🌦️ Sundrop's Refreshed Study Log 🌦️

hello… it’s me

(:

I have neglected this log for a few weeks. But I have NOT neglected my studies! I have continued, messily, on, these past few weeks, as work has become busier I have struggled with keeping a steady pace, but I’m nonetheless not very far from target at the moment.

No check chart today, because today is for CATCHING UP. I have (shudder) 163 Wanikani and 83 Anki reviews to get through this afternoon. I have already completed 154 Anki reviews. I technically need to do vocabulary part 13 via my curriculum, but to be honest, the reading sections have not been taking me terribly long, so I might resign 13 to tomorrow so as not to overload myself.

I did about 2 hours of studies yesterday, which caught me up to the point where I am now. I also took the 2nd grammar mock test in Kanzen N3, and did better, but not great–63%. Why is grammar so damn hard!!! I’m generally doing pretty fine in all other areas–reading comprehension, vocab, listening–but grammar questions trip me up like no other. I’m hoping that continual exposure through reading will get me where I need to go.

Now back to the subject at hand, a CATCH UP DAY, even though I am feeling so lazy. I have a candle lit, tea at hand, twilight nostalgia comfort playlist with rain ambiance queued, water for hydration, adorable pomodoro app ready to go. I have to romanticize this hardcore if I have any hope of getting through the next few hours.

To be certain, 246 total reviews are not the most I have faced in my Wanikani/Anki career, but I’m exhausted today and the ADHD wants me to do anything else but concentrate for a long period of time.

HOW I AM GOING TO TACKLE THIS.
A checkbox ofc.

CATCH UP LOG

PoppyColors
83 Anki
163 WK

POM1: Focus on WK. Twilight playlist was so beautiful and had me dancing ballet in my head. Became nostalgic for ballet. Went to dancewear website and bought a cute leotard I’ve been eying for 6 months. Felt like dancing ballet over studying. Realized I was horribly distracted. Begrudgingly returned to WK. RESULT: 86/163 to go.

POM2: WK is complete yayy. For now. I level up in 17 hours. OH WAIT I HAVE TO DO MY LESSONS. Ok. Next section is for lessons + finishing my Anki.

POM3: Finished my 15 lessons, and waiting on 8 Anki reviews to finish this out. When my break is over I’ll finish my reviews, pack up my books, do some yoga, play pokemon, draw a tree, eat a potato,

POM4: I’m done yahooo time to do those things

I’ll come back and check these off as I go. And perhaps write a little log update.
Wish me luck :')

It’s not over.

I suppose I caught up with the Wanikani and Anki last time, which is gr8 bc those can really build up, I have neglected my N3 master curriculum. I made a lil ‘ketchup plan’ (bc in grade school I didn’t realize it was a ‘catch up’ day) to get me back on track over the next 4 days.

Unfortunately that means powering thru 3 things today. So again, I have my candle, hydration, pomodoro app, cozy twilight study playlist, etc. And I will track my progress with this little post.

But first–I’m level 25!! What! Literally can’t believe I made it past the slump that was level 17. Here’s my progress:

UPDATE
Got 13 and 14 done in 1 hour, then spent this last hour in a tutoring session. I’ve still got the reading to do, but I’ve gotta sleep for work in the morning. Prioritizing sleep right now and will add the reading to tomorrow’s ketchup schedule.

Onward with catching up.

Woah, 5 weeks until JLPT? I feel like I could pass, at this point. Reading comprehension and vocab questions are going p well. Grammar is a monster but getting better. Just gotta keep it up!

Today’s agenda is kinda bulky, as it’s a weekend. Shout out to this log for keeping me going. I’m prepped with a candle, water, bookstand, notebook, pumpkin, study playlist. When this is done I wanna carve pumpkins and knit a sweater.

What have I to do today?

Hello all… taking a brief break after completing a WK review sesh for an update. First of all…

LEVEL 26 BBY!!!

