I finally got serious about learning Japanese after a long break, so I want to do a lot more reading & immersion from now on. I’d like to do two things:
Read manga and start mining sentences/vocab to an Anki deck. For that I’d need the manga text to be clickable, and wondering if anyone encountered an app like that. It would also be great, if there was a quick way to create Anki flashcard with it (preferably with image of manga).
Watch anime with japanese subtitles (or both japanese and english), so that I can both listen & read at the same time, and pause to mine sentences/vocab to an Anki deck. I’d love if text was clickable and easy to lookup definitions. Also a big thing would be an easy way to export mined sentence to Anki flashcard, preferably with an image.
Is anyone using an app/website like this? Quick add to flashcards is a big thing I’m looking for. I know copy pasting to make a card is just 15-30 seconds, but when you account for the fact I’ll have to mine 5-10k cards, that time does quickly add up.
For foreign language movies, you might try the Language Reactor chrome extension. I’ve just started using it, so I can’t give it a thorough recommendation. I wanted to be able to see both Japanese and English subtitles at the same time on Netflix movies and dramas, which it does well. It also seems to be able to create a full transcript of a whole show from the subtitles, and extract vocabulary lists (sorted by word difficulty), and create flashcards.
For printed materials, I use the dictionary app called “Nihongo” to do Japanese optical character recognition. It also creates lists and flashcards from raw materials.
I’m not a big Anki user any longer, so I haven’t played much with those programs’ export capabilities. The SRS built-in to Nihongo is so convenient that I didn’t see much added benefit from the overhead of using Anki.
For #1, you can try using Mokuro in the browser, then use Yomitan to automagically make Anki flashcards. Unfortunately there is no way to attach an image of the manga besides for adding it manually. I do not have any good advice on how to achieve #2 since I do not watch anime, but using MPV with this script seems as though it may be suitable.
Migaku is paid and if you want you can always subsitute with free alternatives
But Migaku seems the most appropriate to your needs and more. They have an app now which helps with immersion on mobile (I think).
For more information check the website out. You can see the interactive feature you mentioned on the website.
Good luck to your journey
