☀️ 2025 Summer Solstice 24-hour Readathon

The Summer Solstice 24-hour Readathon

:desert_island: :sunny: :flamingo:

Date: Saturday, 21st June

It’s the one-year anniversary of our first WK 24-hour Readathon event :birthday_cake: The Readathon is back for the summer solstice – the longest day of the year! And we’re celebrating the sun via pages of a book. This is the perfect time to bring out any novels, manga, visual novels, news articles, non-fiction, and more to join in on a special day with the community. If you’re ready to read, you’re ready to participate!

How it works: On Saturday the 21st, whenever it begins and ends in your local timezone, read as much in Japanese as you can! The day before or after are also acceptable if scheduling conflicts arise for you. Keep track of your progress in a way that makes sense for your medium: pages or characters, and the time spent reading them – when you’re finished, report your final numbers in the community “results” reply below and we’ll tally our collective amount together.

There is no expectation for the amount you read, or the difficulty, and anyone is welcome to join!

:sunny: Participation:

Set your goals, make a post if desired
Read during your 24 hours
Add your results to the community tally

To join in, you’re invited to make a post with your goals: Are there any series you’d like to start/complete? How many pages do you think you’ll read before time is up? Add some personal challenges if you’d like, or simply try to squeeze in a few extra pages to add to our numbers.

Choose your Readathon time. Will you be reading day-of? Need to defer to the day before or after? Throughout your 24-hour period, post updates with your progress. Let us know when you finish something, reach a milestone, or simply can’t read another word without your brain melting.

When your 24 hours come to a close, tell us your results! Compare them to your goals: did you exceed your expectations, or were you too ambitious with your plans? Did you finish anything that was mind-blowingly good? Did you catch up to a book club you were behind in?

Add your final numbers to the “Results” post in the next reply below. It will be opened to the community at the start of the event – don’t forget to add your time and pages before it closes again!

FAQ

Do I need to read for 24 full hours?

No, this challenge takes place over a 24-hour period, but you are only expected to read for the amount that you’re able during that time. Some of us may make it a personal challenge to read for as many hours within that period as possible, but even 1 hour of reading is an admirable feat.

Can I combine my time from the day before and after, too?

No, the addition of multiple days allows flexibility for those who want to participate but would otherwise be inconvenienced by a strict date. Please do not add reading stats that did not occur during your 24-hour reading period.

Do the books need to be in Japanese?

Yes, this challenge is meant to encourage us to read more Japanese. If you read other language books, please do not count them in the overall tally.

Am I required to post updates?

No, updates are simply a fun way for us to create a community event, but they are not necessary for participation.

:sunny: Goals:

The primary standings come from per-reader averages. This is to benefit readathons that have fewer participants and therefore lower raw numbers, as well as to celebrate our community effort. We are reading together, after all! The previous averages then become the goal to beat in our next event.

One year ago, the very first 24-hour Readathon was held! Sixteen participants stepped up for a single day of reading, unsure of the structure and parameters but willing to try something new. Since last year, we’ve learned that we can use these events for quarterly assessments of our reading skill, tracking how much stronger we’ve gotten or how our reading tastes have changed. And, most importantly, we’ve been able to come together for a weekend of fun in every season, reading with fellow nerds around the globe

:birthday_cake: For this anniversary event: I propose a special challenge with TWO goals to beat! The first being our customary goal of beating the previous event’s results (Spring '25). And the second goal, the extreme goal: to double our numbers from the first Summer event! :cake:  C-can we do it? :backhand_index_pointing_right::backhand_index_pointing_left:

FAQ for Adding Results

I don’t know the exact amount of time I read. What do I add?

No problem! Rounding your time to a general amount is still helpful for calculating our final results. It can be hard to measure reading time if you’re often tumbling down unrelated rabbit holes during look-ups. But if you stay aware of those moments and stop the clock for impromptu research/breaks, a general number is very helpful!

I didn’t read anything with “character counts” – should I try to calculate it?

No, please stick to the page numbers printed in the book you’re reading, or provided by the e-reader/browser reader you use. If you’re reading something like an online article, which has no page numbers and infinite scroll, you can copy and paste the text into a counter website like this one to get a character count.

