[False Alarm] - Firefox Update seems to kill Tampermonkey 😱

Just a quick heads-up for you Firefox users out there:

I ran the newest Firefox update (it updated to 85.0.2, on MacOS) and now Tampermonkey stopped working, i.e. I cannot run userscripts.

Somebody reported this to Tampermonkey already (the person is using totally different scripts on a different page, so this seems to be a real Tampermonkey issue):

If your scripts are important to you, you might want to hold off on updating Firefox until there is more information.

Yeah, Firefox updates tend to do that.

Every few updates, I have an absolute nightmare of a time trying to find the right workaround to get the tabs below the address bar again.

Interesting! I switched to Firefox last year only (early summer or something) so I don’t have such a history of suffering - so far I never encountered any issues. Sad to hear :pensive:

Thanks for the info! I didn’t know there was an update, and I’m not sure if it auto-updates, but hopefully it doesn’t.

I was asked by Firefox for what it’s worth… so maybe you can avoid the catastrophy :v:

The update does not seem to cause any trouble on Windows and Linux, so I guess it’s just a problem specific to Firefox on Mac. I hope they fix it for you soon.

Maybe give Violentmonkey a go. Seems to still be working for me on Mac

Ah, thanks for the suggestion! I was mentally preparing to dig up my old Chrome again, but I‘ll look into Violentmonkey first

I’m running Firefox 85.0.2 on MacOS 10.15.5 with no problem - my userscripts still work.

Indeed. I’ve had no problems with TamperMonkey. :eyes:

If you restart Firefox or close and re-open it for whatever reason, then normally it will auto-update - but as long as Firefox stays open, it won’t update!

Then I guess it updated and I’m not having issues
so far ^^ . I just actually checked and it indeed has the latest version. I’m on Windows though.

I panicked a few days ago too, when mine updated to 85.0.1 (Linux) and Tampermonkey decided not to do anything useful. Tried various fixes, nothing seemed to stick.

Gave up, frustrated, did my reviews on Flaming Durtles, went to sleep, and in the morning - tadaa! - everything worked again.

@kathryna910 @rikaiwisdom @kernfel You can turn off automatic updates to Firefox if they’re causing you trouble. Just see this section in the settings:

Thanks for the reports everybody! Seems like it‘s just a quirk on my machine. Will try some more rebooting and stuff in the hope that it will eventually resolve itself again :woman_shrugging:

Thanks! I leave auto-update on just because I know if I didn’t I would never update because I have a bad habit of never turning my computer off  (until my poor computer starts breaking things to make me restart and update…)

Also works for me on Firefox 85.0.2 on macOS 10.14.6

This morning the issue resolved itself

My computer developed some network issues overnight, and when I managed to resolve them (mainly by rebooting my WLAN router, it seems) the scripts started working again…

Interestingly, at some point I realized that Tampermonkey only stopped working on the WK page, but it worked fine on the forums, so maybe that networking issue caused one of the scripts to act up which then blocked Tampermonkey?

One can only guess :woman_shrugging:
