A few new locations become accessible this week. Feel free to explore but one location is off limits: a hole in the ground in the middle of a swamp, the aptly named 沼の洞窟. Leave this one alone. Why would you even want to go there anyway?! It’s a terrible place.
We’ll be facing powerful enemies next week, so gearing up, stocking up healing items and reaching level 10 or more may be a good idea too. If you have a monk, at this point you may find that you get better stats when you unequip armour and weapons.
More details
Using your boat you can now reach new locations. These locations are:
The Dwarf Cave
The Elf Town and adjacent Elf Castle
The Swamp Cave
The West Castle
That last location is where you’ll find the forsaken king I mentioned above. To find it, hear what the people in Elf Town and Elf Castle have to say.
As mentioned above, avoid the Swamp Cave this week.
You can also ignore the Dwarf Cave if you want, there isn’t much to do there right now and we’ll visit the place in a few weeks anyway.
While sailing on your boat there’s a (rather dull) secret minigame. You normally trigger it by pressing A and B a bunch of times, or whatever the equivalent is for your version: 15 Puzzle | Final Fantasy Wiki | Fandom
In some versions the game can give you gil or items for solving the puzzle (with better rewards for faster times). Some versions also grant you an “achievement” for completing the puzzle.

I’m playing along
I will catch up later
I’m still playing but I haven’t reached this section yet
I’m a filthy preplayer but I’m here for the discussion
I haven’t played ahead (technically) content wise, but my warriors did go around and scout to see where it will be possible to go next. Here is their report.
To grab a screenshot of one of my favourite little easter eggs from back in the day!
Also will have to grind a little bit of money to afford those nice Level 4 spells. But I got Fira and Thundara. コウイチ can finally nuke an entire enemy group at once. And from the little black mage pose when casting a spell, they’re very happy to do so.
Gee ___ Town, how come your devs let you have TWO black magic shops? (spoilers)
I managed to start by sailing to just about anywhere other than where we’re intended to go, including a strip of land where you can get off the boat but seemingly nothing is going on right now.
My strat of buying like 4 potions and leaving us underprepared worked out nicely with us limping to the finish again, just before finding the town I learned that you don’t mess around with those eyeball enemies when they paralyzed both of my fighters and the mages were completely out of spells. Finally had to run from a fight!
My monk took it all off finally and wow he hits hard with these like 4 hit ~150s now. A town of double magic shops certainly doesn’t help my money situation, but magic that hits all enemies feels so good. Bit of a shame I didn’t fill out people’s Lv2 spells before leaving since it’s not giving us earlier magic options right now, but oh well. We’ll be back or have another chance some day I bet.
I didn’t wander to find the swamp hole just yet so I’ll have to figure out where it is next week. Just playing naturally has us at level 10, on the cusp of 11, so I guess that’s thanks to Pixel Remaster XP boosting but it’s nice I’m keeping up without grinding.
Just wanted to share a look at classic font since I recall almost no one was using it. I’ve started to find this sort of thing kinda cute; maybe it’s cause I’m playing more old games like Chrono Cross right now where it has slightly garbled kanji. You adjust quickly. UI stuff has been a real pet peeve with me recently in game remakes/remasters, the way a lot of them lose their character and become all streamlined and minimalist. Along with that, seeing text in my RPG that looks just like what I would start typing if I opened word right now is also a turn off, haha.
Yeah I was surprised that the “retro” font wasn’t more popular but I guess it may be a bit overwhelming if you’re not used to it and the way it simplifies some kanji. I definitely think that it looks much better in this context.
If I’m not mistaken every place you can reach by boat has at least one location that’s visitable. I suspect that you missed the inconspicuous entry to the dwarf cave, but you’re not missing anything, we’ll get there as part of the story eventually.
Very possible I missed something there for sure! But yeah I can’t blame people for the font thing; I think our Japanese experience is pretty mixed in here, but this font IS definitely a bit less clear and requires you to be more comfortable filling in the gaps yourself.
Finished this week’s content. No more scouting options before next week happens, sad. I will just stay on my boat and press A and B until something happens. At least I stole the dwarves’ money as consolation price.
The Link town was almost a complete surprise (a lot of screenshots had leaked in the main thread). Looking forward to seeing how the Dark Elf looks like, the same but in dark pink maybe?
Very impressed by the new bridge that just got built by the way, they made it high enough so that you can go under with the boat.
However the boat is too big to go on the rivers, more sad.
Will have to wait for the カター then! ← spoiler only if you haven’t read the manual
The Pixel Remaster is mentioned elsewhere on that page, maybe they forgot to add it in there. Or it’s difficult because of how many platforms the PR runs on with different control schemes…
I’m playing Pixel Remaster on Steam and I couldn’t get the minigame to show up no matter what. I tried holding A and pressing B dozens of times, holding B and pressing A dozens of times, and several other combinations that I knew wouldn’t work but I tried anyway out of frustration >.< Maybe I’ll try again later.