Here we are with the little progress chart. As you can see, I got a bit stuck on this level. Unfortunately, things became particularly overwhelming at work during this level, and I stayed consistently busy outside of work as well. This means that I got way off track with my WK routine (as well as other studies). Alas :/. Glad to be moving forward again, however, and as things have chilled out a bit I feel back on track. At the rate I’m going, my goal is to make it to Level 60 + N2 by the end of next year. Moving forward…

JLPT Update

Really fell behind on my study plan these past 2 weeks which sucks because I’m so close to the end. I’m still moving forward, but feeling the stress of being behind schedule. Luckily, I’ve done so much prep over the past few months that I’m feeling fairly confident about taking this test. My reading speed is perhaps my greatest weakness at present, so today I want to focus on catching up with reading practice problems from Kanzen.

Listening is going to be just fine as long as I can pay attention. I recently did a practice test on 1.75x speed (to save time lol) and ended up doing just as well as on regular speed, so I think the biggest inhibitors there are vocabulary.

These next few weeks, I’m becoming a little bear in a cave and taking care of my sleeping schedule + food + mental health. I will of course also be studying, and while it’s a bit stressful to be behind my plan, I will catch up as much as possible.

I watched a TV show

I was in the mood for a cheesy kdrama vibe and was surfing netflix when I suddenly thought… dude… I’m studying japanese… and there are tons of cheesy adorable jdramas. I picked a random one which looked kinda cute: 恋が続くよどこまでも (say that to the tune of ‘I’ve been working on the railroad’). I watched it MOSTLY ENTIRELY in Japanese. A few times during pivotal moments I turned on English subtitles and rewatched to catch the phrasing, but I would say I watched this show about 95% in Nihongo.

This is actually a huge accomplishment for me, because it is the first time I have genuinely sat down and enjoyed a show + grasped most of the meaning in my second language. I understood and enjoyed enough to be excited to keep watching! This is huge for me. Many a time I have started watching some Japanese content and quickly exhausted my brain with what felt like more hardcore studying. I didn’t understand everything in this show, but what I watched felt fun and NOT like homework. Genuinely so happy about this. I’m adding it to my Media Library.

Coming to the End of my N3 Studies
Literally so excited to switch things up and move more into immersion. Can’t wait to forge a little post-N3 plan. For now, lots of care as I prep for the test. I will likely be back in this blog today as a study aid while I spend the rest of my Sunday night がんばりますing.

This is another active study post for this beautiful Sunday.
It will live for the period of this day, and will likely see many changes.

First, to write out all the study goals floating around in my head. Likely it will be impossible to finish all of these, but we'll see what happens.

Build a plan for this week

Ya ok that’s a ridiculous lot. But I have seen worse in college (have i?). I will be back with updates and attacks shortly.

Here we go. My strategy is to use my Pomodoro app, break things into 25 min intervals, and see how far I get.

Tomato

  • POM1
    • 目標 Reading is my weakest. So here I must start. Start and see how far I can get.
    • 実績 I got thru 3 problems (3-4 questions each). I was slow but did all right.
  • POM2
    • 目標 Continue with this vast reading.
    • 実績 Made it through 3 more problems with varying confidence.
  • POM 3
    • 目標 Drill through the readings.
    • 実績 Another 3 done! Making my way. This round went a bit better. But I still find that reading these passages feels like a weird fuzzy dream where I kind of know what’s going on but am making a lot of inferences. Gotta practice…
  • POM 4
    • 目標 Readreadread.
    • 実績 Got thru 2 questions and really lost focus on the last one.

Okay… so I managed to get through 11 passages of text (44 practice questions). I made it from page 96 → 117. As you can see, there is a lot left for me to do, but I’m glad I got some reading practice in to start, that needs work.

More than studying late into tonight, I need sleep. So there I shall go, after composing a bit of a realistic plan for tomorrow:

  • Anki
  • WK + 15
  • V2 → anki
  • V20 and V21
  • Reading 118-131
  • Build a plan for the week

Thus concludes this Sunday Studies post and I’m off to bed <3 x.x

Hi. I’m eating melon pan. I expect to be here (this log) quite a bit as I plunge through the final weeks.

So I’ve already gotten thru a few things today, including designing a study map for the last two weeks. It’s top heavy and ambitious, so I expect things to be a little fluid if I can’t do it all. Most important is still general body health, so sleep will take priority. Here we go:

I have ultra-abbreviated it so it is likely unintelligible.

