I’ve been pretty busy (and exhausted) lately, so I haven’t carved out as much time for active listening/watching, but I’ve been doing a lot of background listening to Slow Japanese, Sakura Tips, and some N5 conversation practice videos on YouTube, etc. while walking the dog or doing chores.
I ended up restarting Slow Japanese from the beginning, because it was getting too difficult to understand. (The host gradually ramps up the difficulty over the course of the podcast.) At first this was discouraging, until I realized that now I understand the early episodes much better than I did a few months ago!
would you mind linking slow japanese? I’d like to try it out!
It’s a podcast so the easiest way to find it is to search “Slow Japanese” on your podcast app of choice. Here’s the website though! The episodes are usually under 10 minutes each. The difficulty gradually ramps up over time so you probably want to start at the first episode.

It sounds like you and I are in the same boat. Good job keeping at it! I haven’t been posting replies with detailed updates these last few days, but I have still been updating my home post, and that little thing has been keeping me listening to something, anything, a little every day. I may have to give the Slow Japanese podcast a listen as well, and see how I do on that one.

Feel like I’m getting back into the swing of things today. I’ve started leveling out the incoming reviews, which has left me some mental energy to get back into some more listening. Today I re-played a video that I’ve been watching pieces of, but this time I listened to the whole 30 minute video in one play. I had it playing while I did some chores so I wasn’t fully focused on it, but I was able to tune in and understand a decent amount.
Hi everyone! This is my first post, aside from updating the participant board (So far, i’m at 17/35 days).
In the last two days off work i binged "The medalist"メダリスト season 1 and 2! great show! Hopefully i can continue finding more shows that catch my interest, as that’s the best way for me to carry on this challenge 
I’ve always been bad at consistency, so I won’t beat myself up for not holding a streak, or get too obsessed with tracking my numbers, rather just pick myself up each time and keep going til the end

Started watching まんぷく last week and have gotten really into it. It’s an NHK 朝ドラ, which has recently become avaiable on Netflix worldwide thanks to an agreement between NHK and Netflix.
The episodes are technically 15 minutes long, but are honestly more like 10 minutes when you skip the recap and the theme song. I find the short episode format very convenient, I have been watching them before work or when I get home and just want a moment to wind down. I’m watching with English subs but I’m surprised by how much of the dialogue I am able to catch, most characters speak quite clearly and the vocabulary isn’t too difficult (for now).
For podcasts, these past few days I enjoyed listening to:
- Nihongo con Teppei’s 田舎の日記 episodes
- Bite Size Japanese, episode 713
- Layla spoke about her grandfather’s passing. I had learned the word 組織 (そしき) on Wanikani very recently and she kept saying a very similar word, but I was like, hmm, this must be a funeral-related word and not “organization”, and effectively she was saying 葬式 (そうしき), the word for funeral. Listening is so challenging but remains such a good way to confront language difficulties!
- Let’s Talk in Japanese, episode 400.
- In this episode the podcast host gradually progressed from speaking about a topic at an N4 level to an N2 level. I thought it was a good format because I felt comfortable listening at the beginning and it gave me the confidence that I could follow, and I did my best to keep up at the end (although I admit I got lost!). But I liked this kind of episode and thought it might interest some of you.

That sounds less like a vocabulary problem and more like a real-time processing problem. Recognising a word in the subtitles is one step, but recognising the same word in connected speech and parsing the sentence before the next line appears takes separate practice.
One exercise that may help is:

Listen to a short line once without reading.

Replay it with Japanese subtitles and identify the main chunks rather than translating every word.

Check only the grammar or expression that blocked you.

Replay it once more without looking at the subtitles.
Try to limit this to two or three useful lines per episode, otherwise the series can quickly turn into a textbook.

Either way, the fact that you recognise the vocabulary is a good sign, the next step is making those familiar words automatic when you hear them.