One of my books has page numbers and the other book has a character count. How do I post my results?

Add your results together! It’s perfectly fine to have mixed counts, as long as each source (book/VN/etc) is only counted one time. Do not use calculations to turn the character counts into page numbers, or vice-versa. This skews the results in the direction of one result type. A diversity of results showcases the many ways we read!

I’m bad at math! I think I messed up the total on the bottom / I don’t want to mess with any of the numbers

All good  I check the numbers a few times per day to make sure the many results add up to the total at the bottom. If you don’t want to add your results for fear of breaking the table, please don’t hesitate to ping me (@taiyousea) to add the numbers for you!

Pages vs. Characters

Pages - Individual pages of a book or manga
Characters - Individual Japanese symbols (はるみ is composed of 3 characters)

Pages are the most common method of counting the amount read.

However, characters are sometimes auto-counted by e-readers or other browser readers, and can be the primary method of counting the amount read for sources like visual novels.

:down_arrow: This book explicitly tells me how many characters I’ve read, but it does not tell me any page numbers, so I would report 40.1k characters for this book in my results:

:down_arrow: This manga does tell me the page numbers, and I can report those in my results:

If I spent an hour reading the first book and then thirty minutes reading the second book, I would combine these numbers and my results on the table below would look like this:

Don’t mind me nicking a placeholder goals post here

Malinkal’s Goals

Time period: Sunday 22nd June

Goal time: 8+ hours

Goal totals: 100+ novel pages minimum, 500+ manga pages minimum, 20k characters of VN minimum. Exact distribution yet to be decided.

TBC:

Type Name Start point Goal End point
Novel 国境の南、太陽の西 L31 ? ?
Manga SPY×FAMILY 1 L30 pg.0 Finish
VN ひぐらしのなく頃に綿流し編
Other manga sitting on my shelf to get through some amount of - Naruto, One Piece, Conan, Horimiya, Dragon Ball, Look Back, Nana

Last readathon I was travelling all 24 hours and was thus captive, so read a ton.
This time, I will focus primarily on either Manga, or Novels, but I haven’t decided which yet.

I’m not going to beat my overall time from last readathon most likely. Since this time I’ll mostly be at home surrounded by endless piles of 積読 books, 幅広い分野で挑戦したい! (aka minor all-over-the-place-mentally tendencies will express themselves through me interacting with a ton of different media).

Haha I love this description  I’ll be traveling during the event this time, so I’ll be taking your place as the resident captive reader! Though I can only dream of approaching your 10+ hour reading time from spring :face_with_spiral_eyes: You’re a stronger soldier than I…

If my day is empty I’ll definitely try to read for the entire day but that’s probably a lot easier said than done. Will need to find something that won’t fatigue me easily.

Other than intending to read as much as I can, I’m not setting any specific goals for page or character counts. I’ll read whatever I feel like reading in each moment to hopefully keep myself engaged for that long.

lessgooo!!! hoping all the gut gods hear my prayer this time and let me participate without any health interruptions

No big goals this time, but I want to read for 5 hours minimum and cover 300 pages!

I keep on wanting to join a readathon and they keep being at really inconvenient times :face_in_clouds:
We’ll have company staying with us for a long weekend, so either I do my day 3 days early or 3 days late.. maybe I just hope that fall finally works out..

I will be one of those who start early, at Friday  I’m not sure how much I’ll get to read because I’m constant babysitting my two cats, one which needs to get medication and supervision constantly. However when my partner comes home from work I’ll chuck the responsibilities on him and then try to get as much reading as possible!

Also rocking the name Readaton because I do not know how to spell :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

oh boy another solstice is upon us…

I’m still waffling on readathon - pushing hard or just regular reading (no hard goals)
won’t beat any records…but lately motivation to read as much as I can is…

… not at it’s peak…

maybe it’s time to incorporate more doujins into the mix :innocent:

I’d like to participate :high_touch: I work a shift that Saturday (why is it so that the Readathon is always on my one work weekend in the month ), so I’m thinking of having my 24h starting in the evening after work, then end on Sunday evening.