    • 実績 LOL I didn’t want to do Anki so instead I continued with reading. But caught up to my reading goal at last!
  • POM3
    • 目標 Okayyy no choice but to Anki.
    • 実績 I made it through my Anki deck. Yahoooo. This is where I end for today, I have some things to take care of tonight. The final 4 remaining items will be divided into my future days.

Good freaking day. Here I am again.

Today I suffered from a debilitating migraine for several hours, which has again thrown a loop in the plan. Nonetheless, on I go, if just for a bit. Just finished up my 3rd round of WK reviews so I’m done with that for the day, but here for a little accountability and sense of community while I work for perhaps one more hour.

I expect that I will get through my first 3 tasks before closing up shop for the day. Alas! Bit by bit.

    • 実績 Section complete.
  • POM2
    • 目標 21B. When this is done I’m going to breeze through the 20/21 review section real fast then call it a night.
    • 実績 Complete! And I only missed one question for the review section. Wheee.

Time for cozy bed vibes. I’ll be back tomorrow (probably). Here’s how things seem to be looking for tomorrow’s tasks:

Hello hello.

Above is a picture I took three seconds ago, I’m sitting down to the last golden glimmers of the ginkgo tree outside. IT’S SO PRETTY. I have the opportunity to start earlier today, and am hoping I do not get too distracted by this BEAUTIFUL GOLDEN GLOW.

Today I have a lot of practice problems! I’ve never quite explained my abbreviations in my study log, but I’ll do a little explaining now before I start.

Kanzen N3 vocabulary is divided into a number of semi-digestible sections, which always begin with a vocabulary list and end with a series of practice questions. My goal used to be one of these sections a day, but I found it was taking a lot from me (and perhaps not very effective) to learn a bunch of new vocab and apply it to practice problems all in one go. So for these last few weeks, I’ve divided each section into A and B. Every day I need to look over the vocabulary list and add words I don’t know to my Anki deck (part A). The next day, I need to go through the practice questions for that section (part B).

I’ve been accomplishing part A without accomplishing part B for several days now, so now is my time to catch up. I’ve got 1B, 2B, and 3B on the menu, along with some reading and kanji review. It’s a lot, so let’s see how far I get with ample time.

It… is… snowing!!! For the first time this year!! :D!!

Okayyy what a day it has been. Today has been my heaviest anki day yet. Yall, I did 525 cards today (my average is 120 >_>). Why? Well, for one, I changed my relearning steps so that there are now 3 phases before a card returns to my review pile. This was helpful for my memory, and also for new cards, but boy did it take a while.

Also, today’s Kanzen vocabulary section (5A) was allll about onomatopoeia. Which, I find Japanese onomatopoeia so fun, but a big batch all at once meant it was verrry easy to get confused between terms. To combat the confusion, I used chat gpt and my own brain to come up with mnemonics for every single one of them. Some were better than others, though all were fairly effective. My favorites are:

  • “ookie ookie I’ve gotta cookie!!!” for ウキウキ (sound for joyous, cheerful spirits)
  • a line graph wobbling up and down → graph graph → グラグラ (sound of being wobbly, unsteady)

Anyway all of that was brutal and I’m ready to move on. But I’m in the fantastic state of only having three things left on my to do list for today. If I can catch up, my final study days might be a little less stressful. Here we goooo

Hellooo. So, I wasn’t here yesterday for good reason: I WAS STUDYING :D! I got caught up, too! There is WONDERFUL NEWS:

I dived into the reading practice exam yesterday with low hopes, but finished in 30 minutes… and got 100 PERCENT!

The experience of reading itself was certainly not as high-def as desired, but it was enough! Horray! That’s actually a significant relief.

I’m free-forming it a bit more on this weekend day.

  1. I start with getting through my WK reviews… → Reviews complete. For now lol. Next up is some vocab and anki but I’m going to need to pack up and go somewhere because I cannot concentrate.
  2. Okie I’m at a coffee shop. action plan is to go for 7A for now. → 7A done, luckily there weren’t so many new terms for this section.
  3. Unfortunately I now have 160 Anki cards to go through. Ughhhhh. Such is the way as I’ve been adding lots every day. I’m going to take such a break from adding in December. Let’s see how far we get. → Okayyy got through my Anki deck. Section 8 is the last section in Kanzen, so after tomorrow I will have a bit of a break to let my review count settle down again. Thank goodness.

