I have to be very strong to not buy every book I want, when it is on Sale or has a coin back. I constantly feel This fear of Missing Out, that the books won’t be on Sale again or that the next Sale isn’t as good as the current one. At the Same time I Hope that the next Sale is a better one (Combination of Sale and coinback).
Do you have Rules for yourself, so you don’t buy too many books at once?
Like “Only buying books who have coin Back and are one Sale”
If it’s Bookwalker that’s getting you, remember that Bookwalker sales are very frequent. Odds are there will be another similar sale to whatever is tempting you within a month or two.
I have a monthly budget for spending money on Japanese stuff so I just check how much money I have left in my ‘Japanese stuff’ category and if I don’t have money left, I don’t buy anything.
I also recommend bookmarking the book you want and saving it in a folder, then coming back to it in a week or two and deciding if you actually want it. Usually once you’ve gotten over the initial urge to buy, it’s easier to make a decision.
You are my people hahaha. I already have a mountain of books in various languages and topics. My rule now is I can only buy 1 book for every 3 books I finish reading. I also try to only buy books that I think I will likely reread, otherwise try to rent from the library when possible. I’m also a physical bookworm so this is a serious problem for me.
Thanks for the Tip. I already bookmarked them. And I was able to not buy e.g. Kaguyasama yet, because I saw that it has very few Furigana (If at all). I wouldn’t be able to read it yet.
Big agree on waiting for buying books since there are frequent sales and coinback campaigns. I have a big tsundoku pile, but recently I haven’t bought new books unless I’m about to read them. 読書タイムナウって感じ
There’s also the checkmark function. Checkmark a book by clicking the button on the lower right and then it gets saved to a list. There you can see when it shows up for current sale/coinback campaigns.
Yeah, the checklist is a good tool. If you look at your checklist frequently, you can also see how often stuff is on sale (some things in my checklist reliably go on sale every month it feels like).
I have 30+ novels on Bookwalker that I haven’t read yet because I have a gigantic wishlist and they keep having sales! (And the most recent splurge was on a series on sale while also qualifying for the 50% coinback campaign).
It’s a problem. I have enough books for years - at least until I get even faster at reading.
(I also have manga, but most of them were 100% free ones from the bookwalker freebies thread so it’s ok if I don’t read them anytime soon)
I heard someone say that you should only buy things you would be happy to pay full price for. This seemed like good advice. Are you buying only for the sale? If so, maybe you could pass on it.
No. I’m Just stingy because I haven’t had a stable Job until recently. I only Had several “befristete Arbeitsstellen” (a Job where you are hired for e.g. 1 year and than you have to go. And they will hire another Person for 1 year or the staffmember who was pregnant is coming Back and they didn’t need me anymore.).
This has a really heavy Impact on your mental state. I Always Put what I want on a wishlist and try to wait until it’s on Sale.
I hate spending Money for other people or Things Iike flowers even more. I mean 60 € for a few dead flowers? I really don’t understand that.
I don’t mean that you should pay full price for anything, just that you should only buy things that you would be willing to pay full price for. Of course if taken to the logical conclusion, that could mean that you never buy anything at all, depending on your state of mind.
But in any case, I’m sorry about the financial stuff, that’s one of the most stressful situations to be in! I hope things get more stable soon!
