Please have a look at the schedule proposal in the OP. The page numbers are taken from the paperback. Each starting page is filled to 2/3, and the last pages are often quite empty (some only have one or two columns in them, others are half-filled). So even if it says 17 or 18 pages, in reality it’s not that they are all filled.

What do you think about that proposal?

  • Looks good to me!
  • We could go a bit faster, I think
  • I would prefer to go a bit slower please…

If you’d like to go faster or slower, please let me know more details (e.g. how much slower and so on). Here is the page count for each chapter, so you can try your hand at a different schedule as well, if you like!

I’m fine with going faster but feel that if more people want that schedule (or slower) I can adjust.

Re: “going faster”: it’s a bit difficult  and I have some contradicting thoughts. I’ll just throw them at you and then we can see what sticks

  • The Intermediate club aims for a reading speed of ~15 pages. Considering that, the proposed schedule looks quite fitting to me
  • Knowing that each chapter actually has ~1 page less than what the numbers say (from the free space on the first and last pages) the proposed schedule is actually on the low end
  • I am not willing to split in the middle of chapters, unless a lot of people ask for it
  • Looking at the chapter pages, we have the three chunks of 17 - 17 - 18 pages which should go into a week on their own if we try to adhere to the ~15 page range (unless we want to split them; see previous point), and then the other weeks don’t have much wriggle room
  • We could regroup the three last weeks into two weeks of 24 and 21 pages, respectively (i.e. going from a 10-week schedule to a 9-week schedule)
  • Of course, if everybody wants to, we could go even faster than that, but for that we should wait until we know what the club participants are fine with (because I want to be welcoming for members who are less experienced readers)

Happy to hear your thoughts on these points, and other things to consider!

Considering that so far everyone who voted for a faster schedule also voted that the one you proposed is fine, I don’t think it’s really anything to worry about. As long as there’s at least one person who didn’t vote for faster, I think we should go with the regular intermediate club pace. ^^

Sounds like there are several good reasons to stick with the suggested pace. This is not a long book. I’m sure most people won’t mind having a bit of extra time to keep up with their other book clubs if they have finished the weekly reading.

(If anyone is keen for something else on the side, we are going to start reading Yoko Ogawa’s 密やかな結晶 at one chapter per week over on Natively - from the start of October. )

As usual, I converted the schedule into kindle locations (which are a measure for the number of characters), and this is what I get:

When I compare to the page numbers you indicated I wonder whether I missed the end of the last chapter and included some kind of epilogue? In #locations the last week is particularly dense (more than week 6 which has 8 more pages than week 10?!).

If week 10 is correct, the average number of locations is 189. In the current book we have 171, and I have the impression that many club members are lagging behind - so I wouldn’t vote for a faster pace.

Could some owner of the paper edition please tell me the last sentence of chapter 18? This is what I took for the end of chapter 18:

My book has one page of what looks like literature references or something, and then three pages of 解説. The regular text ends on page 183 and its end matches the picture you posted.

checks numbers again

Oh! That’s the defect! I went off of the total page number on Natively (which is 175) but my book’s regular text ends on 183 while the 解説 ends on page 187.

I’m sorry for the confusion! This means the last chapter contains 18 pages and the last week contains 25 pages. Hmmm… I think I’ll leave the schedule as-is nonetheless because the chapter before the last is 7 pages, so it doesn’t really matter much which one is the large one, I guess…

We had a bit of a discussion around the schedule (thank you so much to everybody who voiced their opinion!) but I never officially confirmed that I will be sticking with the schedule in the OP for this club, so here it is. :woman_bowing:

In case you want more book clubs in parallel, I can recommend the Ogawa club at Natively (starting this weekend) and the WK Advanced Book Club (currently voting, starting November 15). (Links can be found in the Intermediate Club home thread.)

I’m starting late, but I’ll join! Been a while since I’ve read (besides uni work) in Japanese, so I’ve been meaning to get back into it

And we’re off to week 4!

I’ve retrofitted all the names into the existing threads (thanks again to @2000kanji for collecting them!). The names of the current week are visible but the description of the person is behind a spoiler tag, while the names of the previous weeks are under a drop-down but without spoiler tags. In the home thread’s OP all names are under the drop-down and without spoiler tags, so please be careful if you don’t want to get spoilered in any case!