I now must take a break to prepare some dinner… I might not finish 6B today, but that’s all right, I have tomorrow.

***Edit: My wonderful partner is cooking so I can study! Just did my 15 new WK items for the day, on to 6B.

YAY. Done with everything I need to do today. Things should flutter down this week, and then… the test.

Tomorrow I’m going to buy some #2 pencils and take a practice test. I really don’t feel like taking a practice test, but I should do it at least once I think before the exam. Here’s how things look:

Hello, been a few days since my last visit, but I have generally kept up with my plan. I took a practice test and did quite well! Besides grammar. I finished in good time, enough to take a little break and then go over some answers. I got 30/34 in vocab + kanji, all but one of the reading comprehension questions, and fine as usual with listening. Grammar, however… oof. I got maybe half.

So, at the advice of my friend, I’m going to focus on grammar questions a bit today because maybe I can get a little more used to the question format before the big day. I have all of today and tomorrow (horray I’m off work), and after a long trip to the test location on Saturday, I will have that evening. I’m almost to my 2024 goal of taking the N3! Wao!

All that said, I will now make a little game plan for the next three days. I will measure how much time I think it will take to complete in durtle tomatoes :durtle_tomato: . 1 durtle tomato = 25 minutes or 1 cycle of a pomodoro timer.

土曜日UPDATE
I have successfully traveled to my test location and pencils are all sharpened. Grammar is really going to depend… I just completed a practice test where I got everything right, but the two tests before that were 50/50. If I’m lucky it won’t be too bad. Tomorrow morning I’m going to revisit some grammar questions to warm my brain up a bit, then it’s go time!

My testing strategy is going to be to knock out the easy questions first–if I start struggling, I’m going to mark the question and return to it at the end. Grammar is my weakest section, so after getting through it briefly and then through all the reading section, I will use any remaining time to look over those questions with a more chill vibe. Again, hoping the grammar section is as easy as this last practice test I took.

That’s all for now! Really hoping I sleep sound tonight but kinda worried my brain is going to betray me with pre-test stress dreams. Alas! I feel pretty confident, but my brain likes to psyche itself out. Calmmm thoughts. Calm thoughts and animal crossing for tonight.

JLPT N3 Reflection

Hello! I’m here after taking the N3. It is time for me to get some much-needed rest and relaxation after an intense several months of studying. For the month of December, I want to vacation from intense studies, make time for all the other things I like to do, and organize a game plan for 2025. I might even revisit my animal crossing island, haha. I will continue, as ever, with my Anki reviews and Wanikani, but allow myself some chill time.

But in order to release my brain officially, I think I need to write this reflection, and get all my lil thoughts out for future me. Here we go!

The N3

I feel all right about it. I feel like I passed. I definitely made some mistakes, but there were only one or two questions where I had no idea what to answer.

  • Weirdly, vocabulary felt like my worst section. Many of the practice questions I completed beforehand were based on lists I had specifically studied, so it makes sense I would score high on those. There were several questions where it came down to choosing between two of the answers, unfortunately I am pretty sure I often chose wrong. If I had to guess, I think I might have pulled through on about 70% of this section. Hhhh! A pro from this section: I definitely knew the words chosen for the last four questions, where you choose the correct usage in a sentence. I feel very confident about having got those correct.

  • Grammar was suspiciously easy compared to the practice tests I had taken. However, there is a likely chance I made several mistakes. I’m going to guess maybe 70% again for this section. Honestly, who knows about the star questions. I understood what the sentences were trying to say, but very possibly my order was off. That seems to be a weakness of mine–I can get the big picture and generally comprehend what’s going on, but when it comes to specific definitions or having a feel for the ordering of sentences, its 50/50.

