Hey guys! Didn’t see a thread for this so I figured I’d start one myself. Share your favorite music old Japanese music here, whether it’s idols, bands, or anything in between! I’ll start with the iconic Onyanko Club. おニャン子クラブ 恋はくえすちょん - YouTube
I just found The Blue Hearts recently searching through some Japanese music threads on another website. Really enjoying them. It’s kind of been difficult for me to find 80s-90s Japanese punk rock bands.
Definitely second the Blue Hearts! They’ve been one of my favorite bands for years, their music has so much variety
Check out jpop80ss.blogspot.com, while they have mostly idols they have a lot of rock bands too!
Jun Togawa is one of my all time favorites! Anything she’s touched is great, from her solo work to all she did with YAPOOS. She’s really punk rock in her own way lol
these are a few of my favorites:
Why didn’t I make this thread myself?!?
Well, I’ll start with my favorite:
(All of these are city pop)
Miki Matsubara - Stay With Me
Tatsuro Yamashita - Sparkle
Tatsuro Yamashita - Music Book
Yurie Kokubu - Just a Joke
Some of you know this song from well known movie Kill Bill directed by Quentin Tarantino. The movie Lady Snowblood, in which the leading actress is Meiko Kaji, was an inspiration for Quentin Tarantino in the creation of Kill Bill. This old song from Lady Snowblood was used in Kill Bill. If you are into old japanese movies, i strongly encourage you to watch those, in which Meiko played leading actress.
Meiko Kaji - Flower of Carnage - Shura No Hana - 1973
Meiko Kaji / Zenkyoko Shu /album - songs from this album are used in the movies, in which she played.

OMG don’t even get me started on her, she’s my all time favorite!!!
IKR, love her to death!!! she’s so cool ;o;
Has anyone here shared 4:00am by Taeko Onuki yet? Pretty great little jazz track if you ask me!
Sweet, nice to know that the city pop era got some representation here!
Anyway, I don’t know if this is cheating, since it’s late, late 90s, but I unashamedly love two of the bestselling artists that debuted at the end of that era, 椎名林檎 (Sheena Ringo) and 宇多田ヒカル (Utada HIkaru).
Sheena Ringo - Marunouchi Sadistic
Utada Hikaru - First Love
You might like The Roosters ザ・ルースターズ if you’re not already familiar with them.
About that Kazemachi Roman album, I stumbled across a making of documentary a while back, if anyone’s interested.
And here’s Toshiki Kadomatsu’s On The City Shore
anyway, I don’t think anyone’s posted anything from the more Jazz Fusiony side of this period yet, so without much ado…
Probably my favourite Casiopea song… Asayake
My favourite T-Square album
My introduction to Japanese jazz (apart from a funny story about a very short evening in a jazz bar in Fukuoka):
