第 or 目 when to use

they both describe ordinance
第 is a prefix, used before a number
目 is a suffix used after a counter
when should you use one over the other and is there any nuance behind these two terms im not getting

第三回 is like “number three time”… though that’s a little awkward in English
三回目 is like “the third time”

第三回 feels more formal. If this were the third time an exam, festival, other event, etc… were held, it feels more appropriate to call it 第三回. You might say 三回目 to describe it in coversation though.

I think you’re right. I see 第 being used in those card titles for anime episodes and whatnot, but in the actual episode I hear them say 目

I agree. 第3回 is normally used as a title of an event (convention, conference, competition etc).
