I think for FF2 I’m heavily considering moving back to the famicom version, especially for that one to see exactly how its original design worked with the various… more uncompromising parts of it. Just have to decide if I want to go out of my way to get an actual famicom and all that just yet. Would be fun…

I may or may not have started filthy preplaying just that yesterday. To prepare the club of course. I’m enjoying it but the lack of kanji is still painful, especially given that this is the first time I’m playing the game and I’m going in completely blind.
The complexity gap from FF1 is pretty impressive and I’m enjoying it so far. No idea how the “idiosyncratic” gameplay elements are going to work out in the long run but I’m open minded about it. And the music is amazing as well:

Yeah it gets SUCH a negative reputation but some of that seems to be either from automatic disdain for the idea of losing unused stat points occasionally (absolutely fine with me, at least in concept), and some widespread rumors that you have to hit your party members to gain HP or something (which, while possible, the fans of the game tell me definitely is not necessary or even really desirable to do).
That, and it apparently has some complicated maze-like dungeon design, which I also don’t anticipate disliking but some people very much do.
That main theme really is nice. Such great music in this series. You know, Uematsu was just lamenting the state of videogame composition (there’s a link in there to the full JP interview if anyone is feeling like some reading practice). I find myself more or less entirely agreeing with what he says about modern game composition, on the whole. And would probably apply “Frankly speaking, there’s less ‘weird things’ now” to even more than music, sadly.

Managed to blitz through the story this week, then went out exploring/grinding just to wipe on the way back to a scorpion pack (The Ghasts were also troublesome, but I managed against them somehow). Fortunately it seems Pixel Remaster just puts me back at the last town, because I had not saved since last week. The OST for Matoya’s cave was somewhat recognizable to me from FFXIV, even through FFXIV’s version seems to be more calm/slower
There’s some lines I didn’t fully understand this week (Well, plenty of lines I didn’t understand at first, but I pushed through most with the dictionary)

What is なん doing here? If I just ignore/remove it I get a sentence I understand (Something like “… is in an eternal unending sleep”), but surely なん had some purpose?

おわびにオレの『船』をやるからよう⋯!
から is what throws me off here, I’m already know it as from/because. And again, I can remove it and still understand the overall sentence, but is it ungrammatical to do so? I was thinking of おわびに as expanding on オレの『船』をやる (I will [as an apology give my boat]), but does it make more sense to think of it and から as expanding the よう ? (An an apology I will [give my boat])

I think it’s なのだ:
んだ: Japanese Explanatory Form (んです/のだ/のです)
Followed by って making it a quotation (“it is said that…”)
I think that the よう is just a sentence ending よ particle, not 様 if that’s what you had in mind.
As for から I think it’s just him saying in a somewhat broken train of thought that you should forgive/believe him because he’s giving you his ship as a sign of goodwill. It confused me too but that’s the only way it makes sense to me.
Oh those scorpions got me too. Actually they only killed 1 member of my party, but I didn’t want to be out of sync with exp so I let them all die. It took forever for my white mage to die, very good evasion skills apparently!
You can also flee. That doesn’t give you XP.
Oh good to know. Would that work too if one of the monster from the pack had already died?
I think so, you don’t get partial XP in this game.

Huh, am I using the tent wrong? For whatever reason my first warrior doesn’t get healed fully. And I thought magic spell usage should be restored again. Basically like the inn but wherever I like. Or did I get that wrong? Original nes version ^^
No that’s how the item works:
- Sleeping bag: restore 30 HP to all party
- Tent: restores 60 HP to all party
- Cottage: restores 120HP to all party and all spell uses
On NES using these items also saves the game, but there’s a bug that makes it save before it restores spell uses, so if you reload the save you are back to the previous spell count. So you may want to use a Cottage and then a sleeping bag if you want your save to have all spells available.
Note that there may be some confusion if you read guides online because they shuffled the names around in English for whatever reason:

Yeah the tents are really crap compared to what they become in later entries, that was a surprise for me too.

Also, went to the peninsula of power! It was swell, ストライ was very helpful there as were a couple of revives. So far can only take down up to 3 of the enemies there at a time but will keep grinding there, I appreciate the giant xp boost
Oops! I totally forgot this was going on! I’m totally that character who oversleeps and misses the quest and then shows up ten episodes later after chasing down the heroes. Great.
That’s because you’re not playing the original Famicom release where it does… nothing at all. At least it’s not as bad as シェイラ that’s supposed to lower the enemies’ evasion stat but instead increases it…
