紡ぐ乙女と大正の月 1 👘 Book Club (Intermediate Manga Club)

yeah, i’m a bit wary about good times 4komas in the riseup to uh imperial japan, but you know what can you do, that’s history for you

This one has some meat to it in terms of story and drama. It’s not just comedy and good times. While it doesn’t confront imperialism it also doesn’t make light of it for gags either. It’s just not a major topic in the series that I recall.

hey guys. not sure I’ll understand everything, but will give reading this a try. Thanks for hosting!

taisho period is still when the civilian government had some real control via some very funny constitutional loop-holing, well before full military take-over, and also before a lot of (but definitely not all of) the Manchuria conflicts. Japan comes out of wwi doing pretty well economically, so I think you can sorta compare it to the roaring 20s in the united states; there’s lots of very optimistic liberal ideology that ends up not standing the test of economic pressures in the late 20s and 30s that lead into the rise of imperial imperial japan and wwii.

Really curious to see how, if at all, it deals with these social and political themes. Having a modern character who knows what’s gonna happen, surely there’s some tension knowing how badly things are going to break in just a few years

I don’t think this is a pick that I ended up voting for, but the more I learn about it the more interested I get

I also didn’t vote for it but happy that something I didn’t vote for got picked, I intent to try all the picks as I think it’s nice to try something you wouldn’t have thought to read by yourself! Can get some nice surprises!

Just nabbed my ebook copy, I’ve never read 4-koma before so I’m interested as to what that’ll look like over the course of a story.

I don’t think I’ll be able to stay even slightly on schedule with the club because of home responsibilities, but I’ll be reading whenever I can!

I couldn’t wait and went ahead and read the character profiles. I’m so excited! I think I’m gonna love these characters. And also learn lots of new vocabulary.

I read ahead as I had some time this week, and populated the vocab sheet for week 1. I don’t think I’ll have time to do that in future weeks but wanted to let people know it was there in case they didn’t think to look.

Week 1 is here boyos:

By the way my emoji-fu is week. I’m open to propositions for this book club’s title.

I’d say a kimono is good.

:kimono:

Kimono reminds me of 舞妓さんちのまかないさん. I like @Jintor 's emoji used in the Read every day challenge thread, a purse :purse: (but I haven’t read the manga before, other than having seen a lot of female characters so far, I have no idea if it’s fitting)

So your argument for the purse is “women be shopping”? Interesting.

As I said, not my original idea :stuck_out_tongue: but I can probably defend it anyway, I have two daughters and tried very hard since they were born to fight stereotypes and gender based toys and color, that did not work, pink is their favorite color and they like all the pretty things, so yep, I don’t mind that a pink purse represents a manga with a lot of female characters, if that’s what they like  (who said anything about shopping?)

I wasn’t being serious. I’m still going for the kimono tho. Women be wearing cute kimono doing cute things.

Women be shopping with old timey purses

Week the second is here:

Semaine numéro trois:

Week 4, we read two chapters at a time from this week onwards:

Week number 5: we start the 2nd half of the book!
