楽のついて話しましょう

Hello, there! So, I really like japanese culture, and I’m trying to dive deeper into it, not just the language itself. For example, I’ve been reading a lot of mangas, watching animes and reading some japanese book writers, like Haruki Murakami. Most of all, i’ve been listening to a lot of japanese bands, and I would like to hear you about what those bands mean to japanese culture, their cultural relevance, advices on other bands and so on.
Recently i’ve been listening to Asian Kung Fu Generation, polkadot stingray, くるり、キノコ帝国 and 市子青葉.

Only Japanese band and music I know anything about are Radwimps and One OK Rock. Other than them I also listen to Aimer, but I had to look her up in my songlist

These are good bands  AKFG is a bit slow for me, but I’ve loved 遥か彼方 ever since my Naruto teenage days.
I mostly get Japanese music from anime, but here’s what I can recommend.

  • FLOW - hands down my favorite Japanese band. GO!!, Sign, Hero ~ 希望の歌, Re:member, and Cha-ha Hed Cha-la if you like DBZ
  • GRANRODEO - The other self, Can Do, Rimfire, etc. If you like Flow, you’re gonna like them
  • ROTTENGRAFFTY - 70cm四方の窓辺 is one of my favorite songs, period. Just listen to everything, they’re great. I bit more ‘wild’ than the previous two bands, I don’t know how else to describe it
  • 影山 ヒロノブ/JAM PROJECT - if you like epic ‘heroic’ songs, he’s your guy. Again, Cha-ha Hed Cha-la, We Got Power, 光のwill power, the hero
  • UVERWORLD - for a more electronic take on rock. D-technolife is so amazing I could cry, other than that – odd future, 激動

And I could give you a lot more single songs I like, but these are one of the greatest bands I can recommend  Can’t say much about their influence on the culture though, haven’t read about that yet.

I don’t often go out seeking new groups to listen to, so a lot of what I listen to is fairly old. :upside_down_face: But, I do have two artists I absolutely adore that are still active! (I think…)

  • 椎名林檎 (Shiina Ringo) - A “Shinjuku-style writer-performer”. She has an amazing, distinctive voice and a crazy cool look. A lot of her stuff has a bit of a jazzy feel, but her stuff covers many genres. She also sings in a variety of languages. Some good songs of hers are “本能” (more rock), “りんごのうた” (more “jazz-taste sound”…kind of, I guess?), and “ポルターガイスト” (more whimsical). My favorite is “La salle de bain”, a very fantastical song that sounds like magic.
  • パスピエ (Passepied) - Electro-pop? (Wiki says Pop/rock, new wave, avant pop) group that is inspired by the words “Impressionist” and isn’t just about the music, but also the culture. A lot of high energy songs, but also many many mellow songs. My favorite songs are “夕焼けは命の海” (very mellow, like slow magic), “メーデー” (more electronic and pop-y), and “誰?” (mellow and very very catchy).

 Now that I’m done going on about my favorites, I need to check out other artists being mentioned here!! :musical_note:

I just looked these guys up because, I mean, polkadot stingray?? And one of the first videos I find has けたくま, my favorite weird character!!! It’s meant to be!
