I’m noticing that in my reviews there is a noticeable delay after me typing in my keystrokes and then seeing the hiragana appear or me typing in the keystrokes, seeing the hiragana appear, pressing the Return key, and. delay for WaniKani to accept my answer and give me the GREEN or RED reply. It’s only been in the last day or two. It’s just in the Reviews mode. If I open up Google Docs and start typing as fast as I can (about 50 wpm) or even in this dialog box, there is zero delay between keystrokes and what I see on the screen. Anyone else getting the same?
Yes. Comes and goes throughout any review session. Length of delay varies.
i’ve had some issues with double check userscript and the lightning mode ever since the update came out recently… maybe its something related to that? Haven’t had any delays when I am not running the scripts though…
Good news. I was just slogging through my Reviews and it was really delaying its response after me hitting the keystrokes and hitting enter. At about 9:26 PM (Pacific Standard Time), I go the “oh, snap” screen of death from WK. It reloaded and then since then for the past 10 minutes everything back to normal! I’m done with my reviews for today, so I’ll check back in tomorrow.
Ugh, there’s some lagginess that’s back when inputting during reviews. Not as bad as before, but anywhere between 500 milliseconds and a full second. Before could be up to seven seconds, so today is still tolerable, but just wanted to let the powers that be there’s still an issue.
Hey SFJerry! Could you please send us an email at hello@wanikani.com with this info?:
- The description of the issue
- Your browser and OS (and version)
- Any scripts that you use (and if it works better when they are turned off)

Hi Nick. Sure! It’s a bit late here in San Francisco, but I will send it tomorrow (Thursday). Best, Jerry
Description of issue: 500 millisecond to 5 second lag time after inputting answer during Reviews.
Browser and OS: This computer is using macOS 10.15. Version 127.0.6533.119 (Official Build) (x86_64). To get future Google Chrome updates, I’ll need macOS 11 or later. My Mac is 2013 MacBook Pro so I’m due to get a new laptop.
Scripts Used: I use the Self Study Script. Also: Additional Filters, Heatmap, Item Inspector.
I hope this helps! Thanks Nick! Best, Jerry
Hey Jerry! This sounds like it could very well be a software issue. Older versions of operating systems and browsers tend not to work to well with WaniKani. This might be the reason that you are experiencing these lag issues in reviews! Are you able to have success on other devices, with more recently updated operating systems?

Hey @SFJerry! Just wanted to add that one of our engineers is pretty convinced that this may also be a script issue. Can you try using WaniKani without any scripts of browser add-ons and see if your performance improves?

Hi Nick. I did try using WK in Safari and no issues. I then went back to Chrome and no issues, as well, at the moment. I accidentally “x’d” out of having that “congratulations, you’re level 47” header at the top of the page. It would be nice to get that back and I don’t see how to do that. I think maybe my “Self Study Script” is turned off as I don’t see it now. Maybe I did that yesterday. So maybe that was a fix. Give me some more Review sessions. If you can tell me how to turn that Level 47 (in nihongo) note back on, that would be great. If you can tell me where to turn off and on scripts, that would be good. In the meantime, all working good in both Safari and Chrome. I still need to get a new Macbook soon and that should make this lagging issue go away. Thanks for all your help so far.
Just to contribute I’m pretty sure this is due to the extension Wanikani heatmap.
Without it enabled input lag is negligible but enabled it freezes a second or two between each review.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to restore the banner after you x it out. Sorry about that!
I do think the issue involves scripts. You can turn them off by accessing whichever browser add-on you used to install the script. If it’s Tampermonkey, you should be able to access it and turn off individual scripts or all of them at once. Let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you, Nick, for your help. I turned off the scripts and I haven’t had any issues for several days. I’ll probably get a new Macbook over the next month or so, so I should be fine now and then with a new laptop, all should be good.
Wonderful! Happy studying!
