šŸ’Ž Final Fantasy 1 - Week 1

I think crowd sourcing the translation is a great idea. I’m still pretty new to learning and don’t have much vocab so going into this ā€œbookā€ club is a bit over my head and daunting. I think trying to parse some sentences and then posting them here is a great way to encourage learning.

So… I guess I’m doing this thing! And man am I in over my head! I’m playing with my laptop open, switching between the spreadsheet and Jisho. I’ve did a few battles and talked to a few people in town, and my brain is already fried! I probably should have started last week.

Anyway, I’m playing on Switch with modern text and remastered soundtrack.

My party

The names look familiar, you say? No idea what you’re talking about.

Is Matthew from Suikoden?

Don’t hesitate to contribute your translations here or on the doc.

Nope, it’s actually Sabin from FF VI! I didn’t know that was his actual Japanese name until I looked it up. He was the first monk-like Final Fantasy character I could think of.

Oh right, it’s true that some characters in later games have ā€œnormieā€ western names that were changed in the English versions. Looking forward to that.

I got confused about the starting week, so I just started yesterday in Japanese play, having done a pre-run in English last week. I’ve just been reading that some people have been learning the words, and I recall somebody posted them sorted by frequency. But there is so much posting here and in other threads that finding anything useful that’s not at the top of the week is really difficult. I should have bookmarked it.

The good news is because of last week’s practice, I have no problem in playing the game. Probably the hardest thing was putting the names in, as the IME didn’t work. However the Japanese dialogue is pretty advanced for me. My first attempt as the words went by were ā€œWorld something, wind something, sea something, whole world something black something, but people … wasn’t that the word I did a yo mama joke on, what was it… beforehand? …oh heck it’s rolling off the top of the screen….ā€

So the first thing is to thank whoever transcribed the Japanese into the spreadsheet (@Simias, was it?). Having the text where I can take time to translate is awesome! I think I’ll be reviewing most of it that way rather than in game.

The frequency list is also in the spreadsheet, see the Vocab tab

Ooh, thank you!

One last post about this classical 悀/悓 ending.

I was rewatching a Game Gengo video on Monster Hunter Stories, which also featured some trickier stuff in the prelude, and our new friend made an appearance there too.

This should be queued up to the spot:

Anyway, I’m playing on Switch, though it has made getting screenshots onto my computer to make this post kind of awkward so maybe I won’t in future weeks.

Opening cutscene

While the 3 word sentences are going: Wow, this is so slow, can it speed up.
Game: Ok, almost I went from 3 word sentences to 3 sentence dialogs
Me: Oh now I can’t keep up

Party Details

I considered doing an 8-bit theater party, but I didn’t want to hinder myself with a thief. I considered going with a monk just named ćƒ†ć‚£ćƒ• for the troll factor. Also considered going for the Other Warriors but couldn’t find a good way to line up the classes.

So instead I went for the Warriors of Darkness (from FF14, not to be mixed up with the Dark Warriors from 8-bit theater)

I’m surprised the remaster didn’t fix NPCs pathing and blocking doorways…

Get out of the way!

The princess is called ć‚»ćƒ¼ćƒ©, hmm?

New headcanon:

Maybe it’ll displace this one by the end of the game

Anyway, I went around the field until I hit the entrance of the next week location. Apparently I ā€œluckedā€ out on random encounters as I got there with only 1 encounter, and the game decided to punish me for my hubris.

Welp

Made me burn a potion on the second encounter!

I do find it interesting that level 2 doubled most of the party’s HP then level 3 was like +3 HP lol.

Anyway, this is my party at the end of today’s play session.

Final Status

Maybe I’ll grind a few levels before entering the dungeon next week.

Even if they are just weak starter area monsters, an entire screen full is absolutely terrifying!

Took me a while to get it working, the steps described by Nintendo here with the QR code didn’t work for me, but I found the solution thanks to a Reddit post. If you have an Android device, then with the app SwitchBuddy: Switch Companion can scan the QR code and easily gets the image, then it’s easy enough for me to get it from my Android phone to my PC.

The transcription is just for the remake, right? Any interest for the original version? I wrote down all lines I found in the castle area yesterday for my own convenience and would be willing to post them here and even giving it a shot at translating them properly. But not many people are playing the original kanji-free version, so interest might be at zero

I have added some of the lines of the original when I felt like they differed significantly (using a different background color and adding a note explaining where it’s from). Feel free to add more if you want.

I did add the kanji when transcribing however.

On Linux I connect the switch using USB then enable the media share option from the settings (it’s buried pretty deep). Then I can mount it like an external drive using jmtpfs and backup all the screenshots that way.

I can just sync everything to my pcloud in one command:

jmtpfs ~/mnt && rclone copy ~/mnt/Album/ pcloud:media/Switch/

Apparently this is also available on the Switch 2:

Ahh, I’ve upgraded a switch 2 which doesn’t support sending things direct. Nintendo’s own companion app does transfers for switch 2, similar to the one you linked but it’s still a multi step switch → phone → PC setup :frowning:

That sucks. Then again IIRC for the longest time the only way to get screenshots out of the switch was by taking the SD card out or… posting them on Twitter, so I guess there’s consistency in how garbage it is.

Oh some people have started contributing translation on the doc! Nice. I like the notes.

I guess at the end of each week the more advanced participants can just flex by bulk-translate all that’s left. Or if nobody else volunteers, I will.

Ah, that’s why I didn’t recognize the original script, can’t read kanji  Google sheets are also notoriously not working on my device, so I won’t add anything there and usually would have not even looked at them if I wasn’t looking for if anybody already did a transcript.

Oh bummer. I don’t find them very practical to use either but I saw that it was used in most clubs on these forums so I went with the flow.

I had tried connecting the Switch to my PC with USB but it didn’t work.
Just tried a different cable and it worked :woman_shrugging: then I followed the steps here (section 2). It is more convenient that having to use the phone too.
Now I hope some interesting stuff will happen in week 2 so I have some screenshots to share!

My biggest complaint with Google Sheets is that it breaks if I try to use Yomichan, is it just me?

Not sure what could be a good alternative. Notion maybe?