Thoughts
During the :tulip: Spring Readathon I completed 推し、燃ゆ (144 pages) within the 24h timeframe. Recently I’ve been keeping track of how much time I spend reading every day which gives me total time spent for a given book. And I see that where I’m now, the total can be below 12h for a book like 薬屋のひとりごと 12 (440 pages), so I’m curious how it would be if I tried to power through Kusuriya 14 (408 pages) within 24h.

My prediction is that it’s going to be very tough due to fatigue. I know my energy level varies throughout the day (for example dipping around lunch time), so keeping focus in the afternoon on Sunday is going to be a real challenge [1]. At the same time, it would be a milestone for me it I can make it. I remember when I first started out reading my first light novel back in 2020, I’d read the physical copy of Sword Art Online at the pace of 5 pages per hour, taking me several months to finish it. Now I read Kusuriya at a pace of 30-40 pages per hour.

:light_bulb: Just like practicing for the day of an exam (or running for a real marathon), it’s time to practice reading for longer stretches of time :books: :muscle: :rocket: I’ll make my home post closer to the start of the event.

  1. I’m also addicted to a big fan of Kanae and he’s a power streamer (6h+), so that’s also adding to the challenge  ↩︎

eeeeeeeeeeeee I’m excited  But also a bit nervous as my reading has dipped recently. Hoping to read lots of things and remember why I like them and want to read them in the first place to hopefully lead into more reading more frequently.

My 24 hours will start from whenever I get up on the 21st until the same time the next day. I should be able to beat my spring results, so that’s my goals.

Stat Goals:
>8.5 hours
>418 pages

No character count goal as 空の軌跡FC is done[1], so I’m expecting to destroy the page count (as long as my brain cooperates). Compared to last summer when I got 100 pages in 4.5 hours, I’m looking forward to seeing what the difference is.

Content Goals:
Finish 風のたてがみ (it’s annoying me that I haven’t touched it since halloween, currently at 15%)
Finish しろくまカフェ (currently at 55%)
Finish the first F: 落第生 chapter (7 more pages, doable!)
Read a chapter of 薬屋のひとりごと

Plus like lots of chapters of other things, but those are the big ones. I’ve 21 things in progress on Natively, I do not expect to make progress on all of them, I do expect to start at least one new thing.

This sounds fun. Do you keep the median results as well as the average?

I’ll probably do it one day late, we’ll see
EDIT: Doing it one day early: today

If I do, I don’t have any particular goals in mind: just read as much as I can

EDIT after deciding to participate: I’m trying to catch up with Horimiya, so goal: at least one volume of that

manga Horimiya vol 2 44pg 43m
manga Horimiya vol 3 173pg 1h59m

Hmmm my goal right now is 10 minutes per day so I think on the solstice I will go bonkers and kick it up to a staggering 30 minutes

how are the characters read calculated?
if i’m trying to focus on reading, i don’t want to be spending all my time counting the 漢字

If you’re reading something with pages, you don’t need to count characters. If it doesn’t have pages, you might have a character count available from a text hooker or else you can estimate by counting a bit and multiplying.

Good to be back again, everyone!

My last challenge ended up being a little bit less than I wanted to do, and again because of some irl stuff it’s hard for me to plan to do too much, but I still want to get in with some good reading this time!

Goals:

  • Read through all of 欠けた月とドーナッツ | L24 - This is a series I read in english a few years ago on someone’s recommendation, and I really loved it. For pride month this year I’d like to revisit it in japanese. It’s 4 volumes which shouldn’t be that much to bite off
  • Read more とらドラ! | L32 - Based on my current pace I should be pretty close to finishing volume 2 by the time the challenge rolls around, so maybe I’ll make it a goal to put a bow on this during the challenge.

As always, looking forward to reading with everyone, and thanks to @taiyousea for putting up with us for a whole year!

I was just starting to wonder when this would be happening! I’ve been struggling with a bunch of stuff irl lately and haven’t been reading nearly as much. It’ll be good to have this to look forward to, and hopefully I can use it to get myself back into reading mode! Not sure about goals yet, other than catching up on the book clubs I was supposed to be participating in - I’m so far behind now! :sob:
