The Summer Solstice 24-hour Readathon

:pretzel: :carousel_horse:

:sun: Sunday, the 21st of June :sun:

It’s the two-year anniversary of the very first Wanikani community readathon! :birthday_cake: Our little readathon can now use at least two words together and eat with a spoon. :baby: We’ll celebrate the longest day of the year (or shortest :kangaroo:) with the most wonderful and stupendous activity of all… reading lots of Japanese!! Novels, manga, visual novels, news articles, blogs, video games- anything goes, as long as it’s in Japanese!

How it works: On the weekend of Sunday the 21st, read as much in Japanese as you can in a 24-hour period! While reading, keep track of your progress in a way that makes sense for your materials: pages or characters, along with the time spent reading them – when you’re finished, report your final numbers in the community “results” reply below and we’ll tally our collective amount together to see what we were able to accomplish.

There is no expectation for the amount you read or the difficulty of the material, and anyone is welcome to join regardless of Japanese level!

:roller_skate: Participation:

Set your goals, make a post if you’d like to
Read during your 24 hours
Add your results to the community tally

Set your goals: Are there any books you’d like to start/complete? How many pages do you think you’ll read before time is up? You can challenge yourself to go above and beyond, or simply try to squeeze in a few pages to boost the community numbers. There is a list of participants and links below, add yours if you make a post, too!

Choose your Readathon time: Will you be reading day-of? Need to defer to the day before or after? Throughout your 24-hour period, post updates with your progress. Let us know when you finish something, reach a milestone, or simply can’t read another word without your brain melting. (Snack photos always welcome! :chocolate_bar:)

Add your results: When your 24 hours come to a close, show off your final numbers! Compare them to your goals: did you exceed your expectations, or were you too ambitious with your plans? Did you finish anything that was mind-blowingly good? Did you catch up to a book club you were behind in?

Add your final numbers to the “Results” post in the next reply below. It will be opened to the community at the start of the event – don’t forget to add your time and pages before it closes again!

FAQ

Do I need to read for 24 full hours?

No, this challenge takes place over a 24-hour period, but you are only expected to read for the span of time that you’re able during that period. Some of us may make it a personal challenge to read for as long within those 24 hours as is humanly possible, but even 1 hour of reading is an admirable feat!

Can I combine my time from the day before and after, too?

No, the addition of multiple days allows flexibility for those who want to participate but would otherwise be inconvenienced by a strict date. Please do not add reading stats that did not occur during your 24-hour reading period.

Do the books need to be in Japanese?

Yes, this challenge is meant to encourage us to read more Japanese. If you read other language books, please do not count them in the overall tally.

Am I required to post updates?

No, updates are simply a fun way for us to create a community event, but they are not necessary for participation.

After each Readathon event, we like to add the results together in different ways to see how our reading has grown! The primary leaderboard is the average of everyone’s efforts: average time, pages, and characters. Using averages benefits readathons that have fewer participants and therefore lower raw numbers, as well as celebrates our community’s efforts as one group accomplishment. We are reading together, after all! The previous average then becomes one of many goals to beat in our next event :chart_increasing:

While the event is taking place, we also try to beat the raw numbers from previous readathons. For example, if we finished 1000 pages together in the last event, can we get 1001 next time? If we totaled 10 hours before, can we make it to 10 hours and 1 minute? Of course, it’s important to remember that the numbers are just an added bonus, and the real fun is had by spending time with the community! But, that being said… can we beat these numbers? :eyes:

FAQ for Adding Results

I don’t know the exact length of time I read. What do I add?

No problem! Rounding your time to a general amount is still helpful for calculating our final results. It can be hard to measure reading time if you’re often tumbling down unrelated rabbit holes during look-ups. But if you stay aware of those moments and stop the clock for impromptu research/breaks, a general number is very helpful!

I didn’t read anything with “character counts” – should I try to calculate it?

No, please stick to the page numbers printed in the book you’re reading, or provided by the e-reader/browser reader you use. If you’re reading something like an online article, which has no page numbers and infinite scroll, you can copy and paste the text into a counter website like this one to get a character count.

One of my books has page numbers and the other book has a character count. How do I post my results?

Add both results! It’s perfectly fine to have mixed counts, as long as each source (book/VN/etc) is only counted one time. Do not use calculations to turn the character counts into page numbers, or vice-versa. This skews the results in the direction of one result type. A diversity of results showcases the many ways we read!

I’m bad at math! I think I messed up the total on the bottom / I don’t want to mess with any of the numbers

Your gracious leader (me, soggyboy) will add up the results at the end of the event to make sure the math is right. You can also ping me during the event if you would like me to add your results for you!

