硝子の塔の殺人 🗼 Advanced Book Club

Alright, since (almost) no one jumped of enthusiasm at the suggestion of cutting the first chapter in two, I present you the final[1] schedule:

Date week Chapter and sections char pages from, to
Aug 30 week 1 プロローグ, 一日目: 1 30758 54 p.1 to p.60

Nov 1 week 10 最終日: 4, 5, エピローグ 37841 73 p.426 to p.498

I decided not to add an 11th week, as in any case there will be a week break before the next pick of the ABC starts and you can also finish the book at your own pace! The threads will still be here for you when you get there

Feel free to mark your consent / approval of the schedule with a heart, or your disagreement with a comment  (in case you agree, comments are allowed too of course :joy: )

  1. only final if noone comes after me with a pitchfork of course ↩︎

Just a heads-up, though it will be too late for the beginning of the club, but the paperback edition will be released on October, 3rd !

Ohh… I wonder if the price of the digital edition will change then…

That is usually what happens! Though I don’t know if it’s reflected in the digital price right away.

When 香君 got released as a paperback, as far as I remember, they immediately replaced the 2 part edition with a 4 part edition, but the price for the whole novel didn’t even become noticably cheaper.

That’s a bit of an outlier since they doubled the number of books, so the cheaper price of a bunkobon ends up doubled too. Usually it stays one book and gets cheaper. But that’s a good indicator that the change will be reflected quickly.

I remember seeing this on audiobook.jp, might join in as a listener

Nice! Supposedly the version on audiobook.jp is with a full cast audio, should be nice!

Alright time to get started! Looking forward to reading this book with everybody!
Let me know how the pace feels.
I also didn’t create a vocabulary sheet or a table for proper names, let me know as we go if you think that would be a nice addition.

For the names we can just use page 6 before the prologue, that has the 10 characters with furigana. I don’t think there will be a lot more names, except maybe for whatever happened in the past.
Definitely worth screenshotting, because I will not remember who is who or how they’re pronounced.

Yes I already started reading today and the number of times I flipped to this page was enormous .

For all the names up until now the author thankfully included furigana for their first occurence. At least that is the case in my 単行本 version. Was quite useful for all the authors to be honest.

So I also don’t think we need a name sheet.

I bookmarked that page too, it’s definitely really useful and I’m thankful that the author added it

I’m in the camp of having a table of names in the thread here as well would be very useful, rather than flicking back and forth each time (especially digitally), having it on a separate tab here I like more. I’ll probably make my own notes file with them all in anyway as we go

Well that makes things easy enough
I’ll make it as a table then

I’ve added the table of character names. I have a few questions / comments.

p.6, character names

I could type 壱、弐、参 just fine but my IME refused to find the rest, used wikipedia to copy / paster the other numbers.

Now what’s the different between 刑事 and 名探偵 ? Is the first one a detective, usually working with the police, while the second one is a private detective?

夢読水晶 is a funny name but when your job is 霊能力者, I guess that’s very fitting.

九流間行進 is I think 九流間・行進? Funny to me that the last name’s reading is くるま。

It does get a bit “explained” in chapter 1 :slightly_smiling_face: (sorry for the deleted post, formatting on the phone is weird)

If you click the A button and edit the post to take away the “open” in the summary tag, the dropdown will stay closed by default.

I think all names were created so that they either have a homonym (九流間=車 and 加々見=鏡), or the meaning is connected to the job of the person (夢読 for the psychic and 酒泉 for the cook). Not all of the references are clear to me, but it still makes remembering them so much easier.

Thanks for the lost of names! That’s one thing that can be easy to miss while listening.

Happy to report back that the break between numbered parts is very obvious! They play a bit of music and then clearly state the number on its own.

I did stop at the break point today. Will sleep on the decision for today and decide tomorrow whether or not to start another audiobook on the side. ^^

Ah I see, thanks @snowwater, I just have to start reading then

Ah that makes sense! Explains the weird spellings too, something I couldn’t get my IME to produce. Will have to think about the names then.

Yeah I was thinking about you and people listening to the audio version! Also just added the two illustrations that are before the prologue.