  • Reading was the easiest section for me. I’m going to guess (based on practice tests and feelings) that I got 90%. Maybe that’s optimistic! We’ll see in several months, haha. Again, I seem to be okay at finding the big picture and comprehending the meaning of sentences. Even if there are words I’ve never seen or kanji combinations I don’t easily remember how to pronounce, I could probably tell you the point and meaning of most all of those sentences. Which is very Cool and Exciting! It is also exciting how fast I was able to read. I was definitely pushing myself with the pace, but it was cool to notice how I was able to pick up meaning even when going that fast. I’d like to be able to read swiftly without it feeling like a push in the future.

  • Listening felt like most of the practice tests. There were only one or two questions where I felt like I had missed something and needed to guess. There are probably more questions where I was confidently mistaken. But if the practice tests were any indication, I probably got around 70% at least.

So. Overall. N3 was not a breeze, but I might have passed. We’ll see for sure in a couple months, haha. Regardless, I have an idea of where I am in my Japanese journey, and what I need to work on.

The Future

I will probably take most of December to come up with a solid plan for the next year. Ideally, I would like to take the N2 next December. Yes, that’s an ambitious leap. There is a lot to do to get there.

  • Kanji. If I keep on track with Wanikani, I should have most of N2 kanji covered by next December. Around August I’ll revisit to make sure I’m going at the right pace, but for the most part, I think the habits I have in place are going to take me there.

  • Vocabulary. This is going to be so, so important, and perhaps the base for everything. I struggled with the N3 vocabulary section, and even in reading I could only guess the meaning and reading of many words. I’m a bit overwhelmed because vocabulary can come from so many places. I regularly pick up new words at work, whenever I read or listen to something there will be words to mine, and there are dedicated word compilations for JLPT levels. I won’t be able to add every single new word to my Anki deck or my brain will burn out in a flash. Finding a balance will require some thought and practice.
I will say, I did go ahead and invest in the N3単語2000 and N2単語2500 books this morning. Why?

    1. I like studying from books.
    2. I like making my own Anki cards.
    3. I used the N4 version of this series a bit while living in Japan, and liked the layout.
    4. Going through these will help me feel more confident about the N3 vocabulary I missed this year, plus the vocabulary base I need for N2.
    5. These will help me study common words, which will boost my comprehension.
  • Reading Comprehension. Its… TIME TO READ. Immersion time bby! If I’m not regularly reading, there’s no way I’m going to get good at it. I have a late elementary-level novel already picked out to start. I’m going to make a game plan and read the damn book. After that, I will move forward with another book. For daily practice, I want to use Todaii Japanese, NHK easy, Matcha, etc. to read about an article a day. I wonder about playing a video game in Japanese every now and then for a little spice.

  • Listening Comprehension. 2025 is the year of immersion. I am lucky that I work a job that depends on my ability to comprehend spoken Japanese. However, I want to get outside practice. There are sooo many options, so I need to make a schedule and not get overwhelmed. I’d like listen to a podcast a day. I’d like to find a show to watch immersion-style. I’d like to watch some NHK news. I will, as ever, continue working with my tutor.

  • Grammar. Alas, it must be studied. I’m thinking of having a chilled-out pace for learning N2 grammar at the start of the year, so I can focus heavily on immersion. Then, at the latter half of the year, I’ll ramp up the grammar-specific studies. Hopefully lots of immersion will familiarize me with the patterns to make it easier. The Kanzen series was great for testing my knowledge, but I don’t know that I want to rely on it completely for learning the grammar concepts again. I’ve only dabbled with bunpro before, and not sure I want to add another SRS to the routine, but I’m considering utilizing it in some way to introduce new grammar and review the N4/N3 grammar that is a little tricky.

For all of this, a schedule is going to be vitally important, because there is simply so much to do and so little time. I want to make sure that I am meeting goals, making progress, etc., but at a sustainable pace. Keeping up the pace will be everything.

I’m really happy to have met my goal of taking the N3 this year. I worked hard and made immense progress. New ground is exciting! The next several years are going to take dedication, patience, and seriously pushing myself. I’m buckling in for a long road of learning kanji, vocab, how to speak, and how to read. But overall, this is so cool! A year ago there was no way I could have sat this test and understood what was going on. Three years ago it was exhausting for me to read more than 4 sentences in Japanese. Five years ago I couldn’t hold a conversation. Nine years ago I was fully monolingual.

いつでも、これからがんばります!