Pages vs. Characters

Pages - Individual pages of a book or manga
Characters - Individual Japanese symbols (はるみ is composed of 3 characters)

Pages are the most common method of counting the amount read. They often show up in the corners like below:

If I spent 30 minutes reading this manga, I would add 00:30:00 and 27 pages to my results.

However, sometimes characters are auto-counted by e-readers or other browser readers instead of pages. Like below, the e-reader does not tell me pages, it only shows me characters and percent completed:

If I spent 4 hours reading this, I would add 04:00:00 and 40.1k charas to my results.

All together, my results would look like this:

User Time Pages Characters Sources

:high_voltage: Note that each source should only be counted one time in pages or characters, not both! :high_voltage:

:ogre: :kitchen_knife:

i have been summoned to enact violence

I will be deep in a cross-country move for this one, so I’ll be seeing you folks during the autumn equinox event :folded_hands: Super blessed to have an excellent substitute in @soggyboy who is the bestest reading coach here on the forum :growing_heart:

Thanks for hosting, @soggyboy! :high_touch: Good luck with moving, @taiyousea :heart_hands: See you in the autumn one! :maple_leaf:

I’d like to participate :durtle_the_explorer: I have 3day weekend that Sat/Sun/Mon, so it’s perfect for my schedule this time :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Hmm, what to make goals :eyes: ?

With courtesy of @GolyBidoof, my results from earlier show that I read 431 pages last summer (I’m pretty sure they’re all novel pages, not manga. Yep). Then I’d like to make page goal this time as well instead of character goal.

So I guess the next step would be to read more pages than that :eyes: :fire: Would also be cool to break 12h.

Will have to think on what book(s) to read. There’s still 3 weeks left. More importantly, I need to practice reading more. Lately, when I make an effort of trying to read a lot, I can only read for 1-1.5h and then I take a break and can’t get back into reading again. I can’t have that on the day of the readathon :face_with_steam_from_nose:

がんばらなきゃ!うおおお

Oh wow, already. Well the last readathon was a mangathon for me and I kinda want to get back to novels. I think since I’m halfway through part 2 volume 3(/4) of 本好き, I wanna finish out part 2 by the end of the readathon. So between now and then, 1.5 LN volumes.

i may offset this to the day before, as I am working that Sunday.

@araigoshi as my last readathon was a novelthon, perhaps I will do a mangathon instead. Maybe take it easy and get through my yotsuba stack

Thanks for hosting @soggyboy , and hope the move goes well Tai.

I’ll join on the Monday this time since I’m working on the weekend. Will try my best to carve out the whole day for reading but even if it’s only half the day I’ll still join.

Last time was VN time for me, but I think I’ll probably go back to novels since that’s all I’m really reading at the moment. Will try to think of something interesting to do like finishing a book in a day, but will wait and see how things go in the leadup. See you all on readathon weekend!

It feels like each readathon, the gap gets shorter and shorter!

I’m going to have a private onsen in Japan on the 19th and plan to read as much as I can then, looking forward to dropping my book in the water on accident reading with everyone.

I still have lots of books I’ve had forever. Time to read them. I’ll be in my new houe in a week, so I should have that more or less settled. That means I can read all I want. I’ll probably read on Friday because that day has the fewest obligations, and I can fry my brain and my eyes.

:brain: :eyes:

Did someone say… readathon? I have to make this one special since my first readathon was last summer! Can I break five hours this time???

My day will either be Saturday or late Friday into Saturday.

Would you believe if I said I’m having disruptive health (this time tooth) issues that make it uncertain if I can join? I need to make a default template to paste into these threads. Would like to join if I can anyway; I’m letting myself fall behind in Umineko club so this would be the way to catch up. Hopefully.

Yay, I will join in as well! I‘ll probably split it up into two half-days, and I will try to read 香君 4 in that period. It’s 240 pages, and I know the series (and the author‘s style in general) well, so if stamina stays with me, I should be able to do it :flexed_biceps:

Ohmigosh, summer readathon already??? I’m so in! I need to block off my calendar so no one tries to bother me. Actually… maybe I can take an extra day off work and give myself a 3 day weekend…

Need to think about what I’ll read this time around. At this point ハピネス is my readathon goto, but I think I want something more summery to read as well. Gotta save some horror for the autumn readathon, after all…

Definitely want to read for at least 6 hours, probably aiming for way more.

i was raised by wolves that taught me japanese

Will definitely be joining again, likely for manga. My goal is to finish up my current in-progress manga series (椎名くんの鳥獣百科 | L26) and start a brand-new one on the readathon.
