We read volume one as part of the Beginner Book Club. This is a spin off club to continue reading the series together.

All the discussion will take place on this thread and I’ll post a participation poll each week as we start the next section.

    • More details if you don’t know about it: Manga Kotoba is an incredible resource created by local legend ChristopherFritz. The site has frequency-based vocabulary lists for all volumes of Frieren and thousands of other manga. Accounts are free and making one enables tracking words and many other features. You can ask questions about it here.
  • Frieren vocab roots: there are many names that derive from German words. Here is a page that looks into those roots

怖いよー！

Definitely an exposition chapter, I needed to support myself with a translator a bit to understand the rules of the trial, but as soon as character interactions went back, felt a little bit more secure ^^

I actually didn’t even understand the title of this chapter, 零落の王墓, and even after looking it up I’m still like “eeee” xdd

I see that somebody else added it to the vocabulary chart, I did write down a few words, so maybe I could contribute a bit to the chart as well. If you see somebody edit the Excel, that’s me :eyes:

yeah… as with every anime series and story ever…
they always fail the test…everyone dies and the story ends …

honestly I’m really surprised at the number of people that haven’t watched this anime before and don’t know the story. I’ve seen it at least 5 times all the way through and I don’t rewatch a lot…but it’s just so dang awesome!!!

I enjoyed that chapter, I liked seeing Fern smiling while talking about seeing Frieren happy that was sweet

Also the clone thing is cool, looking forward to this week’s chapter, that was a very ominous entrance from frieren clone

What?! Outrage that we have to wait another week to see this battle. :face_with_raised_eyebrow: I was excited too. And maybe we have to wait even longer if we’re going to wait for everyone to arrive. I like Frieren’s bring it on face at the end while everyone else is terrified.

Intriguing idea to get everyone ganging up to destroy a Frieren clone. Wouldn’t it feel weird if everyone had to gang up to defeat your clone and essentially they are seeking weaknesses that could be used against you later? Even if they’re all on the same side… somehow it’s an uneasy situation so it makes it even funnier how excited she is. My speculation: So perhaps a weakness of hers will be revealed for the first time but I doubt it. Perhaps the Dungeon lord Spiegel (mirror) has one… or an entirely different situation arises

Oh wow, for me, I’m waiting until we’ve read the whole thing, then I’ll watch - icing on the cake!

I puzzled over this comment when you posted it, but now I”ve read the chapter I get it!

Ha, yes that’s me! I have started watching the anime since it appeared on Netflix and enjoying it - esp as someone who doesn’t watch much anime. But I’m not letting myself get ahead of the manga in the anime!

I watched the series a couple of times before the bk…
and still picked up the manga :wink:
if you love the story it will make the reading even easier…

Ch. 51

Quite a difficult chapter. First time I plowed through on my will alone :melting_face: Second time I finally understood what’s going on.
So there’s a ゼンゼ’s imitation after all.
Then I have another wonder - エーデル has left but what about her imitation? Has it left too, or should Frieren’s group 倒す not only her’s and ゼンゼ’s imitations but エーデル’s too?

Chapter 51

Don’t forget the stated aim of the second task is not to defeat all the monsters or imitations or whatever, but rather reach the bottom of the dungeon. Frieren’s duplicate is a problem not because they’re required to defeat it, per se, but rather that it’s blocking their path to the final chamber.

Ah, I already forgot about it :sweat_smile:
But shouldn’t the imitations be drawn to the originals? Seems totally unfair that エーデル met ゼンゼ’s copy.
