- Pass the JLPT N3 in December
- Focus on building vocabulary (Anki) and kanji (Wanikani)
- Develop a reading practice
- Develop a listening practice
I’m currently pushing through the intermediate plateau. My speaking and listening is becoming fairly competent, but I still need lots of input. My literacy has a long way to go to catch up with my speaking fluency, and unfortunately I very much dislike memorizing thousands of words and struggle to get through Japanese texts.
It’s time to deal with that so I can get to the next level! So for the time being, I am focusing heavily on building my vocabulary through Anki and my kanji ability through Wanikani. I want to push through to level 60 so I can be comfortable with reading. If I can get to a point where I don’t have to look up as many words or kanji, I think I will have a much more pleasant time engaging with native media, which will hopefully make my practice fun, natural, and breezier as I get more advanced.
So! The plan for now is to do hard work so I won’t have to later. I’m going to:
- Progress through my vocabulary list from work, (lots of technical and industry-specific vocab!)
- Add N3 vocabulary and vocab mined from life to my Anki deck, continue progressing through that
- Keep up a steady pace of new items in Wanikani, aim for Level 60!
- Progress through the Kanzen Master N3 Grammar, Vocab, and Reading books. I’m hoping that once I force myself through the Reading one, that skill will become a bit more quick and natural, and I will be able to launch into native material with confidence.
By the end of 2024, I want to pass the N3 and be ready to implement a study regime which includes regular exposure to native material and will guide me toward N2.
