A bit too much chat and not enough fighting for me this chapter. But I was struck again at the brilliance of the world building in this manga, and the complexity of the story line and the magical ideas. No wonder the creators need some time off at the moment! The fact that Frieren had met Mahato in the past, and spent 100 YEARS turning her arm back from gold was a bit of a surprise!
Yeah let’s just keep going for now by the schedule at the top of the post, without the participation poll. I need to catch up on last week and this week’s chapters.
Haha! Not quite top gear style! Very happy to take a pause if that’s what others want to do. I don’t think Mitrac is reading along with the current volume at present, so I just meant if they are not around to do the participation polls we can just continue on the schedule already set out.
Are we nearly there? This arc feels like it’s been going on forever! After lots of flying and talking we suddenly got a lot of fatal looking strikes in the space of a few pages.
I loved Denken’s final strike! Epic fail by Mahato, with victory in his grasp should have finished him off. Only thing is large hole in centre of chest doesn’t necessarily seem to finish off these demons. Does Frieren still have some work to do…?
Meanwhile, good work Fern. I didn’t see that coming (and neither did Solitaire ). Good on Frieren for just finishing her off rather than taking any final risks!
I really don’t like how this arc ended hahaha, I thought after so much time developing the 魔族 we would get some sort of redemption, at least from マハト, who got the most development. But no, it ended up being: “we demons sure are evil, welp time to die”, even though they didn’t kill Fern, Stark, Denken or maybe even Frieren when they could have (were they really that evil?). The chekhov’s gun that was the bracelet also felt kinda pointless since I feel it was there just to confirm “yeah, he doesn’t feel evil at all”, and the fact that Frieren was the one to release them from the gold spell was also honestly underwhelming for the same reasons.
I am really hoping we get back to sticking to more episodic plots, cause this was a big fumble for me hahaha
Whaaat? Are you saying you didn’t enjoy having the return of a random space-filler character from the random tournament arc purely so we could spend the better part of three volumes finishing off his character arc while the actual main characters just stand around and twiddle their thumbs? Inconceivable!
Miss what made this story telling feel special IMO … in the beginning the vastly different perspectives with the passages of time and how that influenced the lives of people, decisions, what things are the most important, etc…of course that cannot go on forever and already was told by someone that the story does sort of turn into this sort of thing we are seeing now so not surprised but also a little disappointed.
Haven’t read 103 yet but soon. Makes me want to push through and finish this series, but realized there are still 4 vols (had in my head there were only 2) and still need to buy 15. I have bingo cards that are suffering that need more attention anyway.
But who knows, maybe the next arc will be much improved. Didn’t like the testing arc. Though felt like it’s something we will come back to and we kind of did a little in this arc, however, not sure I’m looking forward to the animated version of this arc either.
I’m getting the impression this is another author that cannot find a solid way to wrap up complicated stories. It’s like they get an idea, start writing but don’t think everything through and forget about wrapping things up and in an instant everything is all better Although, maybe the next bit will improve … lots of vols still to go …
Yeah, the last two arcs have been a bit of a fumble in general. I feel like the author just keeps presenting characters that they aren’t happy about and we keep cycling through new ones to find one that fits better (I am still surprised by Sein just dissappearing from the plot like that)
I caught up this week and went a couple of chapters ahead.
My thoughts I noted at the end of Chapter 103
Ok, I was completely wrong last week. Even Mahato can’t survive having the centre of his chest blown away. Although Denken is surprisingly alive and mobile and looks set to live another day!
I liked the shared cigarette with Gryuku ending, had a nice symmetry to what we’d seen before. Although a shame Mahato couldn’t go down with a bit more style.
Other thoughts at this point
The arc that concluded with Frieren defeating Aura was amazing. We invested a lot of build up for a stunning finale. The end of this arc was nowhere near as good. I don’t feel we got our reward.
Let’s hope we can get back to what this manga does best.
I have to trust that like many great fantasy stories there is a grand plan! I’d love to see Sain reunite with the party. I’d love to see Kraft come back, surely he’s got more to give to the story.
haven’t read 104 + but this chap felt a little hmmmm
not satisfied - feels like a huge waste of time
though the last bit bringing the smoking behind the conbini (nice touch but predictable)
though was it worth it?
one dead demon but one bad guy is now alive again…
maybe old but still … hmmm

wonder if any of these demons will show up at the very end (if/when) we ever get to the end of this journey …
not expecting ch104 to leave me satisfied either - but will see
seeing about trying to gleam some new deep thoughts from this arc
(some interesting parallels could be drawn…but so far nothing really new from my own perspective)
