💎 Final Fantasy 1 - Week 3

Finished this week’s content! Picked up some vocab, but I will definitely go back to some NPC’s dialogue/the spreadsheet to read some text again.
Especially the bridge wall of text, I skimmed it and read as I could, kinda got the gist of it (just by mostly having played the game already) but definitely need to look it over.

リュウ still hasn’t put on any pants, however ケン acquired some new gear so now he can tank even more hits!

Week 3 content

My poor black mage is lacking a bit behind.

コウイチ: Please tell me you have some multi hit spells, I’m sitting here shanking single wolves for 7 damage…
黒魔術師: スロウ is the best I can do

But at least I got an attack up spell for him, so now he can… buff ケン and then shank wolves for 7 damage…

His time will come, I’m sure of it

Are you talking about the brooms in Matoya’s cave? I’m still in the process of looking that one up, I haven’t looked at the vocab sheet yet… It did leave me quite perplexed

That’s the one :upside_down_face:

That’s what they call a bit of good old reverse psychology

Finished this week’s main content. Might go back and do a bit of exploring around for more money to buy gear/spells

Week 3 Play Report

So crossing the bridge triggered the little cutscene. I was mostly fine with it, but 探求 had me frantically searching a dictionary and nearly falling behind. Also got to get used to 覚える also being able to mean “to feel”. But still, mostly got it so wasn’t beating myself up too hard

And across to the continent, where I started looking around. Happened upon マトーヤの洞窟 where I talked to the brooms. I noticed them saying 『るえとっぜん たぼるせんゃき』 which I worked out was a backwards phrase but not sure if it has any significance yet. Then saw マトーヤ talking about her crystal ball being missing so I guess I should be on the lookout for that

After that I made my way over to プラボカ and along the way encountered some ogres. My first encounter had some adds, so I ran away because I wasn’t sure how strong the ogre was, but second encounter was just an ogre on its own so I tried fighting it and won. Then made it into town where I looked longingly at all the stuff I could buy and bought none before talking to everyone. Not realising that I’d be thrown into a fight with pirates. But I managed to come through fairly easily, partly thanks to the Sleep spell from my black mage. After which I obtained the boat. I love the idea that you beat up some goons and the pirate boss is suddenly so scared of you he’s like “please leave me alone, here take my boat, don’t come any closer!”

Everyone on team stabby stab has gone from level 6 to 10 and purchased new swords. After all, a strong offense is the best defense and I can’t be bothered to grind for armour.

About the brooms

Was it just gibberish? Lol.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AFXsGU4Rr4o I really like the Theatrhythm remix, I play it on Ultimate everytime I boot the game up. All the versions are good for sure.

Edit: Meant to reply to the music post lol.

Like he said, it’s one of many ways to say のです. の turns the whole sentence into a noun. If it follows a noun, then the noun needs to be turned into a “complete” sentence with な (which is actually just だ, but the pronunciation changed to な over time). Then you stick on a だ or です. To say 'the thing I just said… IS", which is why it emphasizes it. You can also add on yet another particle to make it a question like “is it really true that…?”. Here’s the different combinations I’ve seen before: のだ, おです, のですか, のか, の, んです, んですか, んだ, んだか, なんです, なんだ, なんですか, なんだか, なのですか. I only list them out to show how annoying and confusing this ending is, even when you’ve seen it before!

I’ve never seen のだか, instead people just say のか (masculiine) or の (feminine). I might have seen んだか before, though. Some of those are more common than others.

The third line of the opening text crawl is like the final exam for someone’s second year japanese class. What the heck.

Had to do a little catch up from last week. Ran into an オーガ on my way to the Pravoka, my poor all mage team almost got wiped but we made it! Gonna explore the town and gear up tomorrow. Realizing how squishy my team is, the protect spell has been a great help tho.

If anyone learning Japanese hasn’t yet gotten a good feel for 適当, please look at the FF1 development process.

Final Fantasy 14 has a slower version of the song that it’s also great.

Definitely didn’t realize that there was something to discuss there. Does Cancel button + > + L does anything anywhere?

Close but not quite.

broom riddle explanations

So as you figured out the broom speak backwards. In the pixel remaster on Switch the message ends up being:

キャンセル・ボタン・ゼット・エル

“Cancel button ZL”

Pressing this outside brings up the world map.

Now this is a bit anticlimactic because you probably knew how to display the map already, but it made more sense in the original Famicom game where you only had A, B, start and select and the only way to bring up the map was pressing the unintuitive “B + select”. I genuinely didn’t know it was a thing until I saw this message.

By the way I find the Famicom/NES version of the map very charming and surprisingly detailed given the technical limitations:

The vocab sheet for week 4 is ready in the Google doc. I’ll also be adding 5 and 6 now because I won’t be home for a while and I don’t want to setup ichiran again on my laptop…

Bunpro deck updated for week 4, only 38 new items this week! (Although my personal percentage of known words dropped from 46% to 42%)

Regarding this comment in the doc:

What’s this guys name? Is he called Panku? Is he a “punk”? What the heck does パンク mean here?

I apologize for the confusion, I was coming up with somewhat descriptive names for the NPCs and this one has what looked to me like a punk haircut, so I called him “punk guy”.
